What are some of the characteristic strategies and play styles of AOE2 player TheMax?

In Hidden Cup 2 (March – April, 2019), TheMax's performance suggested that he is the equal of any player in the game. He easily beat MrYo (3 to 1 in Best of 5) and Liereyy (3 to 1 in Best of 5), before narrowly losing to TheViper in a drawn-out seven-game series. But, TheMax's play style is not easy to characterize. In the opening game of the Hidden Cup 2 Final Series, commentator T90Official, when trying to guess the TheMax's hidden identity, noted that, "we still don't have any great guesses as to who this player is" and T90Official and Dave seriously thought the player was possibly Vivi. This uncertainty was striking, both because by the time of the Final Series there had been ample opportunity to observe the players, and because T90Official had easily guessed the identities of MBL and TheViper in the semifinal series between those two. In a post discussing the world's top players, HiEveryoneHowsItGoin described TheMax as "[a] somewhat one-dimensional player" but noted that "he does that one dimension better than anybody." HiEveryoneHowsItGoin said, "Personally I'm not a fan of his play style, but I have to admit it's damn effective." T90Official, commenting on the thread, had a different assessment, writing that TheMax is "definitely not a one dimensional [player]" and asking "What is repetitive in his 1v1 play . . . ?" Several other commentators also described TheMax as having a fairly versatile play style.
