Should I wait for DE?

I'm looking for a new RTS as SC2 is now starting to get a little stale for me, I used to play AoE2 a bit back in the day but not a huge amount. I'll be sure to check out the youtube and streamers listed in the side bar but my main question is should I wait for DE to come out? Will all versions of the game be able to play together? I don't want to get HD and then have to get DE in a month.
