I watched MbL playing on voobly 3 days ago because his steam was down for a while. He had the same opinion on ranged units as I did, that arrows without ballistics don't hit moving targets whatsoever in DE. In the classic version, even if you don't have ballistics, there's a big chance the arrows (of towncenters, crossbowmen etc) would still hit the enemy targets as long as you're not standing too far away. In DE you really need ballistics to actually hit things. In combination with the improved path finding (which imo is even better than the classic one now), ranged unit are way worse in dealing with enemy cavalry. Also the gunpowder bullets seem to fly so slowly and miss everything, not to mention the huge frame delay of cavalry archers. It makes me think that melee units are too dominant now, or is it just me?
