40 years ago today was a historic moment for computer strategy gaming

Gather round and let me share with you the story of Eurisko.

July 4th 1981. The US championship for the Traveller RPG was underway. For the previous 2 weeks a room full of the most advanced computers of the day had crunched over the Traveller ruleset. And the computers found a strategy that was just plain weird. But it worked and it completely annihilated. If you are curious for details about strategy check out this.

Eurisko was something new. It wasn't just a computer playing a game. Or a computer beating a human at a game. Even in 1981 those were old hat. For example computers could play checkers in 1959 and beat a master in 1962.

This didn't play the game. It solved the meta. Not only that but it understood how its own strategy worked and included 2 additional layers of meta-game in case someone tried something similar.

Imagine what the technology could do now. Computers are millions of times faster. Imagine this technology applied to the AoE2 tech tree and finding optimal build orders....

Of course it needs a lot more than just the tech tree. Merely trying to predict resource gathering rates requires a fairly accurate simulation of villager pathfinding and collisions. (But that part wasn't as difficult as expected.) I'll be posting occasionally whenever I come across something real good ^_^
