Are there strategies for Chinese or Mayans where you don't research Loom at the start of the game?

These two civs have unusual starts because they can't immediately make Villagers, due to not having food or being housed, respectively. Traditionally this gives you a window to research Loom, but I'm wondering if there are niche strategies when you don't want to do so to save the gold. Offhand I can think of a drush or FC with Mayans because your TC is idle for less time, but I really can't think when you'd want to do so with Chinese. If you have a crazy no-Loom build for either, I'd like to hear it.
