What's going on with the tree-search algorithm?

I've just seen Kuso's livestream of a villager cutting a whole map full of trees and the way the villager chooses trees is odd. The lumbercamp is on the bottom of the map and you can see in the photo that the villager is ignoring trees which are much closer to the camp. A couple of days ago the villager cut a curving path through the trees and took trees from the end of it, so he was walking an inneficient curved path to the tree he was cutting.

How is tree selection actually programmed? I thought they would just go for the closet on but clearly not. It seems there is some random noise added onto whatever rules they have for searching. Here is the stream as well
