Voobly and Steam

Hi lovely people of r/aoe2,

I was wondering about something. I was hearing a lot about Voobly and it being better then playing through Steam. I wanted to know if that's true (and maybe why). I'd also like to know that if/when I make the switch whether or not I'd still be able to play on Steam too, because my family+bf use that and won't switch.
