Cavalry Archer Civ Rankings

After a recent post made a comparison between the Magyars and Mongols as both being light cavalry + cavalry archer civs, I wanted to test and see which civilizations have the best FU cavalry archers. The civilizations I picked for this test were:

  1. Huns (Cheaper Cav Archers)
  2. Mongols (Faster shooting Cav Archers)
  3. Magyars (Cav Archer UT +1 attack/+1 range)
  4. Turks (Cav Archer UT +20 HP)
  5. Saracens (Cav Archer +4 bonus vs. buildings)

I wanted to get a sense of which ones were the strongest both in 1v1 situations and in equal cost scenarios. I only looked at fights between FU Cav Archers, so there may be situations where these rankings are inaccurate (Saracen bonus vs. buildings). I also included the Mangudai as a separate ranking, since Mongol players normally build those instead of Heavy Cavalry Archers. Here are the results from my tests in the scenario editor:

1v1 Rankings

  1. Turks
  2. Magyars
  3. Mangudai
  4. Saracens
  5. Mongols
  6. Huns

Equal cost rankings (8 Cavalry Archers, 10 for Huns, 7 Mangudai)

  1. Magyars/Turks (Running multiple times, they had a pretty even win distribution)
  2. Huns
  3. Mangudai
  4. Saracens
  5. Mongols

My thoughts on the results of this test are that the Mongols are a much weaker Cav Archer civilization than I expected, and the Turks are much stronger. I'm not sure why the Magyar/Turk group battle was inconsistent, but it could have something to do with how the units selected targets on their own. As for why the Mongols did so poorly, I think the reason is that they miss the last archer armor tech. The Huns also miss out on this armor tech, which explains their poor showing in the 1v1.

I was hoping that Spirit of the Law could do a video on this topic, and maybe do some math on the Mongol fire rate bonus vs targets of different armor, and in which cases the Magyar UT is more beneficial than the Mongol fire rate.

Thoughts on these rankings?
