Please help, cannot load single player game

When I try to create a standard single player game and click "start game", the options change shades, but will not load the game.

I'm using the Steam HD version if that helps. I've tried verifying files, uninstalling/reinstalling, even changing the "Launcher" file. Nothing I've done has worked.

It's been over a year since I last played and I cannot remember if I played on my new machine or older one, but I'm fairly confident I played a bit on my new machine. Basically that means, if I've played it on the same machine before, that nothing should have changed except maybe updates and patches. So maybe that's the cause? Maybe a bug in a patch? Or something else? I have no clue.
