Kings have an attack, defence, no and a variable speed bonus.
The more units you create, the weaker your king gets.
Which means that you would start the game with a strong king that is practically impossible to kill. Harass enemy players if you so wish, steal sheep, whatever.
When your economy and military start growing, your incentive to keep your king safe grows bigger as his hp decreases, weaker attack and slower speed (linked to pop)
At the end game, the losing enemy player has a final hail mary with a very powerful king fighting the onslaught or escaping to greener pastures.
