Why isn't Fast Speed the commonly accepted speed?

Had a few people ask me to switch speed to normal, is there a reason for it? Civ management games are already very time consuming.

I would understand that if fast speed ruined the flow of the game or made it look like I am fast-fowarding a movie or something, but it isnt the case here. The game feels just as smooth on fast.

Just curious here, no offense to anybody
