Just saw this on the AOE3 fandom page: https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Age_of_Empires_III#Trivia The reference is of course that Bruce Shelly article that people have probably seen several times (most of times being slapped on the face with it by someone else). But that article only says the reason is they feel the game is too different.
