What are the Physics behind dropping a ball of plasticine?

(same question posted to r/askscience) What I mean by the question above is, say, you have a plasticine/clay ball, and you drop from height X. When it hits the ground, an area that came into contact with the ground is flattened. What physics can be used to describe that?
