Bug: game changes don't apply

Hi!

I play AOE3 by Steam on a Windows 7 pc. I can change the settings during and before the game, but the changes don't apply. For instance, when I change the option to zoom to "very far" and click OK, I still can't zoom further away. The same goes for the other settings in menu.

Years ago I played AOE3 by discs also on a windows 7 but on a different pc, I had the exact same problem. Unfortunately I can't remember the fix :(

I've searched a lot of threads on Google. Most of the threads are about resolution problems and suggest the following:

- Running the age3.exe as administrator

- Running the age3.exe in windows XP (service pack 2 and 3) compatibility mode

- Disable desktop composition in properties of age3.exe

- Disable display scaling on high DPI settings in properties of age3.exe

- Changing the XML file by hand (but the changes were already made in that file)

Unfortunately none of these solve the problem. Has anyone else seen or had this problem? Please let me know,
