TL&DR: Is there a mod for bots with more finetuning options, or anyone has another idea? I'll explain in detail what our issues with current bots are.
My girlfriend and I play AOE2 together, while I've played it years ago for many years and still, she is very rather new to the game and has her own playstyle aka. upgrading to feudal age minutes before enemies hit imperial age.
We play on AOE2 HD and the bots we choose are the standard or medium difficulty, this is where our issue comes in: medium is to hard for her (new AI/AI no difference), she needs time to assemble all the buildings and as I said is very new to the game, so she doesn't know how to counter enemy units or play defensively, so she dies and I can't really help her as I also get rushed by 30+ archers and need to hold them off myself (we play mostly on giant with 6 players, us 2 and 2 2-bot-teams since this seems to delay enemy attacks for a while).
We changed to standard for a while but even for her that's to boring, enemies rarely attack, don't build up armies and seem to just afk some time into the game, she likes to win by wonders and all that happens is that the enemy sends an "army" at around 50 years TO ME instead of her, but even if it would destroy her army (spoiler: not in the slightest) it wouldn't be enough time to take down the wonder.
So it's either: Get rushed by a huge army and die or play against a dead squirrel
