How to Get Age of Empires II HD on Mac using Steam and Crossover (DLC AND MP WORKING)(WORKING JUNE 2018)(LEGAL)

I'll just preface this by saying that if this post gets deleted and you need it for future reference, it will be on r/wine_gaming. Also, this guide should work in helping you bypass the 'content servers unreachable' error that some mac users get while trying to install games on windows steam, as well as the issue you can get on windows steam where AOE2 HD doesn't run once installed. This has been tested on multiple computers.

  1. Purchase Age of Empires II HD on Steam.
  2. Install CrossOver: https://www.codeweavers.com/crossover-windows-on-mac?gclid=Cj0KCQjw1NzZBRCoARIsAIaMwutIBEZ8vB7msMxh5JWWkPveJkLihBl4j7eyl_LU_TGq_GaZjCrrEcEaAu_VEALw_wcB
  3. Open CrossOver > Install Windows Application > Search for Steam in the popup > Go through the installation process
  4. Once the installation has finished, open Steam and login to your Steam account. You may have to close it and reopen it the first time you open it after installation. After you have accessed your Steam account, quit Steam.
  5. Select Finder, then click on 'Go' in the top left while holding down 'option' and then select Library. Next, navigate to: Application Support > CrossOver > Bottles > Steam > drive_c > Program Files > Steam > config > config.vdf (open with a text editing application, such as TextEdit) and then:

Copy the following wall of text:

and paste it below this (should be at the top):

"InstallConfigStore"

{

"Software" { "Valve" { "Steam" {

This first process gets rid of the 'content servers unreachable' error, and allows you to install games. When finished, it should look something like this:

  1. Save and close config.vdf

  2. Open Steam in CrossOver once again, and install Age of Empires II HD (around 2.4 gb with DLC)

  3. When the installation is complete, right click on Age of Empires II HD and select properties. From there, click on the General tab if you are not already on it, and select Set Launch Options. In the popup, write: NoStartUp

  4. Close Steam.

  5. Navigate to: Library (control + go) > Application Support > CrossOver > Bottles > Steam > steamapps > Common > Age2HD

  6. In the Age2HD file, do the following

i. Delete 'Launcher.exe'

ii. Copy 'AoK HD.exe' and paste it in the same file.

iii. Rename the copy of 'AoK HD.exe' to 'Launcher.exe'

  1. Save and close the file, open Steam and play the game. You may have to restart the game the first time after all of these steps to get it working, as it can get stuck on the loading screen. After the first time though there should not be any issues.
