Ideas/Inspirations for projects to work on

I thought it would be a nice idea to gather some ideas what people could do to offer something new for aoe2. There have been a lot of people in the past working on great stuff. Countless mod creators, the Userpatch team, the Voobly team, the people behind all aoe2 tools and sites (aoe2calendar, captains mode, aoezone, aoe2stats, etc...). There's no way I can name all of them :D Anyways, this requires two parts: First, obviously the willingness to spend time working on a certain project. But it also needs an idea of what might be improved, what isn't there yet. I'm going to name what I was able to think of, would be interested to see what else you come up with. It's also possible some of it might already exist and people aren't aware of it. Without further ado, here's my list:

  • Additional Tutorial Scenarios in the style of ZeroEmpires FC build guide or the hotkey scenario on the steam workshop. It could even be worked into a William Wallace v2-ish campaign. There's a lot of info out there in the form of youtube videos and guides, but the information is often scattered around and a scenario is more accessible to new players than external resources.
  • There's a cool utility out there to script scenarios using PHP: http://aok.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=26,42243,,30 This makes repetitive tasks a lot simpler - But of course, it requires PHP knowledge, and some setup work. This could be turned into an online editing tool with Blockly for a visual interface: https://developers.google.com/blockly/
  • Captains mode (https://aoe2cm.net/) is a great tool, but there are still options for additional features, such as being able to configure drafting rules as a user or having the possibility to configure civ pools for a random drawing (recently discussed a bit on aoezone)
  • I've worked on the WK installer, but there can still be issues with freezing, crashing, locked files etc. The new update probably added some extra issues as well. The code quality definitely isn't the highest. Extra eyes and hands to work on this are always appreciated.
  • The mentioned update also introduces the possibility of changed unit graphics for certain civ groups. That requires making a Voobly mod with the appropriate changed SLPs. There are some nice unit graphics out there already, for those it would just be a matter of renaming the files (If you do that, make sure to ask&give credit though!)
  • The WK installer also has the option to be in a different language than english (Currently, the language option only changes the in-game language, not the installer). If someone thinks it would be nice to have that option, they could translate the file with the strings (en.txt in the resources folder) for their language (only really makes sense for those languages that are offered for in-game though)
  • The aokhotkeys online editor (https://github.com/crimsoncantab/aok-hotkeys) could be changed to include login, editing of older hotkey files, maybe voting on what hotkey files are good
  • Someone could try converting the HD campaigns to WololoKingdoms (maybe with the help of the converter I built into Trigger Studio as a starting point: https://github.com/Jineapple/aokts)
  • Openage is also a very cool project, check it out if that's something you'd like to help with: https://github.com/SFTtech/openage
  • There are obviously a lot of build order guides out there, but it could be nice to have a central list of them with links to youtube videos etc, maybe with a collection of recs from expert players using that build.
