I've been a console gamer for more than 10 years, but the time has finally come where I can't hold back the itch to ascend to the holy realm of pc gaming. I've tried multiple times over the years to get into pc gaming, but i always gave up because I couldn't handle the information overload of too many things to learn and so much complexity surrounding hardware. I don't want a capitulation to the information overload to stunt me again and blunder this new attempt. I want to overcome that scary mountain of technological nightmares.
I've played pc games for over 10 years but always games on the lowest settings and on generic home computers with no serious gaming capability and no understanding of hardware. I don't know what 60 fps looks like, or what 1080p looks like, but I want to experience it.
But more than anything, my single biggest reason for wanting to become a pc gamer is the virtually unlimited selection of games available both old and new (while console remains dependent on extremely limited "backwards compatibility" programs leaving you praying your favorite old games are added).
Since I've been a console gamer for so long, my understanding is that I've been playing on "30 fps" and below forever, but also any PC game I ever played was always on lowest settings and always low fps, so I want my gaming pc to set me free from the slavery of console shackles and I want to literally find out what playing at higher fps/resolution is like.
My intended games of focus for my gaming pc are:
world of warcraft, war thunder, age of empires 2/3 and eventually 4, and fallout 4. (Would like to experience high settings and not the low graphics of consoles)
Since I've played console for years, when I ascend to pc, I want to experience playing these games at stable 60fps and atleast high settings. (I played WoW for 10 years in generic computers, on the lowest settings, and even then BAD fps, i mean 5-20 fps, one of the least demanding games ever, pity me lol)
Most of the games I want to play are old because I don't like the direction of the AAA game market loading full paid games with microtransactions/loot boxes/etc.
Build details: I have a extremely limited understanding of hardware but I have gained some barebones understanding of basic differences (like 8gb of ram being better than 4gb of ram, and I don't fully know what ram even is, and I know for example that a 1070 is more powerful than a 1060 and so on)
I'm pretty confident that I want absolutely no less than a gtx 1060, right now the 6gb 1060 is around $270ish, but I'm struggling with the temptation of lust for power I don't even understand and wonder whether I should get the expensive 1070's at $400+ or 1080's.
In terms of picking a processor, I'm a mess, there are too many processors it feels like and my assumption is that more ghz must mean better, but some newer cards have lower ghz than older cards or less "cores" or no "multithreading". Every time I think I've selected a processor I come across some commenters say that it's awful and another one would be better, this goes on forever.
All the other parts I assume I could just fill in randomly but with the basic parameters suggested by a pc gamer friend of mine who have me a little advice:
*8gb of ram atleast (or maybe 16?)
*1tb hard drive but supposedly you should get a "ssd" for your operating system and use a "hdd" for all your general data storage/games?
*Not sure how much power supply exactly or what motherboard which apparently depends extremely on what processor you get.
I sincerely apologize if this was long winded or tldr, I just feel like I need to be thorough in details so there are no misunderstandings and because I'm extremely eager by this point to become a pc gamer.
Thanks in advance for any advice/etc.
