So the films start in an Aztec village in the middle of the forest and some guy explain that their lifelong allies, the French, the Japanese and the Malians joined them for claiming supremacy on a 5x5 km piece of woods against the Britons, the Indians, the Mongols and the Huns. Yes, the Mongols and the Huns simultaneously.
And so you see people killing themselves just to mass fell branches on the path, then these people being killed by wolves. You see a whole army of 6 valorous knights leading a capital mission to find and beat the shit out of a farmer.
On the other side, the 10 best (and only) archers of another camp are asked to settle nearby the enemy's gold mine and then to wander in circles around their cities.
You will see epic drama when a fighter (played by Nicolas Cage) will decide to fight his 50 army mates while marching after hearing an old man singing. You will see incredible action with self moving catapults and not-self moving 400 kgs relics made out of massive gold and carried out on miles by old bald men.
Some army general may even decide that the best way to win would be to visit the suburbs of an enemy town and to build towers there while nobody's looking.
Another army general find a small pond and decide to gather there 20 fishing ships and 10 galleons.
Around 15-20 minutes of the movie, you get a thrilling moment when everybody faces the reality: if they don't build a market and a blacksmith workshop soon, they'll face horrible issues.
And then a single villager, in the middle of the battle (legions of longbowmen trying to destroy rams by firing arrows on their hoods), repairs a damaged castle with his little hammer. He's shirtless, it's winter and snowy, but he keeps on hammering until the castle is brand-new like.
Really, AoE2 is gold material for a Z movie.
