This is an Idea about how I would re-design Byzantines. I've always thought that they need a little bit more to be a bit more competitively viable. These include a slight improvement to the Imperial Age and Fire Ship Bonus, Making Cataphracts a bit more manageable to go into, and giving them a unique upgrade to the Fast Fire Ship.
Defensive & Naval civilization
- Buildings) have +10%/+20%/+30%/+40% HP in the Dark/Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age.
- Camels, Skirmishers), and Spearmen) are 25% cheaper.
- Fire Ships) attack 25% faster.
- Advancing to the Imperial Age) is 35% cheaper. (up from 33%)
- Town Watch) is free.
- Team bonus: Monks heal 75% faster. (Up from 50%)
Unique units
- Cataphract) (anti-infantry heavy cavalry)) (Elite Upgrade cost reduced from 1600F, 800G to 1400F, 650G)
- Siege Fire Ship (Upgrade to Fire Ship) (Upgrade cost 500W, 500G)
Unique technologies
- Greek Fire (Fire Ships) +1 Attack +1 range)
- Logistica (Cataphracts deal trample damage) (Cost reduced from 1000F, 600G to 900F, 500G)
Technologies added
- Masonry
Siege Fire Ship Idea.

To me these would make Byzantine a much better water Civ along with making their Cataphracts a little easier to field. The Addition of Masonry allows their building to be even more resilient.
This is my first attempt at doing something like this. I would love to hear your opinions on how you would make Byzantines a better Civ.
