Using gates to defend Feudal walls is bad gameplay?

In particular, I'm referring to the thing where a villager can put a gate perpendicular to the inside of your wall and build from outside the range of Feudal archers. It seems like a totally unnecessary bit of safety for Feudal wall-ins to have, since a single layer of palisade around you is unbreakable except to forward towers. Stone walls already exist for if you want to be nigh-unbreakble in Feudal, and making the level of safety you are will to pay for an actual decision (in a way that slightly nerfs Feudal full-walls) would probably improve gameplay overall.

Do you guys think this assessment makes sense? If so, what would you change to fix it? Making it so gates cannot be built from their short end seems like it would be a fine (though admittedly a bit inelegant) fix to me, since they have to have their long end exposed somewhere if they're to actually function as a gate anyways.
