Fish trap/Fishing ship mechanics

As i remember, in old versions of AOE2, it was easier to collect food from fish traps. If you had only one tile between traps and dock, no matter where (directions) traps are, there would be no problem. But now, fishing ships are trying to collect fish in "same angle" for every trap (left, right, top, bottom), follow weird directions and sometimes confuse and wait above traps as idle.

Why didn't the developers solve this issue? If it was that hard, why earlier versions of AOE2 were able to do it better?
