I have heard from several pros and upcoming talent that there are just too many civs in the game. I am not sure if adding new civilizations as DLCs will help the game as it did for AoE 2 HD back in 2013-2014. Also, it is amazing to note that the original devs wanted to limit the number of civs in the game to enable new players to learn the game more easily.
Personally, Yes, there are way too many civs. A long-time friend of mine used to play AoE back in 2008-2009. He thinks the game is too complicated now and for a game to be this complicated, there are better and easier games out there ( This is his opinion and honestly, I don't know how to counter it )
I am really confused. And from what I know, Microsoft has a big "announcement" coming on April 10. I am not sure if they know adding more civs to the game will go "how" with the players
