At least a one game. Just to set your starting Elo around 1000.
It's counter intuitive, because being carried in multiplayer is more beginner friendly. But the reason is the peculiar rating system of Age of Empire:
The very first ranked game you play, you will have an provisional Elo of 1000 (+-50 depending on the result of your first match): provisional because it will fluctuate more at first.
Now if you jump into a new category, your Elo from your former category will be taken into account to give you a provisional rating in the new category. All good, skills do correlate across categories, so it should give a more accurate initial rating, thus converging faster, right?
WRONG!!
Team Elo system, is utterly broken, in a very inflationary way. It means if you start playing team, only with friends a bit stronger than you, you can really well be worth 600 single player Elo, but rated 1400 team. And that will be your provisional SP rating should you ever want to try that. Which means you will need a lot more ludicrous and completely useless defeats to converge to your Elo.
Yes, you can insta resign, but between the queuing time, the 1 minute once a lobby is found, and loading time, you still waste easily 5-10 minutes per game, as well as desktop and server electricity (you don't directly pay for the later, but it's still a waste, polar bears are dying), of which you have to lose tens. And your opponents lose that too.
So starting with one game in every category first, even insta resigning them, is the best one can do to mitigate that stupid system.
Of course, the obvious fix would be for Forgotten Empires to hire a math or a CS undergrad intern; have her familiarize with the relevant par of the code for 1 month, have her learn the ins and outs of the Elo system for one week, have her fix the bug responsible for inflationary ratings in team game in one hour; give her one month to slack while the updates are pushed and tested, and have her fix the starting Elo in your non first category to use the correlation between ratings, and not just a one on one correspondence;
if there is more time, let her think about Glicko2 and why its existence makes Elo obsolete and shameful to use in a video game.
I'm suggesting an undergrad internship because I really hope that if they had the time and ability to fix it, they would already have done it.
