So, if you really need to how many vills your enemy has, just click castle and hover your mouse over the spies research and divide the cost of it by 200, voila! :) For example, if spies cost 20000 gold, your enemy has 100 vills and so on. Nice trick for 1v1.
EDIT: You need a castle though.
