Why is there a pause function in an RTS game like AOE2?

For real though? I see this as a serious issue. It’s different if you’re playing a turn based game like Final Fantasy or an MMO, but in what world does it make sense to allow pausing in Real Time? That defeats the purpose of Real Time Strategy.
