As the title states what do you guys think about the current state of the portuguese, i say there a bit underpowered but im also not quite sure. Lastly in what way do do you guys think they should get a buff/or if you even think they need a buff?

The beta is only letting me play Multiplayer, and even when I go to the lobby browser, there's only 1-2 games at most. And even then, I've never actually gotten one to start, it just goes to the "waiting for all players" screen and then sits there and does nothing.
So for the moment I've just been generating random maps in the map editor and playing against AI that way.
Happy New Year to everyone of you of r/aoe2
2017 has been another exciting year for Age of Empires 2, as well as some amazing tournaments and the amazing community support from everyone who has contributed in keeping this game growing and alive.
Whether you're a new player, someone who's revisited the game after many years or who have been playing aoe2 for as long as you can remember. You are all to thank for the amazing success towards perhaps one of the most timeless and still top selling and played medieval RTS's.
Casters, Top players, Casual players, Admin workers behind the scenes, Map makers, Developers, Modders and Scripters who have made the impossible become possible as well as everyone who's contributed to the game one way or another deserve a huge thanks to keeping the game up to date as well as in general hugely improving the performance.
And here's to 2018 where aoe2 will get even greater improvements and new features.
Most importantly everyone of you of r/aoe2 who frequent here daily or simply lurk as well as those of you who are new year. We hope to see more of you get involved with the community. Especially with the new definite editions coming soon in the future.
Once again from myself and the rest of the moderators, thank you for keeping aoe2 alive.
We love this game! :)
Happy New Year everyone and let's make 2018 even better than 2017 and other previous years!
In celebration to highlight 2017, feel free to post your favourite moment, from various clips or videos you have seen so far. Whether it ranges from a top play, an epic win, or an epic fail or even a come back!
So im pretty new to Age of empires and just installed voobly a few days ago. I think if have pretty solid mechhanics(was grandmaster in sc2 once) but i dont really know all building and units yet. So the thing that bothers me is that i feel like everyone that plays online is just towerrushing every game and i cant really deal with towers before 3rd age if i dont build towers myselve. Is this just how age of empires is played? he towerrushes me i build towers faster nex to him so my tower kills his cause units dont do any dmg against it? If thats the case ill try another rts cause its pretty boring TT
Just 2 years after I got this game I now have 1000 hours, the first time I ever managed to reach 1k hours in a game! Thank you to the aoc community for being the best gaming community out there.
I haven't played aoe2 in a few months so i'm looking for friends to practice with me
i have 100+ (rated) games on the begginers lobby and few on medieval siege

So my mom has never been a fan of me playing video games or the sort, but since I am in college now I am able to have more freedom:
Here are the few builds I came up with:
Haven't picked out a monitor yet, but will soon so if anyone has advice that would be great as well. I have around $800-$900 for next month (if I calculated the money I've made correctly). And I need some of that money for food since I only have 1.5 meal swipes a day at the dorm.
Games I play/would want to play using the build:
League of Legends
CSGO
Age of Empires III
Starcraft II
Fortnite
PUBG
Rainbow Six Seige
Civ VI and maybe a few others!
Thank you for your help! :)
edit: I already have a Razer Blackwidow I got from a friend and a mouse I use as well so no need for peripheral recs :)
Question in the title
So my friend just got the game(on steam) and we are trying to set his ES Online up. Thing is, he can only run Asian Dynasties and the War Chiefs and not the original game. He still has to put the CD key in(done when launching the original game), but is not able to reach that point since the game crashes before then. We cannot make him an account to play on Asian Dynasties with us, and have gone through a couple fixes online that haven't work. It has apparently happened to a lot of people, so if you have fixes please share them.

After watching King of the Desert and the announcement of patch 5.7, which will nerf Saracens and especially Turks, due camel nerfs, I think it's time for buffs.
The devs have done a perfect job two times, already. With Magyars and more importantly in this case with Franks. A civ, which never saw any play, let alone in tournaments, evolved to a legitimate choice for pros.
They didn't change the "philosophy" of the civs, they just buffed them slightly, so they become fun to play.
And I want a similar treatment for civs like Koreans, Turks and saracens. I know not all civs can be top tier, but these civs were long enough shit tier, to deserve a buff.
I have been trying to playing AoE 2 multiplayer for the first time, and every time I manage to get in a game my ping is insane. I can play any other game and it be perfectly fine but not this one...I have tried using voobly and the steam version but neither work properly, and it's extremely frustrating.
Hi Everyone
So I was just playing a 2v2, the teams were balanced, there was nice communication between all players, some interesting first skirmishes and then I disconnected (I know. I'm the ass who ruined their game).
Thing is, the way we were communicating, I think it would not have been a problem for them to save and exit and us to restore the game and continue.
I didn't even bother to contact them via steam though. Because when a game disconnects, its just ... typically people just want to continue the game. Sometimes someone opts for 'save and exit' so the team thats short does not lose Elo, but thats rare.. There is no culture or tradition of restarting games or loading games, when playing at a casual level.
Any thoughts on how to set up a culture of resuming disconnected games on HD? Has anyone ever actually tried doing this? Is there any simple change to the lobby system that could be implemented (either by Steam or by Skybox or as a third party add-on?)
Just curious regarding your thoughts on this. (And yeah, some smart ass will tell me 'get better internet' and yes, of course, but the point is that disconnects happen and it would be nice if we could make them be less of a literally game-breaking thing).
Hi! Im pretty new and I wanted to learn from pros, so I would like to download games but they won't appear on the save and recorded files, how I get to see them?
Three of us are trying to play multiplayer through steam with the HD edition. We’re all on the same network so it should switch to a lan connection. However, it does not appear to be as whoever is hosting has massive (up to 10000 ms) pings to the other computers, so the game is unplayable. We have tried different hosts, turning off firewall, but the issue persists. How do we set up a LAN game? Should we just use the compatibility patch and an external program?
I already purchased the game a couple times in the past and have lost the keys over time. Now I have a steam copy however do not have an online account. I am wanting to play with my buddy in the military while he is deployed. I am wanting to buy an account that is not a level 0 and has decent civs. PM me, thanks.
Hi guys,
I am looking for games with multiples factions/races/nations/sides to choose from. More diverse - better. (think of Civilization where differences are only bonus-oriented and cosmetic, and Endless Legend , Warcraft or HoMM where each faction has different play-style and features).
I want a game where there is a point of playing again with different faction "just to feel it", even if you know mechanics of the game already. Again, in Civ after playing one game you pretty know how it is gonna be with different nation. But in game like Endless Legend it is worth to check several races as they have different story lines, different special mechanics, different visuals etc.
The genre doesn't matter (most likely it is gonna be a strategy though), it could be from any year, I am open to play in oldies as well as far it will run on Win 10 and is still playable today.
What I AM NOT looking for is a game where there is high degree of modifying your faction. Unfortunately many space sims are going this way by having few races where you can modify visuals of your spaceships etc.
Visual difference is at least minimum. I don't care if there is a text-based or numer-based game with 100 nations which I can't even see. Ideally: visuals, different tech tree, mechanics, victory conditions.
Here is the catch: I have played in many games in my life. I know most of bigger titles and probably I will know most things you will recommend me. So anything less obvious would be extremely welcoming.
First games which come to my mind: - Paradox's games (Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Crusader Kings, Stellaris etc.) - Blizzard's games (Starcraft, Warcraft) - C&C series, - Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Empire Earth, - space sims: Galactic Civilizations, Masters of Orion etc.
- Warhammer, - Total War, - Dominions series, - Original War, Earth series, Company of Heroes, Sudden Strike, Blitzkrieg, Men of War,
Parthian tactics and zealotry affects them, so in theory, if you convert a big group of them before those upgrades, you get some really op camel archers. Also, they might get that bonus dmg against buildings.
Probably not a practical way to go about it though, maybe having a berber ally, then both switch to enemy and let your "ally" convert them, then switch back to ally?
Would be fun if they had some reliable way of obtaining them, dont you think? ;)
100% win rate.
Hello, I've been playing vs. brutefoce with my wife and we can beat him on easy but standard is simply too hard. There are some other AI options too like barbarians, Illuminati, from the AI pack. We are still learning so Im wondering if there's a better option on standard than bruteforce that's not so good.
Haven't played in a while and the expansions are completely new to me, so I was looking for some resources to improve my skills once again. I've been watching SpiritoftheLaw for basic civ overviews but I was wondering if anyone had any good resources for perfecting rushes and learning under the new meta. Thanks!

i havent made an account on my steam purchase of the game, but because ive logged into my account it says 1 per CD key, anyway, is there a way for me to make an account? as im not so good at this game, but my level 80 CIV makes anyone whos a rank the same as me think im some expert player, so im forced to play higher ranks. as the lower guys think CIV level makes a difference..... (i play aoe3 vanilla)
For me, it would be a mix of the Aztecs and the Spanish(I'll let you guy's guess what I am)
I bought aoe 3 complete edition in a store brand new with codes that work. When i tried to create an account to play multiplayer it said error 101, the error when you already created an account on the cd. But i just bought it new so what do I need to do to fix this.
Hi,
Me and two friends have tried to play on GameRanger a few times against AIs and the game will freeze after 30 to 60 minutes. We tried both Warchiefs and Asian Dynasties, same issue.
We can send message to each other, so something is working, but the game just keeps waiting for some sort of sync or whatever.
As soon as one of us leaves the session (or the host), things go back to normal, but usually AI won't attack back, it will just sit there.
No prizes or anything just for fun.
Lets see who the top aoe2 redditors are.
Most of time my economy is pretty good, but when should I begin building a military and how should you defend against an early-game rush if you don't yet have a standing military?

As the title says I'm looking for someone who wants to do the xpmod Post your username down here and maybe steam or discord so we can plan it since im not online on AOE3 all day.

after 5 hours of playing, I finally beat the fucking AI on hard. I initially loaded up hardest, since thats where i left off on AOE2 classic.. that was a mistake.. three times. The AI micro in this game is unreal now.. and my units are all mongoloids fixated on cherry Popsicles apparently.
Have you ever sent hundreds and hundreds of Berber pikemen and hussar's to their death because the AI decided that an army comp of 80+ spanish paladin and a few skirmishers was the way to go and you were playing on Lombardia where theres apparently 7 relics and three gold piles in the entire map?
I cant believe how exactly the same and totally different this is. Why did they change all the hot keys? is there an AI mod to make my pixel warriors not spend so much time sniffing each others asses?
I have so many questions.
So i bought this game today and i cant join any game on the ESO. A friend cant join my game, i cant join my friend's. Also i cant join any public game.
I can whisper to my friend no problem, my internet is fine. What can i do?
I like that idea very much. On the other hand, it is funny.
For example; when a lumberjack sees an enemy, he
(Aggresive stance): immediately attacks and follows him, do not return his work.
(Defensive stance): attacks, but not follows after that, returns his work.
(Stand ground): only responds attack (such like eagles).
(No attack): doesn't do anything, tries to go on his work as normal villagers.
I think it would be really overpowered. What are your opinions? Is there any suggestions that prevents to be overpowered. Any trade-offs maybe?
Long story short, I used to play a lot of AoE online, but I lost my account so I had to make a new one. I have an 82% win-rate now and Im a 1st lieutenant with a lvl 24 home city. I have less than 1,000,000 in supremacy xp.
If I try to join a high ranking game, I get kicked cuz my home city is too low, and if try to join any other game, people accuse me of a DDOSer and kick my. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I would honestly be down for someone to add me so i can lose a bunch of games in a row to make my win percentage lower. I don't care about stats I just want to play.
Directly above the Start Game and Cancel buttons, there is a box labeled "So", IP, tech tree, M(S)Q. What is "So"? Also, mine is grayed out.
When I play AoE II HD, I tend to like playing with a friend against the AI. But I've noticed that some of the newer maps, like the Nile one, don't allow you to have AI players, and don't show up in single player. Yet I can't find the reason for this at the moment - does anyone know why? Seems daft to me.
I can't find it anywhere, but I've seen it on the workshop before. If anyone can link it or tell me the name I'll appreciate it quite a bit.

Which unit gives you the most frustration? For me, it's the Eagle Warrior or maybe Conqs.
Hi, im starting playing AoE2. I come from SC2, and im mostly a macro player (i used to just build 1 or 2 units -marine & medievacs- and just focus on economy, outplay enemy army by numbers by spaming those units and upgrading olny the techs for buffing those units.
There are any guides to start playing focused on that playstyle? Also im not interested on the ccampaign at all, so i would preffer to learn by not playing it.
Thanks!
sorry for my english, but i'll try to be brief.
Im new in the game and i want to improve playing against real good AI.
Probably there is a lot of people who have asked the same question i'm doing, but how do i put the AI barbarian for example (recently i reed that is one of the bests) for playing offline in the voobly version?
Thanks for the help :)
Is it possible to do this for wololo? Blind random plus the new maps from the expansions in the mix?
Hi reddit, I'm looking for a mod that add new gods with their own units and play style to the game. Does one like this exist?
Do you think we're going to see more the Slavs in the Meta after the release of 5.7 ?
15% farming bonus even in late imperial seems quite a relevant improvement, and they were never seen as weak before this (even if never picked up in KotD...).
I think they are quite strong at all stage of play now :
Their Dark Age has nothing special, but they start having interesting options from Feudal. Their Team Bonus (and to a lesser extant their token tracking) seems to be screaming for early aggression. 3 military building means +15 free pop, which is an equivalent of 75 Wood + building time. Their farm bonus should become significant from mid-feudal. I think they can do pretty much what they want at this stage, including archers : even if you're less incited to go archers because farming bonus will still boost your villagers, upgrades, and various eco techs. 2 Eco bonuses have always been a good thing for early game, even if the Slavs' ones might not be the greatest ones for this stage.
They have a very good Castle Age with a lot of options. Their knights are okay (sharing upgrades with Boyars and Light Cavs might help you later). They have arguably the best castle age Siege (they have to argue with celts about this :-) ). Their Monk UT might not be awesome, but they have all monk techs. Only crossbowmen start to become subpars due to the absence of thumb ring...
Once you've build a Castle, you get the very strong Castle Age Boyars. I see them as a mix of knights and camels because of their ability to chase and counter knights (probably the reason why their speed was set to 1.4 instead of 1.35). Their relative weakness against ranged units is not that bad in castle age, especially because they are slightly faster than knights and can 3-shots Xbows. Finally, as Gold is less relevant than Food in Castle age, they are also cheaper than knights. They are probably a top tier Pocket UU due to their ability to counter knights while also being able to fullfill the same role.
Early Imp, Elite Boyars could create an interesting power spike because they are faster and cheaper to upgrade than paladins. Cheap Onagers are another interesting option, and contrary to some other Siege Civs, they don't require an expensive Unique Tech to boost their siege.
Late Imp, they would have very strong Siege (around top 5), FU Infantry that you don't want yo meet in a narrow path, FU Monks, FU Heavy Cavalry (EBoyars are equivalent to Paladins for me, even a bit more specialized and less well-rounded) and FU Hussars (sort of AoE2 Swiss knife for me). Okay their defenses are not excellent, their archers are bad, but they have on the best Late game eco bonus of the game with +15% Farming Rate. Yes, Druzhina is cost and food heavy, but as Slavs you're the very definition of food-heavy.
Finally, their Post Imp (trash wars) is quite Good, with FU Druzhina Halbs, FU Hussars and mediocre but decent Skirms. At this stage, their Food Bonus gives them an edge against most civs.
To summarize, I think that the combination of 2 eco bonuses (and one of the best middle to late-game one) and a versatile tech tree should make them a powerful and interesting civ. So I really hope they will be picked a bit more now :-)
Onagers do 50 melee damage and 12 damage vs siege weapons, for a total of 62. They have 60 health, so an onager dies in one onager shot. Ironclad gives +4 melee armor, so onagers will only take 46 melee damage, plus 12 bonus damage, for a total of 58 damage, allowing them to survive a 1vs1 onager. Is ironclad underrated?
There is a Rise of Rome mod that was recently updated, but I'm using the Steam Edition of AOE2 HD. Does anyone know how I can use that mod via AOE 2 HD?
Here is what I'm referring to, it was posted a couple days ago:
Hey all! /u/ChuKoNoob has recently been doing weekly Unique Unit discussions, and today I'm going to take over for this week for the discussion about the Frankish Unique Unit, the Throwing Axeman!
It is a very interesting unit, because it deals melee damage at range. It is classified as infantry, which means it is affected by all the infantry blacksmith upgrades and by the barracks upgrades. (Tracking, Squires, Arson). Here are its base stats (before blacksmith upgrades), as of the latest patch:
COST: 55 Food, 25 Gold
60 HP (50 before 4.8)
7 ATK (+1 vs Standard Building, +1 vs Eagles)
0/0 Armor.
3 Range
Some hidden Stats:
2.03 Rate of Fire
Frame Delay: 10
100% Accuracy
LOS: 5
Movement Speed: 1 (0.9 before African Kingdoms)
Training Time: 17 Seconds
Its upgrade cost is 1000 Food, and 750 Gold (850 in AoC), and for that several key attributes of the Throwing Axeman are improved:
70 HP (60 before 4.8)
8 ATK (+2 vs Standard Building, +2 vs Eagles)
1/0 Armor
4 Range
2.03 Rate of Fire
Frame Delay: 8
100% Accuracy
LOS: 6
Movement Speed: 1 (0.9 before African Kingdoms)
Training Time: 17 Seconds (less after conscription)
Among the significant improvements that the elite upgrde offers are 10 more HP, 1 more melee armor, and 1 more range. Also, the frankish Imperial Age Unique Tech is Bearded Axe, which gives the throwing axemen yet another range, for a grand total of 5 after Elite. Here are some topics to discuss:
How Important are the blacksmith & Barracks upgrades for this unit?
How have the buffs to the Franks helped the usage of this unit? It now has 10 more HP, has a higher base movement speed, costs less to upgrade, moves faster because of the addition of squires to the Frank Tech Tree, and it has more Bonus Damage vs Buildings with arson.
When it is used in the Frankish Army, what roles does it fulfil? Is it used to protect the knight-line from enemy pikes/halbs? Is it used as ranged support?
What are your thoughts on its 100% accuracy?
Is this unit viable in competitive play? Is it too much of a hassle to get a castle out to start production? Are there other units such as the Swordsman line or the Hand Cannoneer that can fulfil the same job as the Throwing Axeman?
If you'd like to learn more about this unit, here are some resources you can go to:
Wiki Page. Probably good for learning about its stats http://ift.tt/2lqmECv
Resonance22's "Break the Meta" game cast with mass throwing axemen

EDIT: Formatting
I'm practicing against the AI before going into the multiplayer, and I find myself always falling behind militarily. I'd be too focused on getting my economy up and running, by the time it's satisfactory, I would've already lost my allies, and the enemies grouped up against me. I'll be sending my troops one by one from the barracks straight to their deaths. I bumped down the difficulty from hard to moderate and I still find myself outnumbered. At what age should I start building an army? And is the AI too difficult or should I expect the same challenge when playing against other players?
I recently started playing as Ra a bit because I like all the empowering (have much of a boost do Priests provide when empowering?) but, when starting as Eggy, you don't have any scouts, unless you include the priests but their obelisks cost gold which I'd rather spend on building a temple.
Should I put a labourer on gold even during the archaic age, and then put that gold into obelisks?
So far I've just been waiting for classical and scouting using the free myth unit.

Usually the FE team changes things for a reason. And that's awesome, I for one love change. But for the life of me I cannot figure out why they believe a nerf to ALL camels is necessary. Especially as significant a nerf as they received in the new 5.7 balance patch.
The Indian Imperial Camel is very strong and possibly deserved a minor nerf, as well as the Berber Camel Archer. Which definitely deserved a nerf (Which it got). But why punish every other camel civ for one or two units being relatively strong? Keeping in mind that Mamelukes, Camel Archers and regular Camels are all affected which impacts the Berbers, Byzantines, Chinese, Ethiopians, Indians, Malians, Mongols, Persians, Saracens and Turk civilizations specifically.
As per the patch notes:
Balance Improvements: Anti-camel bonus increased for all anti-cavalry units (except camels)
A further analysis (Credit: SaintMichaels) has provided the numbers around this:
Spearmen now do +12 damage against Camels instead of +9 (+3 base damage, no upgrades)
Pikemen now do +18 damage against Camels instead of +16 (+4 base damage, no upgrades)
Halberdiers now do +26(!) damage against Camels instead of +17 (+6 base damage, no upgrades)
Eagle Warrior & Elite Eagle Warrior +1 Damage against Camels (+2, +3). Eagle Scouts unchanged
Elite Genoese Crossbowmen do +6 damage against Camels instead of +5. Normal Genoese Unchanged.
(Elite) Kamayuks do (+10) +6 damage against Camels instead of (+6) +4
Chieftains for the Vikings now makes Infantry do +4 damage to Camels instead of +2
As listed, Camels bonus damage against other Camels are unchanged. Towers and the Town Center are also unchanged and still only do +1 damage to Camels.
What I'm hoping is that someone who can crunch the numbers can figure out just how much more effective the spear line in particular is against camels with these changes so that we can understand just how impactful these changes will be. I feel like even if a spear line unit needs one less hit to kill a camel, that in itself is incredibly significant and in my opinion, unnecessary.
Let me know what you think about this change, was it was justified or not? How significant is this change in your eyes? Should regular camels have been changed at all?
Hi everyone, I've been trying to beat the hard ai, and just lost against it, so the record is 1-1. I think my early game is pretty good (at least for my level) but my late game is always pretty poor.
Thanks!

i wouldn't say japanese and chineese both need them as well because then i'd get down....OH WAIT, i said it.
whatever, if you really think jp/cn don't need buffs (lol you're delusional), you can't say that kr/viet don't need as well
it's honestly not possible to say the opposite let's be real
ok?
6 months for a camel nerf?
thefuck EF team? what are you doing lol
P.S. why are there no korean/japanese/chinese kawaii girls? not even as villagers? i know this is meant to be historical, but are auto-pilot mangonels historical or realistic? or Brit knights with France lotus flower as barding?
Hey everyone, we have an active discord dedicated to Age of Empires with about 10-12 active people (30 others come on rarely). We like to do full discord games with 8 people, so we need a few more regulars that speak English. All skill levels welcome because we do lots of fun games such as FFAs, 2v2v2v2 sudden death, KOTH and CTR. Message me or reply if you want the link
To make this very clear, I have 3 different friends around town that I play age of empires 3 with. We have all played individually together. Their names are Cody, Josh, and Chris. I always host the matches. I've never had issues hosting until now.
I have been playing for two years with Cody with no issue. Last month Josh AND Chris got age of empires 3, and I have been playing with them with no issue. We just got the chance to play with Cody as a group of 4 today, and started running into the issue.
We tried on both the Asian Dynasties expansion and the regular edition. The end result was the same. Cody could join my lobby and start a match without issue, but when Cody was in the lobby Josh and Chris could not join. When I had a clear lobby again both Josh and Chris were able to connect successfully. Upon inviting Cody, he was unable to join the lobby.
Josh and Chris hosted their own lobbies independent of mine, and I was able to join theirs but Cody failed on both.
Why is Cody able to connect to me without issue. but in Josh and Chris' presence he is blocked all of a sudden?
So I am buying my dad this game for Christmas (I know 3 days behind, he don't care). He has played Age of Empires 1 since it came out, nearly every day. I consider myself a pretty good gamer and he completely wipes the floor with me every time I go up against him. It is insane how good he is.
Anyways.
If I buy it now can he play the beta? and is there any form of release date? I've seen oct 2017 (delayed) and now I'm seeing Dec 2018 which is over a year delay.
is it even worth for noob to do monk rush or I can just get away with boom. I am 1850 on HD. I played only team games and I have kinda perfect boom. Just started playing on voobly. I got to 13xx and I lose hard to players of similar elo when I do early rush
on other hand Ive lost games even when I had much better eco than opponents lol
I am not luring deer because they are usually outside together with boars so I do 27+2 up
Sometimes I place buildings incorrectly and I want to remove them. And how do I take a screenshot without the " Save " menu appearing ?
I've played the original Aoe2 back 10+ years ago. Back when everyone was using the bootlegged one with a ton of bugs (relic win will freeze the game once it hits 100yrs). Back then, I can confidently say Aoe2 was the best RTS during that time. Eventually I went to college, life went on, etc, and I got into Starcraft 2 (currently playing at Platinum/Diamond league).
After a long hiatus, and wanting to reminisce a little, I finally bought the Aoe2 off of steam for the steam sale, and put in about 50 hrs so far. The old AI was stupid, it would send units after units to your base, then to your castle. The new hardest AI is extremely good. And I only get a win rate of around 25 to 50% (even if I plant a fast defensive castle). The rate at which it expands is insane. If you don't play aggressive, I don't think it's possible to win macro-wise against the hardest AI. This is a major improvement in terms of AI scripting.
However, my biggest complaint for this game is that my units are... just too stupid... Is there an IQ upgrade for these units? No, seriously, is there any way to increase the IQ of my units? While the AI micro controls each skirmisher and splits them too! I feel like my units all suffer from down syndrome or something...
Maybe I'm beating a dead horse, because I'm sure I can't be the only one who mentioned this. Or maybe it's because I've been spoiled by SC2's smooth game play. Right now... the "S" in RTS for aoe2 feels more like a micromanagement fest instead of strategy game. These units are just too stupid. The attack move for some reason locks on to random units instead of attacking whoever is in front of them. I know some units have a "sight" limit, but I've tried using different stances, (defensive for archers, etc) and overall, it's a frustating experience coming back. I mean... I used to crush the hardest AI, 7v1, no problem. Now, if I'm not playing aggro, I'll even lose to a hard AI. The days of out-macroing the AI is over.
My villagers also suffer from low IQ syndrome, for some reason they keep blocking each other, especially when mining or picking berries. Come on! Am I asking too much from my villagers? This is reminiscence of SC1 where units just feel much more clunky (control groups have a unit limit, poor AI routing, etc) and can't even perform the most minimal of tasks.
For those who played SC2, how do you think this game compares with Aoe2? How are other returning players coping with this? You guys got any tips for me? Is there something wrong with what I'm doing? like some special stance you have to click or are low IQ units natural? Is Aoe2 more micro-intensive than ever? Or should I stop playing against AI and play against humans so it actually evens the playing field? (still haven't finished all the campaign yet, and I want to finish it before I get into multiplayer)
Sometimes I place farms incorrectly and I want to remove them. And how do I take screenshots without the " Save " menu appears ?
Me and some friends want to organize a small LAN party between ourselves (like we usually do). I destroyed them in Empire Earth last time and now they want to take their revenge by playing 3 vs me in AOE2. I've played the campaign when I was a kid, so I'm a huge noob when it comes to AOE2. To train myself for the D-Day I would like to know which civ is a good one against multiple players. Anyone can give me pointers?

We have lan-party planned with a group of friends and we will be playing aoe2 hd for sure. Now an idea that came up yesterday was to do at least 1 game a bit later on while being slightly drunk/stoned on a real-world map (earth or europe, doesn't really matter) and politically role-play the heck out of it. By that I mean we all start as a specific country and try to honor all the cliches that come with that country (America making 'freedom', Italy switching sides, france and england never having peace, you name it) without focussing that much on the game itself. However, how would we organize such a game where everyone has their specific civ with it's first town-center at roughly the right spot on the map? Are there any specific settings for this? As a last question, would you guys have any other suggestions to make this work better?
So I have a few friends that I play with and we often do 2v2's or 3v3's against each other and we kinda came up with a "Rules of Engagement" for when we play to keep things civil and to reduce the "that was a cheap trick" stuff down between us.
Just wanted some feedback or if there are some suggestions on things we should add. We usually just add stuff as we play if we find something that seems unfair or cheap to each other
Rules of Engagement!
No monitors - They cannot be spawned
No petards - They cannot be spawned
no full cannon armies
No fighting settlers in a civilized zone (towns or if a military is within defending range)
No skipping military units to attack a colony or settlers
Trade monopoly can only be triggered after 2hours and 30mins of gameplay
We are considering putting in that ceasefires are banned as last night we had a match were one of our guys kept using it and it just kinda ruined the game for the one team.
Let me know what you think! Thanks!
Land grab reduces the cost for mill, plantation and livestock pen by 40% and they are built in a quarter of a regular building time. This gives you mill for 240 wood, plantation for 480 wood and pen for 120 wood. Advanced rice paddy gives you, well, a rice paddy for 200 wood instead of 400, and provides some extra HPs to a paddy.
I've noticed not many players use it, althrough it saves a great amount of wood. For example, around 23 minutes of game all hunts and mines are gone, you have to build 3 mills and 3 plantations and that costs you 3600 wood without land grab or 2160 with land grab (you save 1440 wood).
Do you use it? And why not?
Ok, so like, I get why you need a TC to make babies, right? You need somewhere to garrison privately for a few minutes. And of course, towers always have an archer on duty, and the inside of a ram gets way too stuffy, and Castles always leave the front door wide open, etc.
But then last night I was playing Khmer and I needed to build a TC so I could wall hop some vills, and it was cheaper to rebuild TC than go up to Feudal for towers (375 vs. 500 resources), so I had to delete my TC (you're only allowed to have one TC in the Dark age, unless you convert a second one). So I thought, no worries, I have 4 houses, each one has 5 garrison slots, TCs have 15 slots, so that's 3x, TC villagers take 25 seconds, so that's 3x25 seconds = 75 seconds, so I'll be able to pump out 4 villagers every 75 seconds, which will average out to 1 vill every 19 seconds.
But when I clicked on a house (ANY of them) there weren't any options. Even when I garrisoned a mix of males and female villagers. Am I missing something here or is this just an oversight?
Hi all,
I wanted to organise a little tournament within my aoe2 players fellows but for one reason or the other they don't feel like they could really commit. I already have a sort of plan with a game mode, map and some ideas for the match setups.
Where would I have to start to organise an online tournmanet? If I have to think of a platform, I'd say HD with expansions (mainly just because I had problems installing WK but I should give it another try). HD ELO maybe <2000, noob-friendly.
I am pretty sure you guys will deliver some awesome feedback, so thanks in advance :)
Has anyone else noticed that we seem to have built up our own little pidgin language? I've been noticing this more and more lately and I find it really interesting. Our community consists of players from all over the world, of course, many or even most of whom do not speak English as a first language. Nonetheless we seem to have picked English as our lingua franca, but we've simplified it into a pidgin.
What really got me was when I realized that I've started using it although I'm a native English speaker, and that many other fluent speakers (like Viper or Slam) use it as well, for communicating with other players.
Here are the rules of our pidgin that I've noticed:
Only present tense. In the pidgin we don't say "he lost" or "he will attack," we often say "he lose," or "he attack." We infer the tense from context and never conjugate the verbs.
Wherever it's possible to, use only singular nouns. In the pidgin we don't say "make skirms," we say "make skirm" or "make hc." Yet we might say "kts to you" to warn an ally of an attack, keeping the plural because it's important to convey that there's more than one of them. Nobody would interpret "make skirm" as "please make one skirmisher"-- the plurality is implied and can be omitted. The same does not apply to "kts to you," which is different from "kt to you."
Interchangeability of pronouns. To tell an ally what an enemy is making, we might just say "him skirm" or "he skirm"-- they're equivalent and the subject/object distinction is thrown out.
Omission of verbs and helping verbs wherever possible. "me arch" in normal English would be expressed as "I will be making archers," but we've left out three implied words to reach the shorter yet equivalently informative "me arch." Notice again the interchangeability of pronouns at work, as well-- it doesn't matter that we're using an object pronoun where one might normally expect a subject pronoun. Other examples~ "gg me," "me dead," "army here"
This is just what I've noticed. I wonder if this is particular to our community or if these rules apply to the larger gaming community. I don't really play other games so I can't say. What have you all noticed?
This series is great, very helpful for people trying to improve their play.

I did this once and I didn’t know how to explain that it was an accident as I was getting flamed in chat for being a lamer. Though, sometimes I lame anyways, so it’s not like I really cared. I just found it really amusing.

Just downloaded the complete version on Steam today. It turns out I actually have some old files on my laptop from the War Chiefs pack I had years ago. While it's nice that I have my French civilization, I think it might be messing with my ESO account creation. When I try to make a new account it gives me the Error101 which means my CD key has already been used. However I just bought the thing on Steam so I don't think someone has taken it. My guess is that the game is still reading the old CD key I used years ago and not the new key I downloaded. Do I have to uninstall and delete my old files to get the new ESO account? There's no way I still have the info needed to recover my old ESO account. I'd like to keep my old save because it's nice to have but I don't want to do that if there's another solution.
Thank you for your help. Looking forward to getting back into the game!
Like say I'm playing as the Japanese and my opponent is playing the Britons. Is it better for me to focus on Calvert to counter his archers, or to focus on my oe stronger infantry?
Hey, first — I'm well aware of other posts containing the same question, but they haven't given me a satisfactory answer, and the one I'd like to ask about is already archived, hence I'll briefly explain my issue here.
I have a 1366x768 laptop, but my AoC is weirdly adjusted to it despite recognising resolution in the settings. The menu is cut from both ends (you can see it's a tighter than it should be), while the in-game view seems to be rather zoomed-in. I've already tried utilising both the UserPatch and Voobly assistance, but it didn't help in a bit.
I came across this link from this sub-reddit from over 3 years ago and followed (I'm pretty sure that successfully) the tips provided on this page, which was about creating custom screen sizes, but all of unfortunate they weren't found by Windows 10 I'm using, which in turn meant that I couldn't set them on my desktop, not to mention in the game itself.
Therefore, I'm raising that same issue yet again. Is there a proper way to fix it? Am I missing something regarding the "downsampling" method? Or maybe there's yet another route?
Thanks in advance, any help is much appreciated!
Hey,
atm I'm still playing over steam since my friends don't have voobly (yet). Two of the games I played today there was a player who said "hf with my gay porn" and started fucking up his own connection or something. The game completly froze every 2 seconds so it was unplayable. I did not want to leave tbh so I played the whole game through. But isn't there something I can do about it? And also, does this happen in voobly too?
I just bought EE after not really playing since 2006. I'm back up to an 1800 rank, but it seems like the ranks have changed a lot. What is a top 10% rank? Is there an online supremacy leaderboard?
Currently on steam don't see any lfg or anything like that for aoe 2. Just curious how you all find people to play with and team up. Thanks

So I have gtx 1060(6GB) i5 6500 and he has an i5 2400 gtx 1060(3gb)
We try to run a 2 player vs 6 AI game on 500 pop, on giant or large and my PC freezes. Any suggestions to solve this other than playing with smaller pop/map
Is it too much for the game to handle?
Aoe2hd
I've been playing Age of Empires 2 HD on steam and I have about 130 hours on it, and I still suck horribly and find myself panicking when I try to follow tutorials (yet failing horribly at it) and still get outpaced of upwards of 1000 points in my economy and I almost never have an army ready for any sort of rush and resign nearly immediately, so any tips?
After watching a Resonance22 Video he suggests giving them Blast Furnace as a way to patch their too many holes in the tech tree.
What other ideas can be done to improve them?
And maybe also fastest advance times ever? : D
I’m a bit slow right now (at least compared to what I’ve seen), go into Feudal usually around 13, then castle at around 20 but it takes me around 35 to get to imp. Still improving :”)
Hows the ping from SEA region? Mainly from Indonesia, i passed all network diagnostic but still got 500+ ping. Got good ping to google btw.
Editor Question: I would like to Place a torch(convertible) but cannot find it. I know I used it on HD before.
I am confused, pls halp!
As the title said, I cannot join any of the games, nor can my friend that I'm playing with. We both checked our firewall settings already, which were all enabled. Both of us can see the games, but when we join it says that we cannot connect to the games. Can anyone help us please?
my id is ignis_xicor
Do, I bought the game w/ all expansions a few months ago from Amazon. But it seems to be stuck on patch 5.4 iirc. I have seen that 5.7 patch is live right now but i dont know how to update it. Please help. Also, can you play multiplayer on steam using this game as it is a non-steam game? Any help would be appreciated.
I did a similar post on the same date one year back... :-)
Choose your best player from AoC and AoE 2 HD == ONE NAME! [In case there is a different player who is very good with WK civs specifically, mention him too]
I swear to god I keep getting smurfed. A run of games where the oppo is 1550 and steadily attain sub 17min castles, who end up with 1.5 - 2x the points of everyone else before combat and also drop just after they've wiped my team (who rack up on average of 20 kills between two players), before they are "victorious". The nerd rage is real. I had to rant. Thanks
Are there still useful strategies or the only way you can win is to upgrade faster than your enemies?
Also, should I ship it before spice trade or after?
I've heard Too-Tahns, Too-tons, Tee-tahns, and probably all other pronunciations, but have no idea what the correct way to pronounce it is.
New entry into the 2k3 list on RM1v1. I mean the account has over 2100 matches so it's hardly a smurf account but I've just never heard of this player before. Did he have another name or is it just someone who's gotten a lot better?
Battle of the wood bonuses - fight!
Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game.
