Do cards that increase the gather rate of fishing boats affect all boats?

There are a lot of cards that increase the gather rate of fishing boats. I almost never train fishing boats, preferring to train native boats that don't cost pop and can at least somewhat defend themselves.

Do those cards increase the gather rate of all boats that can fish, like canoes, catamarans, and caravels? They'd be a lot more useful if they did.

How to ensure military units come out from the correct side?

Not DE... Playing on HD/Voobly...

I set gather point on one side of the TC... Military units spawn on the other side... This is damn irritating specially when I have walled the other side causing the units to travel the whole opposite side before they can come to my gather point....

Is there any way to ensure they spawn where I want...

Tips for dealing with teaming at each stage of the game in FFA?

I’m a magnet for getting teamed in FFA. Literally each of the last 9 games I’ve played ended in me getting dog-piled by the whole lobby for having the highest score or getting spies first or some nonsense. I almost always avoid attacking anyone all game so as to not start something with another player. I imagine that after a certain amount of players and against certain civs, losing is inevitable because of the pop cap, but I’d love to know if there are good strategies for dealing with just 2 or 3 players teaming you.

My search will not find certain players online.

I play with a group of 7-8 friends pretty regularly. Even before the new update, I am unable to find 2 of my friends in using search in ranked or in the lobby games. Same two guys. Their names do not appear. Some of the guys in the group can see them, some can’t. We even tried setting up a Clan with all of us and I still couldn’t search and find them. When I try to use Clan invites, their invite box is grayed-out even when they are recognized as online. No Steam/Xbox conflict either. We all have same version from MS Store. This creates problems when trying to create a party on ranked. Any thoughts on a fix?

custom game AI resigned as soon as it was losing, can that be changed?

Ive only won one game so far, but when i did i was because the ai resigned as soon as my army reached their doorstep. is that common? and if so can it be changed? its unsatisfying to have them just give up. its like playing an online game where people leave the match constantly. i tried looking it up online but all i got were results for aoe2.

Anyone noticed units getting stuck a lot?

I had a cavalier get caught in a packing trebuchet, an ostrich getting caught in the foot print of a castle, so it couldn't be built, and a ship spawn behind a dock where it was trapped. All today.

Wasn't online, it was scenario play, but quite frustrating.

Beginners build orders to master first?

One day I woke up and decided to be a pro aoe2 gamer. Never knew what was waiting for me so I started researching and watching guide videos.

Now I just want to have fun and learn enough to be able to play fun ranked games.

I realized that I need to memorize build orders so I started with fast castle. The problem is there are hundreds of different builds named fast castle with different orders. In my first research I memorized the standard start; 6 on sheep, 4 on wood, next to boar, 4 on berry etc. some fast castle build start this way and for example one build sends 5 on berry instead of 4. I got lost a bit and I need your help to get a solid beginner build orders to memorize.

I really suck at units too. Never know what unit to go with. With fast castle I guess the main unit is knight but am I gonna need other units and what are they need to be.

Open for any help and information :)

Steam patch

I went to play AoM today in steam and downloaded the new patch. There were no active games and had to go back to original game before the patch to play multiplayer. Is this normal? Or do people play on the new beta patch and it takes time?

Question about the way pros harvest animals

So occasionally I watch youtube videos of pro players and they do something with animals that I do not understand. So as far as I know, animal food(sheep, lama, turkey etc) naturally decay over time and the best way to minimize decay is to put many vills on the animal to harvest it quickly. So I usually kill only one animal at a time and then put 6 vills or so on it, moving on to the next animal once it's fully harvested. But I've seen high level players put 3 vils on a sheep, and 3 on another sheep..and I don't understand why they'd want to do this? They do the same thing with boars too, like putting 5 vils on a boar and 4 vils on a sheep etc.

Leavers in ranked

I wanted to bring something that maybe has been brought before. The leavers in ranked game. Lately i've lost more game than ever because 1 game out of 2 ~ 4 someone in my team just leave... Out of nowhere. Is it coming from those crash that many ppl have (even i had some) ? The game just crash and go back to windows screen, w.o even giving a error message... I gotta say losing elo becasue they can't fix bugs is kinda anooying...

And even if it's not in my team, I'm playin ranked to play fair, not on some 3v2 or 4v3 game that either will be instant win because their team surrend, or because we out number them...

(WIP) How To Counter: A web site to see information on how to counter land units in AoE2: DE!

Hello everyone!

I want to share a tool I'm working on:

As you can see, it is a site that holds information on every land unit in AoE2, with the intention of showing which units you should use to counter them, and which units they counter.

It is very incomplete - only the first few units (Skirms and the Archer line) in the list have information filled in, and for that reason I'd like to ask for help with filling all of the units' information.

A lot of counters are situational and depend on many things, but I'd like the site to be a more general view of what you should use against a particular unit. If you'd like to help out with directly filling in information, send me a message to my inbox.

Opinions on The Art of War build order?

I used to do a certain FC build order from ZeroEmpires, but the one shown in the tutorials seems quite different. Do you guys have any opinions on it? Do you guys think I should switch to it?

For context, here's the build order I currently use: -6 sheep -4 wood -1 boar -4 bushes -1 boar -3 sheep -Once boars are depleted, send 4 to deer, the rest to sheep -4 wood -Once sheep are done, build 6 farms -3 gold -click feudal -2 wood I advance to castle with blacksmith, barracks and a stable. My best time is about 15:30.

State of the community?

I really want to play the game again after trying it a few times as a kid. Thing is, coming back to gaming, I've seen a notable quantity of just awful people in games with a ranked mode which is a huge turn off for my interest. Can we not turn this community into just complaining about the game?

Hey all! First of all, just wanted to say that I get all the frustration with many of the bugs that have been in the game, especially the really blatant ones like the Malay 166% advance. I also get the frustration with the fact that it took a month of waiting for a new patch instead of issuing a hotfix.

That being said, I see more and more content of this sub being dedicated to being frustrated with the game and complaining about it. There are plenty of video game communities that spend so much of their time complaining about the game that they claim to love and I don't want to see that happen here. The community is one of the best things about this game!

I will also add that developing a new thing on top of old legacy software is often difficult. The game is pretty old - building a new game with the existing software has to be tough. There are going to be hiccups. I am a developer as well, and I know the pain of telling someone you are addressing an issue, only to discover several other issues that cause delays. Then you have to explain why it isn't done yet.

Again, a bunch of the issues are super annoying. In the case of cheaters, they are game breaking. But the AOE playerbase is growing and for 20 bucks we got a modern version of the game we all love and it gets tons of attention from the studio who created it, even if they aren't perfect. I just hope we keep the positive energy around here.

Thoughts? If you feel I am off base definitely tell me.

Instant leavers affect ELO if you leave?

I had 2 leavers on a 4v4 as soon as the game started, the third guy on my team also resigned so I did too.

ELO was affected by -7 even though we resigned almost instantly. How come?

Good ways to find civ's best age?

Hello all!

I was wondering, in general, what's the best way to tell when a civ will be at a strong point?

So for example, some may say that the Mongols are strong around late castle/early imperial. What gives it away? How can someone tell that Mongols peak at that time; is it simply a feeling thing?

my take on Bog Islands meta

Saracens with fast feudal, mass some galleys, market abuse, very low food eco idling TC to get a ton of galleys. If you win water you basically won since you now have feudal cavalry archers. Make more fishing ships, Age up with some market abuse and get galleys, spread eco while continuing pressure, then go imp cannon galleons and gg.

Client crashes as soon as the queue timer ends.

Ever since the last update, I have not been able to play ranked 4v4s with my friends. As soon as the queue time ends, 00:00:00, the cursor starts the spinning blue "not responding" cursor and the screen gets the program crashed white overlay.

Has anyone else had this issue since the latest update, if so, have you found a solution. Thanks in advance.

Wars of Liberty Help: Can't find other civilizations.

Hello there!

Two days ago, I downloaded and installed WoL. The first day, it ran fine and I created two new Home Cities: Bogotá (Colombians) and St. Louis (USA).

I played like 3 matches the first day, and I fought against the Egyptians, the Swedes, the Mexicans and other civilizations.

Now, when I started playing today, I realized after two matches that I was only facing opponents of the vanilla version of Asian Dynasties (Spanish, British, Japanese, Ottomans, etc.), not any of the new ones.

I tried to see what happened and I also realized that I couldn't create new cities with any of the new civs: it's like any trace of them dissapeared in my game.

TL; DR: I can still play the new maps and stuff, but I can't fight with or against the new civilizations.

Has this ever happened to any of you? How can I fix it?

A little unsure about the best way to use my military forces (brand new player with some noob questions)

So I've learned that I should be cranking out villagers. I now have a shitload of resources. Once I'm at this point do I just start sending waves of units at my enemy (while maybe keeping some back for defensive purposes?

Or is there a better way to do it?

I ask because the nonstop villager production and economy focus was counter-intuitive to me. I've been playing on easy/standard so obviously I can get away with not playing optimally, but prior to this I was just creating like, 15ish villagers and spreading them evenly across the resources. I had no problem crushing the puny AI armies this way, especially if I rushed them early and stunted their growth.

Now like i said I have plenty of resources (but I do end up with a bunch of idle villagers at times, especially when stone/gold spots run dry).

I also noticed that the AI spreads out quite a bit. Usually my first targets are the freaking buildings they throw up right outside my walls. I've been turtling and walling myself in...bad idea? Should I be more aggressive with my base building?

What do you guys think of an option to restart within a three minute period?

As a replacement for the grace period, what if each player was given one chance to restart a ranked game within three minutes? They still have to play the same map and civ, but it gives each player a chance to get a feel for their area and decide if they'd like to try for another start.

With people complaining about bad maps, I feel this is a good compromise. What do you think?

Is there a way to edit the god powers to longer time?

For example, that power that stops buildings from producing units, it only lasts 40 seconds. I can use that cheat that I can repeatedly use it, but i wonder if there is some code I can use to make it last like 2 or 3 minutes?

Historically which AoE2 civ was the most moral/righteous in general

None of the medieval civs were spotless with war, plunder and slavery being the norm. But it general what case can you make for the nicest civ?

I know there are differences with different time periods and different rulers but in general

For example

The Goths did a very "restrained" sack of Rome in the 400s. With the population largely left alive and limited damage to buildings.

Slavery was abolished in England in the 1000s. Though serfdom was present.

The Celts might have treated their slaves better with opportunities for rising in the social ranks

Saracen slave warrior mameluks being a respected class and also ruling at one point after a rebellion i think. Not to sure on that one.

I want to choose my main civ on whos the nicest. I like the mesos in game but I cant reconcile them with what I know about them irl. For exampme the 'garland wars' tech always rubbed me the wrong way knowing they were off to get slaves to be mutialated and killed in sacrifices.

Same with the Spanish. Was maining them but could never look at the conqs the same way when i read about their atrocities. Or even the Spanish and Germand atrocities in the 1527 sacking of Rome

Question about research count.

Everytime I play my research count is 16. But the people with higher score has like a 50 something.

Am I missing something? I do upgrades on mill, lumberjack, mining, trade carts. Should I do more upgrades on blacksmith and university? Or something else.

Chat Filter Causes enmity on Twitch | Opponent thinks he's being trolled

Apparently typing asteriskblue gets you censored. You can say blue to your team, any member of the game if you go through the comms panel, but if you type "* blue" it is censored.

During the game, blue, who made several counter towers as I as teutons trushed -- said "??????" . I think he was confused why i had ten vils in my towers or why it was so effective. Instead, blue thinks I'm trolling/flaming him -- to the point he showed up in my twitch chat after the game and challenged me to a 1v1 game lol.

I was raging trying to figure out wtf was being censored.

And before someone asks -- I was so tilted about this I tried to make an account to post this "bug," or feature on DE's forums, but apparently for twenty minutes my account has been "awaiting validation." so all I can do is share it here lol.

New patch crashing

Since the new patch is unplayable, getting weird bugs and unexpected crashes, I request the devs to RELEASE THE MARCH PATCH UPDATE AS A HOTFIX with the Civilization changes of the two recent patches (these changes are easy to implement and generally do not produce bugs; I do nor expect a bug by reducing gold cost of Zealoutry).

Aoe 2 Definitive edition tech support

Hey friends, I'm an Aoe 2 casual gamer that frequently plays big 3v3 and 4v4 battles with friends. Recently we all bought DE and tried to migrate over for a match, but as soon as the match starts, within the first few seconds, the hosts disconnects. We attempted playing on US east and west, with the same result. This happened on 2 different occasions, every time we tried, with 3 different players trying as hosts. Does anyone have any advice on how we could fix this, or is there any additional information i could provide which could be helpful?

that as you can see has an unnatural climbing in the leaderboard. My guess is that he is a cheater, but I'm not sure.

By the way if you check his previous games, he also played against many streamers, for example MBL, DAUT, HERA, etc.

For example I have checked the 7-hours stream of MBL of yesterday, trying to find this guy as the enemy, but couldn't find it. Of course I won't watch 7 hours of gameplay so I may miss the game, even if I try to skip as less as possible the stream.

Now I'm going to check the others, but I would appreciate your help to stop me from looking around blindly like that (maybe someone watched the streams and they remember the game, etc), just for the curiosity to see if this is a cheater for real or not.

It's not that important, it's just a personal curiosity now.

Can someone from the dev team tell me why we can't just have all of the maps in the ranked RM map pool and we let the players decide what they want to play?

Also let me choose what maps I want in my map pool. Some people will have a harder time playing on certain maps but the best maps will always have available players to match with. Why are we letting you choose for us, especially when you choose wrong so much of the time.

Edit: I see that it would exponentially increase queue times, thanks for the explanation. I still wouldn't mind if they got more input from players when choosing maps for the map pool.

May-Hem Event: Now giving advantages to players who complete events! Important! This cannot happen!

The final reward: -For the remainder of this event, your sheep are able to auto-scout and have increased vision.

Yes that now means that once you complete this event you will have superior dark age vs other players with out it when it comes to early scouting.

This is not what I want in my events. Maybe I'm overreacting. I feel like this is the road to microtransactions, lootboxes and season passes.

Devs please. Leave the sheep's LOS alone. They see enough in their short lives.

Do extra gold piles on Arena consistently spawn behind certain player bases? I’ve noticed a few games, either I or my opponent (skill nonwithstanding), where one player gets hosed with extra gold placement.

Stonemasons versus Battlefield Construction

Two civs get a card, 'Battlefield Construction', which you will occasionally see included in their decks, as it permits their musketeers to construct specific buildings (barracks, stables, and outposts for Ottoman, barracks, caravanserai, and castles for India).

If you assume that the time your military spends building these structures to be of no cost, then the question becomes, how many of these structures would you need to build before the value generated would compare favorably to, say, a 600 wood crate?

That crate is worth 1,125 seconds of villager time. (1200 seconds for the wood minus 75 seconds to unpack the crate).

Barracks/Stables/Caravanserai/Foundry: 30 second build time Castle: 60 second build time

So, in order for Battlefield Construction to pay off, you'd need to build 37.5 barracks/stables/caravanserai/foundries, or 18.75 castles. My point being, in a regular supremacy game, crates, even mediocre ones, handily outperform the Battlefield Construction card. But let's suppose you're playing a looong game, and you think over that time you might build that much. This is where the comparison to Stonemasons is invited. Rather than saving 100% of the build time for these specific structures, you'd save 65% of the build time for all structures, including walls and town centers. Anyone with a passing familiarity with FFA or Treaty matches knows that tons of wall building goes on, along with plenty of mills, plantations, town centers, etc. Plus, these buildings will go up faster, which can be critical, such as when you're trying to repair defenses after they've been breached.

Advice vs. Meso Civs

I'm a pretty new player, ~1300 DE ELO after a few months. Looking for some advice to help reorient the way I'm thinking about match-ups vs. Meso civs, particularly Aztecs and Mayans.

In almost every game I play, I either win or it's obvious to me why I lost -- didn't understand my opponent's strategy, too slow to eco up, wrong choice of unit composition. These are easy to learn from and fix. But against Aztecs and Mayans it feels like I play well and then get totally rolled every time, which is especially weird since the two of them ostensibly are so different, and yet it all feels the same to me. For this reason I suspect there's something very wrong in the way I'm thinking about playing against these civs.

Note that I exclusively play Persians (for now, picked one versatile civ to focus on while I'm learning). I realize that this immediately changes the conversation, since it's the only civ without access to Two-Handed Swordsman, but I assume the answer can't just be "yeah Persians should always lose to Aztecs/Mayans".

I could post replays, but I don't want to get bogged down in the individual games. What I'm looking for is generalizations. What's a reasonable game-plan? Here are some specific questions to illustrate my confusion. Feel free to comment on any, all, or none of them.

  • Against Mayans, of course I expect archers. However, their archers are so strong that if I just try to defend with skirms or knights I always get overwhelmed. Recently I've been mixing in onagers, which tends to push them back -- until they switch into eagles a few minutes later, and then I'm helpless.

  • Against Aztecs, I know they're supposed to have a weak post-Imp, so I usually try to just hold off until then. However, Aztec players invariably put on heavy Castle Age pressure. I can never seem to get the balance right between building enough of an army to defend successfully in Castle, and booming enough to not find myself at an irretrievable disadvantage in early Imp. I never have this problem against other civs that often go for castle age pressure like Mongols or Spanish...

  • Neither civ ever feels vulnerable to me. They're both above-average in Feudal Age. In Castle Age, Mayans either go for obsidian arrows crossbows (which usually has to be dealt with with an equally large number of skirms; easy to get caught off-guard once with too small an army and then the game is over even if you walled) or more often, plumes, which never have to take a bad fight except against cavalry, and in numbers are too strong against knights (even with Persian knight bonus vs. archers) for that to be relevant. Aztecs in Castle Age have eagle warriors, which are countered by only exactly knights (again, playing Persians; going Militia-line not a real option), which is not great against the civ with the best monks in the game.

  • In spite of these strengths, attempts to out-boom these civs invariably meet with disaster. Presumably my opponents know I can't touch them and just go crazy on eco while I'm forced to build military in case the go on the offensive, but can't go offensive with it myself. By early Imp, the game is over. I know hand cannon is supposed to be a strong counter to Eagles, but it's too late by then.

I expect to be called an idiot -- hopefully I really am just overlooking something or thinking about something very wrong. Please, if you know what it is, tell me!

How do you add what's queued up to the UI overlay?

I see players on streams where you can see counts of villagers / units queued up in the upper lefthand of the UI and I want to know how to enable it. I tried to check in the settings but nothing in there seemed to do it. Is there just a hotkey button or something?

Quite stuck after my scout rush !

Hi there, I play Franks, I LOVE scouting. My BO is quite ok until I start production of my scouts. On open map I add archers while my scout are rushing to block any pikemen. So until then it's fine.

BUT, then everything falls off if the ennemy can block my rush. If it's a close map I'm always sure of loosing !

I specifically have hard time when my opponent get fews trebuchets and start attacking. Ussually I loose my cavs on pikemen without reaching trebuchets !

What can I improve ?

I'm around 900ELO :)

Genbows vs Mangudai lets go!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Goths vs Khmer, and next up is the Italians vs Mongols!

Italians: Archer and Naval civilization

  • Advancing to the next Age costs -15%
  • Dock techs cost -50%
  • Fishing Ships cost -15%
  • Gunpowder units cost -20%
  • TEAM BONUS: Condottiero available at Barracks in Imperial Age
  • Unique Unit: Genoese Crossbowman (Anti-cavalry foot archer)
  • Unique Unit: Condottiero (Fast, weak, anti-gunpowder infantry)
  • Castle Age Unique Tech: Pavise (Archer-line and Genbows get +1/+1 armor)
  • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Silk Road (Trade units cost -50%)

Mongols: Cavalry Archer civilization

  • Cavalry archers fire +20% faster
  • Light Cavalry, Hussars, and Steppe Lancers +30% hp
  • Hunters work +40% faster
  • TEAM BONUS: Scout-line +2 LoS
  • Unique Unit: Mangudai (Something about not having counters)
  • Castle Age Unique Tech: Nomads (Destroyed houses do not decrease maximum population)
  • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Drill (Siege Workshop units move +50% faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

  • Alrighty - so for your 1v1 open maps, Mongols would ostensibly be favored, what with their better Age-up bonus and all. However, provided the Italian player does not fall behind in Feudal Age, they should be fairly well set up for the rest of the game. Neither civ has much of an eco bonus mid-game, and Genbows take about as long to get up and running as Mangudai. Do you think Italians stand a chance here?
  • On water maps, this is an interesting one. You may think it should just be Italians 100%, but on the most aggressive water maps, where uptimes are the most important, Mongols are still seen as frequent picks. On hyper-aggressive water maps like Golden Swamp, Baltic/Medi, etc., which civ would you rather have?
  • In team games, these two civs would seem rather different. Italians are a pretty standard good, but not quite top-tier, flank civ with FU Arbs, Monks, BBTs, BBCs, etc. Mongols, meanwhile, fill neither the flank or pocket role super comfortably, as the meta these days is all about straight archer and cavalry units. In BoA2, Mongols are most commonly seen as flank. What do you think about these two civs in that role?
