Is space 'cold'

Consider deep space or a perfect vacuum. If I were to put my hand outside of my spacesuit what would the sensation feel like? The only heat loss would be due to the heat radiating away from my skin. There are no slow particles to collide with my skin and rob my skin's kinetic energy. Disregarding pressure and strictly regarding temperature, would this really feel 'cold'?

[Question][Theory]Comparison of measurement of time in Classical and Special Relativistic Mechanics. Part 1.

I'm having some trouble understanding the construction of reference frames and measurement of time in above two topics. Here it goes:

In Classical Mechanics, an observer A constructs his/her frame by picking up a coordinate system (usually, a 3D Cartesian grid for our assumed 3D world) and a clock. The clock and observer are at rest w.r.t observer's frame. An event "e" is described by observer as happening at (x,y,z)eA and at time (t)eA. Another observer B could be, w.r.t A, moving with constant velocity/acceleration/rotating and so his/her frame. B measures an event "f" at (x,y,z)fB and (t)fB. Here we say that clocks in all frames are synchronized,i.e., reading same time at any instant.

Question: Observer A records event "e" happening at (x,y,z)eA & (t)eA; as A's clock reads (t)eA, B's clock also reads (t)eA (due to our absolute time assumption). But this is not sufficient to say that (t)eB (time at which event "e" occurs acc. to B) also equals what B's clock read at that time, i.e., (t)eA; at some (x,y,z)eB. I mean to say, just by saying that time is synchronized in all frames, we can't say an event which occurred at time t in one frame, also occurred at time t in another frame or can we?

Thank you.

One of the predictions generated by the mathematical universe hypothesis is that our universe is maximally general structure, subject to anthropic constraints. Are there any obvious counterexamples?

Mathematical universe hypothesis. So, for example, it seems like Tegmark's MUH should predict a varying fine structure constant, so long as it doesn't vary so much that it would interfere with the existence of life. It predicts this varying constant because a mathematical universe where this dimensionless constant varies is a more 'general' mathematical structure, and hence more typical, than one with a fixed fine structure constant. Are there any examples of how the universe could have been more structurally complex, but in fact is not, and hence could have been more 'general', in a way that wouldn't obviously interfere with the existence of life?

Can you project a consciousness through Quantam entanglement given you have the right technology?

If we are made up of electromagnetic signals in the brain and quantum entanglement can theoretically control every atom in the brain is it possible that we can project another consciousness in another location of the universe given we have some fantasy technology or magic? Yolo?

Question about high level physics courses in college

I’m a senior in high school and am planning on studying a lot of physics in college. I’m pretty sure some sort of research is what I want to do with my life because I have always had a strong love for science and especially physics. I’m just wondering how difficult it is to make it through all the high level physics courses (and other science courses) in college that I would need to take in order to do great research which focuses on the big picture in science.

Cosmos hurts my brain

Ok so can anyone point me in the right direction maybe? I'm a real amateur with science and physics but I have a question

Is the speed of light constant and finite? If so, then when what happens when light fails to exit a black hole? If the light cannot escape the pull of gravity doesn't that mean that the light waves need to be eventually slowed down and then stopped? Or does the trajectory of the light get warped and it circles it like a drain before spinning infinitely around the centre of the event horizon? Go easy on me I didn't do science past year 10 :/

How fast would two trains travelling in opposite parallel directions (3 metres apart from each track) travelling towards a person (6 feet tall weighing 120lbs with no body fat) in the middle of where the trains would meet that would produce enough wind force to rip the victim's skin off and kill it?

Weird question, I know... I'm curious how you would tackle this problem given the density of human skin and what happens when a human is in the middle of two train tracks with trains (weighing 5,400 tonnes) travelling in opposite directions that eventually meet up at the exact speed to kill the victim.

Gravity: Imbalance?

So I know gravity is an imbalance mass-energy (I think?)... that causes a distortion in space-time. Can someone explain this to me intuitively?

As in, I cannot see what this "imbalance" is. If an object moves, why does space-time warp?

Enemy Archipelago: best water map ever?

Both games I saw on the map (VNS vs. grassDaut and Nervo vs. grassDaut) were absolutely awesome.

Here's what it looks like if you missed the games, players spawn in 1v1 situations on 4 islands: http://ift.tt/2x3TvFL

I've never seen so many landings, water fights, trushes, fast castles, and almost-defeated-players in one map before. It's still a teamgame clearly, but with a lot of added 1v1 elements and unit variety, completely different than Arabia and Islands.

I'd love to see this one as a staple of future 4v4 tournaments.

What do you guys think about the map?

Conservation of Angular Momentum

The other day in class we did the experiment where you stand on a turntable and hold the moving bicycle wheel and see that rotating it this or that way it causes you turn in the direction it is rotating. That made me wonder..

What would happen if, rather than holding a rotating bicycle wheel in front of you, you held it above your head? It's not like you could take off like a helicopter but the momentum has to go somewhere, so how would it make you move?

Heavyweights Go-Kart Physics

Was watching the movie Heavyweights the other day and when they are at the Go-Kart race of the Apache Relay the kid pulls a lever and the go-kart takes off with enough speed to ramp over the go-kart in front of him. I was wondering how much acceleration would be needed to actually accomplish this.

We know the kid weighted 141lbs and the go-kart is of average size.

Custom God Selection

So here's how it works. You can pick any Major God you want as usual, and it will determine what Civilization you'll be playing as, meaning if you pick Hades, you will have Vault of Erebus as your first available myth tech, you can train villagers who gather Favor by praying at the Temple, you can only build Greek buildings, train Greek soldiers etc. But when you advance to the Classical Age, you can pick any Classical Age minor god of any civilization. Same thing with Heroic and Mythic (you're free to pick gods that are all from the same civilization as your major god if you want). So you will have access to these minor Gods' God Powers, Myth Units but also their Myth Techs. But here's what you have to be careful: if you're worshiping Hades and you worship Anubis in the Classical Age, you will have access to Serpent Spear but it will be useless because you cannot train Spearmen. So I ask, what would be your ultimate god selection?

Hello, fellas!

Any new about the DE of AoE II? What do we know so far? Any estimated release date (2017, 2018, etc.)?

I'm more hyped for AoE II: DE than AoE IV, to be honest. Because let's face it, we know for sure it's going to be great since it's the improved version of AoE II.

Struggling to pick astrophysics project for MSc Physics course

Hi all, I've just started my MSc Physics and I'm specialising in astrophysics, the modules I have picked cover 90% of astrophysics. I'm really stuck on what kind of area I should look into. I need to propose some research with professors soon, but everything looks good. I am interested in all of it.

I want to get involved in a project with a good base for PhD projects as well as something meaningful to the scientific community.

Projects range from planetary dynamics with numerical modelling to theoretical projects about inflationary cosmology. I'm not a great programmer so I will have to learn coding whilst I study.

Can anyone recommend some areas of astrophysics I can look into?

Anyone else ever find it funny 1700- players on HD make rooms looking for a 1 Vs 3 against 1600 and under?

I noticed this quite often and one of two outcomes always occur,.

  1. The 3 other players are super noobs and do a 25 minute castle age and get destroyed

  2. The 3 other players know the game to a decent extent and absolutely destroy the other 1 with triple knights or feudal aggression

Just find it funny that instead of working to improve there game they want to take on silly challenges, saying this because I've noticed the players that do these 1 Vs 3 challenges frequently try them.

Playing Age of Mythology on Mac Using PlayOnMac - Problem Help

Hey, guys.

I'm on a 27"imac. I downloaded the Steam using PlayOnMac and was able to play Age of Empires 2.

Then I bought Age of Mythology, when I try to open the game, same way I was opening the AoE, the game doesn't load any image on the screen. It enter in the game, however with a black screen and the mouse and the music works, however no image in the screen.

Anyone can help me find a solution? Already research in many forums however didn't find any solution in the last 4 hours.

Appreciate your time helping me. Thanks for your attention,

Does more inertia make a projectile travel farther?

Does more inertia mean that a projectile will travel farther? For example, if I have two nerf darts, one with more mass, would the one with more mass travel farther because it would have more inertia? or does it not travel as far because the gravitational potential energy is greater? What I thought was that because the amount of force applied to the dart by the nerf gun is the same, the heavier one would travel less far because there is more gravitational potential energy even though they had the same initial applied force. Please clarify this for me!

Like don't you have anything better to do other than annoy the fuck out of players that are lower rated than you? If you're playing vs someone of a lower ELO then at least make it a fun game for them somehow. Getting stomped, and worse, getting stomped by mass towers, is not fun at all. So how about siege UUs

These would be powerful siege units created in castles that would replace the trebuchet and maybe even the siege workshop. I'm talking mega-rams that can hold 20 units. Maybe a bombard that can fire into fog of war.

I remember in AoE 3, there was a campaign mission where you took control of a giant (GIANT), but fixed howitzer. It was so much fun blasting away buildings with it. I wonder if something like that could be balanced to make it viable for use, but also vulnerable enough to not be OP.

...and as a side not, what I'm not talking about is the organ gun lol.

I went as huns to avoid ever getting housed and I think my best plan is to boom real hard up to 8-10 TC's, with 100-150 vils and spam trash as hard as I can before finally sweeping in with Trebs and Pals to finish things off. Any suggestions?

Civ Discussion: Vietnamese

Hello, Reddit! Once again, we're here with Civ discussion Friday! Last week, we talked about the Goths, so if want to visit that or want to look at previous discussions, I'll have them linked below! But, for today the discussion belongs to our skirm kings, the Vietnamese! Feel free to ask the community questions, answer any posted questions, make jokes, talk about your experiences, make suggestions, etc... anything Vietnamese-related! Hopefully you stick around too for next week, where we discuss the Persians.

•Rattan Archer (UU: Foot archer with high pierce armor.)

What is the main benefit of making Rattan Archers rather than Crossbows/Arbalests? How do you use and when do you make Rattan Archers?

•Imperial Skirmisher (UU/Team Bonus: Upgrade from the Elite Skirmisher.)

With +1 attack, +0/1 armor, and +1 bonus damage vs archers & cavalry archers compared to the Elite Skirmisher, how significant/powerful are the addition stats? Why would you make skirms as opposed to other archer units when you're the Vietnamese?

•Chatras (Castle UT: Battle Elephants gain +30 HP.)

How significant is the extra 30HP (or 50HP with Bloodlines) when Battle Elephants already have base 250HP (300HP elite)? Is it Chatras worth researching: when? How powerful are Vietnamese Battle Elephants with the HP dispite packing Husbandry and Blast Furnace?

•Paper Money (Imperial UT: You and your allies gain 500 gold one time.)

Costing 200 gold and 800 food, how good/useful is this tech in team games and in 1v1? When would you research Paper Money for the extra gold?

(Team Bonus:) Gain access to the Imperial Skirmisher upgrade.

Other than the Turks, who benefits the most for having an Imperial Skirmisher/who has the best skirms? How useful are Imperial Skirmishers in the late game/trash wars?

Civ Bonuses

•Reveal the positions of any enemy TC.

•Archers gain 10% more HP in the Feudal Age, 15% more HP in the Castle Age, and 20% more HP in the Imperial Age.

•Conscription is researched for free.

How powerful is knowing where enemy TC placement is/how good is it for scouting? Just how much does the extra HP on the archers affect them since their HP is low to begin with? Is the free Conscription good or important?

Where can I buy pure materials?

I want to study Physics and Chemistry, but I'd like to be able to apply what I learn as well.

I want to make things, by understanding what things are.

The issue is finding pure forms of the elements. For example, I'd like to work with Silicon or Copper or Hydrogen, but I'm not sure where to get them.

I know I could find them around (like Silicon in circuit boards or Hydrogen in the air), but I'd rather just purchase already separated units.

Where can I get pure materials?

Rank beginner - where to find opponents?

I am somewhat of a lifelong noob of the AOE series, have always enjoyed the game but never put in the time to get decent online. I just started playing AOE3 again - I originally got it around launch time and played 10-20 games online but my comp couldn't really handle it. I know the basic principles of play and I enjoy watching commentaries so I decided to dive into competitive play last night.

I launched TAD through steam and went to ESO online but there were only like 15 games in the lobby. I started my own "1v1 noob" game which was joined by someone much higher level but probably a noob by most standards. He accused me of smurfing, which I had to look up afterwards, then ridiculed me for being terrible after I blundered away my army. I quickly resigned in shame.

Anyway, is there a better way to play online to find people at my level? Or is it just hard to get into a game that's been out this long?

I know its an old topic, but something has to be done on the condos

Have you guys watched the 4v4 UP1.5 grand final yesterday? If not, just go and watch cause its amazing and I want to say something about one of the game so if you don't want to get spoiled, stop reading and go watch it.

In one game I think its called 'enemy islands' where basically all ppl start with playing 1v1 on their own islands. AND there are so many condos in the game! Half of the players went for condos, and none of them were the Italian.

And the thing that triggers me the most is that: even MAYANS are going for condos. Despite having the option of going elite eagle warrior, which is one of the best unit in early imperial game, they still opt for condotierros, which really speaks something for this unit: the whole "no upgrade requirement" thing creates a super-duper enormous power spike for anyone who gets into imperial age. So strong that it wipes out the diversity of the game: as long as the Italian is in the team, we are not going to see champions, eagle warriors, woad raiders, berserks (well we saw berserks in that game, but he should really went for condos instead, especially when he also needs to control the water), and other infantry units.

Now, I don't mean they are really a bad unit: It is great to see the condos being used other than the Italians, otherwise it makes no sense for it to be a Team bonus. However, I think this unit is not in the position they were supposed to be: an anti-gunpowder infantry. Right now they serves more like a eagle warrior in game but with stats of a champion for everyone, as well as being a good unit to land on water map (though I'm perfectly fine with the latter: if you can land its basically GG anyway). Considering gunpowder units don't come right in the early imperial, it just makes no sense to have such a unit being available so early in the game (and basically nullifying the turks, but that's a story for another time)

There are actually plenty of solution suggested already, but I still wanna suggest possible changes here (Note that these changes are not supposed to be done simultaneously: just some ideas to throw out here):

1) All civs apart from Italians need to research for condotierros. The research cost could be a bit cheaper and faster than upgrading the whole champion line, but definitely leave Eagles as a more favourable option in early imperial age for the meso-civs. Considering Condotierro is a mercenary unit, I really hope their allies need to buy the units from the Italian player so to make this historical.

2) Statistics-wise, the unit could have 1 or 2 less melee attack, but deal more bonus damage to the gunpowder units. The hp, armour and speed was kinda necessary for the unit to be anti-gunpowder, so it is the best we can do.

3) Make champions a decent counter to them. Right now Champion is cost-effective against condos, but not only do they need a whole lot more time and money to upgrade, but they aren't beating the condos pop-wise either. Maybe give the condos 2 to 3 eagle armour so champions can still melt them?

4) Nerf Italian as a whole to make them less likely to appear in team game. I personally don't like this change, at least not to make them less likely to appear in team game, cause they were designed to be played in team game with their team-units and imp tech "silk road". But right now it's quite clear that they are strong in too many situations.

MIT OCW 8.05 Quantum Physics II Handouts

Hi,

I stumbled upon this apparently "old" MIT Quantum Physics course under this link and it did contain good handouts like this Two State Systems or Hydrogen Atom System Algebraic Method Resolution. But it seems that the course home page offers no direct access to the handouts. Does any one know how to access the complete list of them ?

PS: the handouts mentioned above are available thanks to google search.

Best Regards.

You know when you're like 100 food from feudal/castle/etc so you garrison vils only to be short by x amount? Well this would be a nice change to make in DE.

Stupid question (1 v 1 arabia)

I go 22 pop flush, 2 ranges make half a dozen archers, send over to opponents base.

My opponent goes for naked fast castle.

By the time my archers reach his base he's very close to clicking up. I chase a few vills around for a couple of minutes, maybe get a 3/4 kills.

He then gets castle, makes 4 knights, cleans my archers and sends knights to my base, which I can't deal with yet.

What am I missing? Is an archer rush not a correct response to a fast castle?

Is there any way to search for 1v1s between two specific players on aoczone/voobly?

When I use the aoczone advanced search and put in for example "viper, daut" and limit it to 1v1s, it brings up every 1v1 that either of those players have been in, as opposed to all the 1v1s that both players are in. Is there any way to search for "viper vs daut"?

What is your strategy to defeat the Hard/Hardest Resonance Bot 5.1c on an open map?

I can beat the regular hard HD AI without much of a problem, but the Resonance Bot still manages to be a notch better than me.

My basic strategy against the regular AI was either just a knight rush or a Feudal rush with archers and spears. It typically can't fight back for long and even if it has a feudal army, I can usually just overpower it with onagers in castle age.

However the Resonance Bot has it's towers and is typically much faster at making military than the HD AI on hard. It tends to use a lot more onagers and other siege than the regular AI as well, so it is difficult to win an extended fight.

I've been looking for some videos or guides, but it seems like there aren't a whole lot of people playing against the Resonance Bot.

Why do AoE2 elitists hate our guts and hope we die in a garbage fire?

so, I was unfortnately on the AoE4 subreddit the other day, and I saw this post that was about how age of empires 4 should include the formations from aoe2. I personally found this very offensive, especially when someone critizised aoe3 for not having these. And then to make it worse, on the AoE2 subreddit I saw a post by one of the moderators there who was asking if age of empries 3 players would ruin AoE4 because of our "awful card system". I mean, i know that those age of empries 2 noobs who only know how to play a game if they can put up seven layers of walls on a forest map don't like how aoe3 randomly assigns cards to players who take the time to download the best home city, but I mean common? Calling us stupid because of that? gosh! I think that the problem with AoE2 players is that they are enjoying their 90s game even though in reality our game is better. For example, our game was made in the 2000s, their's in the 1990s. Just like how League of legends was made in the 2000s, so the AoE2 players need to stop trying to make AoE4 not a moba because in the 21st century mobas are the way to go. Another example how Aoe3 is better is that you can only make a certain amount ships so that water battles are now fair. Also, AoE3 is better because you can only make a certain amount of buildings which in turn rewards players who haven't been playing as exansionistic as better players, therefore making our game way more fair than theirs. I think that the real problem with aoe2 is that it put the graphics as a lower priority. yeah, i get that it was a 90s game, but hey Goldeneye 007 was a 90s game and it was a good game and it had a 3d engine so i think there's no excuse for Aoe2 not looking as good as aoe3 and I am really upset that those elitists can actually enjoy a game with good gameplay that might not have graphics that are up to snuff. Another thing is how they are so arrogant as to think that age of empries 3 has worse gameplay. I mean, I know that if the graphics were teh same aoe2 would be a better game but I mean comon' guys the 3d grafics impruv the gameplay. Also, I think that those elitsts don't understand how good the randomly unfair card system is. Let me lay it out to you. AoE2 HD players often complain about how many noobs there are in that game. But you see, the card system in aoe3 is unnatractive to noobs (noobs who aren't interested in moba dota games of course) because it is very difficult to understand easily and so the noobs leave because they don't enjoy the game, which is good for us die-hards because it means that even though our community is smaller it is less saturated with noobs which makes it more fun for me. Also, I am a troll and if you post by either agreeing with me or by yelling at my stupidity you sir are so hilariously niave it's hillarious. So, in conclusion I think it's very sad how aoe2 elitists are on the AoE4 subreddit making a post that was about how age of empires 4 should include the formations from aoe2. I personally found this very offensive, especially when someone critizised aoe3 for not having these. How useful is carry capacity.

I used to think the Aztec +5 carry was a huge bonus but now I am not so sure. It doesn't make them actually harvest faster all it really does is means they save a bit of time not walking back to the camp which isn't all that much. Wheelbarrel and Handcart work the same way.

Has anybody quantified exactly how much of a bonus carry capacity is and when to research it/how much of a bonus aztecs get from it?

Also I am aware that they both synergize with farming well because iirc it takes the same amount of time to farm regardless of capacity.

Recommendations on the foundations of statistical physics/thermodynamics

Hi all,

I'm following course on statistical physics for my theoretical physics master right now, and I would like to refresh my knowledge on the foundations of statistical physics and thermodynamics (since that is pretty much considered as known under the participants). I'm interested in literature that strives to be very rigorous, for I do have some knowledge of the basic concepts, but not so much (anymore) of their foundations/definitions/derivations. Do you have any recommendations for literature I can consult for this?

Examples of things I would like to have a more rigorous understanding of are, on the statistical physics side: the definition of the partition function and a derivation of it's relation to entropy, and on the thermodynamical side: the derivation of the entropy function and it's relation to the canoncial, micro-canonical, grand-canonical ensemble (and others). And on a more general note, what grounds there are for connecting both theories (like, why the statistical definition of the entropy should equal the thermodynamical one in the thermodynamic limit).

Thanks in advance!

Applying Quantum superposition in the Bible, Genesis.

When god created adam and eve, he told them not to eat the forbidden fruit in the middle of the forest.

Then god(observer) left the garden and went somewhere else, he left a snek in the garden that could 50/50 convince the woman to eat the fruit or not, therefore breaking the rule. Now adam and eve are stuck in a superposition of eating the forbidden fruit or not.

the end.

Below Absolute Zero

I am by no means a physicist (I'm actually a pharmacy student, so not even close) but I stumbled upon this article today and was confused http://ift.tt/2wX7PQd The article suggests that tempatures lower than absolute zero are obtainable. However wouldn't this mean that the system is essentially losing more energy that it has to offer? Wouldn't this idea be disregarding the first law of thermodynamics that states energy cannot be created or destroyed?

What I hope AOE2:DE's AI is

AOE 3 had their AI's have a personality (If the AI was French they had Napoleon speaking with his French accent and a personality). I hope that AOE2:DE has this kind of feature like AOE 3 had. Currently, AOE2's AI is what 3's is too much of lesser extent (AI would normally go "Attack an enemy now!"). The one problem this had on AOE3 was that the civ the AI was meant that no other AI can be that civ as you wouldn't want 4 Napoleons speaking to you at the same time. So I was thinking to fix this for AOE 2 is that the current random selection for AI's name would have a distinctly different personality from the others. (Names randomly were chosen from Bleda the Hun to Atilla the Hun etc). This could also mean that the AI would have different strategies depending on who their personality was. (If it was Bleda for example, there would be a 70% higher chance that he would betray you in a diplo game)

I hope that AOE2:DE would have this kind of AI system in place for those people who basically only play against an AI.

This might just be too much to hope for as AOE2:DE may very well just be AOE 2 but with better graphics.

Online alternative to this game?

Loving the game so far but I was wondering if there was an online alternative to it. Not something like AoEO but something closer to the AoE2 but instead with long-term outposts that anybody can raid at any time with an open map I can explore. Kinda like Clash of Clans but borderless and you can walk into other's territory freely.

New player getting back into the game in need of advice.

I loved Age of Empires as a kid, along with Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, Empire Earth, and Command & Conquer.

But I always played the same in these games. I was 7-11 when I played these games, so I didn't have but really 1 other person to play some of the games with. So I usually just played against bots on easy, and I would turtle to get the best and coolest units.

So when I started playing strategy and RTS games with humans, I would normally get stomped, or with a stroke of luck win with cheese strats.

I am definitely best with maintaining my economy and base.

I would say I am weakest with fighting and military composition.

I know basic stuff, like pikemen are good at countering mounted units. Siege equipment is for destroying buildings and mobs of enemies. Skirmishers are good against infantry. Musketeers are balanced I think? Ok for both infantry and horses.

But I don't know how best to put it into practice.

My main civs are the Dutch, English, and Spanish.

Any and all advice and tips is welcome!

What's wrong with AoE:DE being released only on the Windows Store?

I've never bought anything on the store, but I can't figure out why so many people would prefer it on Steam instead.

I know 1 reason is because there won't be a Steam Workshop/modding place to download mods.

But could you still get mods on the Nexus?

what bad expierences have you had with the windows store?
