I downloaded some custom maps and put them in the appropriate RM folder but when I click enable custom maps it say there are none. I've been searching all night but cant seem to find a solution. TIA for any suggestions.

Indians Civ NEEDS TO CHANGE!

I understand that AOE 2 is only a game and is not meant to recreate history, I do feel that way too many liberties have been taken with the Indian Civilisation, in a manner that make the Indian Civ feel inauthentic and shallow -- unlike what one may say for Mongols, Franks, Britons, Chinese or Aztecs.

A few notes on Indian History:
1. India is NOT China. While China has been united for most of past 2500 years, Before the British, only the (Islamic) Mughals were able to achieve unity through a tenuous alliance with the (Hindu) Rajputs. And that too for a short while.

  1. India's history rather mirrors that of Europe in its political fragmentation. Traditionally the North and South have never been united (till the British of course). And even in the North, the Kingdoms of Indus Valley Pains have been at odds with the Kingdoms and empires of Gangetic Plains.

  2. India's medieval history (which AOE 2 is meant to represent) exhibits the following:

a) Prior to the onslaught of Islamic invaders (11th century onwards), North India was basically full of Rajput rulers; whereas South was full of Chola kings and other dynasties inspired by them

b) Thereafter, in the North, Delhi Sultanate (Turkic and Afghan invaders) and Rajputs were perenially feuding till 16th century. In the South, there was the creation of the zealously Hindu Vijayanagara Empire - heavily inspired by the Cholas (who had ruled for over 800 years in some form or the other)

c) The Mughals (a "Timurud" Turkic-Mongol dynasty - shared ancestors with a whole lot of Turkish tribes as well) finally made peace largely in North by allying through marriage and other relations with the Rajputs.

Based on the above colourful history of the subcontinent, I feel representing the entire South Asia as "Indians" is simply inauthentic and basically WRONG. Alternatively, I recommend the Indian Civilisation be broken in three parts:

  1. Rajputs - Rajputs have been a feature of North India since 8th century to 18th century AD (which perfectly captures the time period AOE 2 seeks to emulate)
  2. Cholas -- Cholas are the nucleaus of all South Indian civilisations for the past 2000 years. This includes Vijayanagar - which modeled itself after the Cholas.

  3. Timurids -- The Turkic-Mongol dynasty that in India is now referred to as the Mughals. They were part of the Turkic expansion from Central Asia that also led to Ottomans and Safavids.

Ideally the Rajputs and Mughals should have a NEW Indo-Saracenic architecture (with Rajputs having temples and Timurids mosques) And Vijayanagara should be Hindu architecture (like the one currently in AOE 2). However, in the interests of brevity Rajputs may simply have Hindu Architecture and Timurids, the Middle Eastern Architecture.

How Civ bonuses maybe aligned (very hypothetical -- I shall leave it to game designers to really do the rest):

  1. Rajputs - Civ Bonuses on Fortifications and Heavy Cavalry

  2. Cholas - Civ Bonuses on Trade, Naval and Monks

  3. Timurids -- Horse Archers and Heavy Cavalry

Hope something can come off this.

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Incas vs Malay, and next up is the Byzantines vs Vikings!

Byzantines: Bloodlines Defensive civilization

  • Buildings +10/20/30/40% hp per Age
  • Camels, Skirmishers, and Spearmen cost -25%
  • Fire Ships attack +20% faster
  • Town Watch is free
  • Advancing to Imperial Age costs -33%
  • TEAM BONUS: Monks heal +50% faster
  • Unique Unit: Cataphract (Heavy cavalry with attack bonus vs infantry)
  • Castle Age Unique Tech: Greek Fire (Fire Ships +1 range)
  • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Logistica (Cataphracts deal 5 trample damage; gain an additional +6 attack vs infantry)

Vikings: Infantry and Naval civilization

  • Warships cost -15% in Feudal and Castle Age, -20% in Imperial Age
  • Infantry +10/15/20% hp in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
  • Wheelbarrow, Hand Cart free
  • TEAM BONUS: Docks cost -15%
  • Unique Unit: Berserk (Heavy infantry with slow hp regen)
  • Unique Unit: Longboat (Nimble warship that fires multiple arrows at once)
  • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chieftains (Infantry +5 attack vs cavalry)
  • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Berserkergang (Berserks regenerate x2 faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

  • So for 1v1 Arabia, these are two relatively similar civs in terms of strength, but excel in completely different areas. Byzantines have the most open tech tree in the game, excellent defenses, and cheap trash units, whereas Vikings have the best economy bonus in the game, allowing them to better afford whatever strategy they choose. Which is going to have the edge on the most popular map type?
  • On the water, things certainly get interesting. Vikings dominated water maps in AoC, but without Fire Galleys, they can struggle nowadays on aggressive water maps. Meanwhile, Byzantines lack the raw economic power of Vikings, but they have the best Fire Ships in the game, as well as a complete naval tech tree - critically having access to Shipwright in the late game. In what scenarios do you see one civ have the advantage over the other?
  • Both civs are also excellent flank civs in a team game, as both have access to very solid archer -> xbow -> arb/siege ram gameplans. Vikings grant their incredible economy, but do fall off in the late-game, whereas Byzantines are slower to get up and running, but have a cheaper Imp, as well as access to BBTs, BBCs, and excellent Monks. Which would you rather have taking all the damage while you wall and go for a 5 TC boomkappa ?

Titanomachy

would be pretty cool for them to add a mode called Titanomachy (based on the war of the titans greek myth)
- Once a titans dies you can make a new one
- on the temple there is a tec that resets all the god powers you chose. (1000 food 1000 wood 1000 gold 100 favor)
once they are depleted the tec pops up again.
-pop cap increased. you can build 10 house for each additional settlement you have. same goes for towers and fortresses.
- only played on gigantic maps.
-victory conditions : total annihalation.

the only problem i see is probably the engine, wont handle that amount of units running amock. will all the god powers going off.

but gods be damned if that would be fucking epic.

I lost a game because I thought Mongols got Eagle Warriors

I played a random civ game on Arabia and I got the Mongols. I thought nice I will do a quick castle and then move into Eagle Warriors. Even though I was scouting with my Scout(and not an Eagle Scout) it didnt cross my mind. My opponent was Britons so I knew he would go for Archers. He came in with 10 Crossbowmen in late Feudal(I was already in Castle Age). I had resources saved up to spam Eagle warriors from my two barracks. I would have wiped out his archers quickly if it wasnt for the fact that I was Mongols which is not a meso civ. Then it hit me: I am Mongols not Mayans It never crossed my mind.

I build a Market and a Blacksmith in Feudal so I couldnt make any other units. . I spammed militia in pure desperation and upgraded them to longswords. I got utterly destroyed. Oh god I love this Game. 11.

Things I would like to see in Joan Of Arc campaigns in AoE2:DE

Another wave of Beta key invites is close and will introduce Joan Of Arc campaigns this time. First thing I would like to remind everyone is I am not part of AoE2:DE Beta and I can't provide much other details other than official screenshots or other reveals from official sources. Do not consider it as Beta leaks and since I'm not in Beta I won't be breaking any NDA even if my details get accurate. Without further talking this is what I expect: 1. High Pop Cap: I would like to see pop cap around 125-250 or more depending on situation. I'll say 200 is fine for most of the campaigns. I would like to play Joan Of Arc 2nd, 3rd scenario with more pop. 75 pop felt too much low for me. This thing always bugged me that should I make vils or army. 2. Enhanced scenario details: I would like to see more eye candy details in scenario. Also improve other resource balance since campaigns hopefully will feature high pop cap. Among screenshots saw some nice eye candy units. Hoping that they'll be changed. 3. Beginning cutscene: I was already amazed from official screenshot from Facebook/Twitter. Art style felt a bit manga style. Nonetheless liked official art style. I think it'll be polished. 4. Civilization fix: It's already known that there was some serious civilization design and choice errors in campaigns. Also some new civs were introduced later on. I hope that will get toned a bit. I don't think Joan Of Arc campaigns will have this sorta issue.

Is farm refreshing coming back?

It looks like vietnam has already abandoned DE in favor of 1.0 ROR. The game is legitimately worse without farm bug, and given that they are the only community who ever really actively played the game after zone died, I don't see why it wasn't added to DE as a permanent feature.

It's the equivalent of Starcraft Remastered ignoring South Korea or WC3 Reforged ignoring China.

I wonder what the Vietnamese community has to say about DE in general. It looked like in the DE tournaments they just tool rushed every single game. Which isn't what happens in their RoR 1.0 tournaments. Although the big DE tournament used a smaller map size than normal which would encourage tool rushing.

Who here hopes the AI in Definitive Edition will be able to make walls?

The current AI's in AoE2 can't handle making walls, presumably because of the source code. This makes it easier to beat AI players since they can't force you into choke points or to take detours, allowing you to raid them from pretty much any angle.

If it's even possible, I'd certainly like to see an AI capable of walling. It would really mess with some player's tactics.

Book suggestions for Barbarossa/ Attila/El Cid?

I love reading about history, and especially about great historical figures, I believe the spark was lit by AoEII especially, since I love both that period and the game (which I still play). I have read the following books and would love to hear suggestions on nicely written books on Barbarossa, Attila, or El Cid, since the AoC are the best campaigns in my opinion.

The books I have read thusfar if someone is interested to read themselves:

  • Joan of Arc by Helen Castor. Bit drier than the other ones, but still a nice read.
  • Saladin by John Man, very nicely written book on how Saladins life played out.
  • God’s Wolf by Jeremy Lee about Reynald de Chatillon (Saladins nemesis which can be found in campaigns 2 and 3 if I am not mistaken). Tells the story of the second crusade from a Western perspective, great read.
  • Genghis Khan and the making of the modern world by Jack Weatherford. Out of all these books the best in my opinion, with not only focussing on Genghis’ life and conquest but also about Mongol life in general including laws, food, customs etc.
  • Attila (3 books) by William Napier, which is historical fantasy, overall a great read but would like to have more of an overview and historically sound read.

A trick for using british trebs vs towers

  • British trebs are 100% accurate vs units and are 100% accurate in attack ground attacks

  • British trebs are not 100% accurate vs towers. In a test I ran 3/44 shots were missed (~93% accuracy)


Thus you can attack ground on the tower for 100% accuracy (although this is somewhat time consuming and doesn't improve the damage output THAT much)

Landing and finishing games on team islands

So I played a 2v2 team islands game.Me and my teammate completely destroyed the opponents on water.So they left water and focused on land military.

My teammate had cannon galleons all around their island and I did as much as I could with galleons(I was huns)

But when it came to landing we couldnt do shit.We first tried transportation.I went elite tarkans + cav archers and trebs and my teammate went paladin+trebs.But no matter what Happened,no matter how fast we transported across,we could never completely overwhelm our opponents.We tried transporting vils to build production buildings,but those would just get trebbed down.

This went on for 3 hours.Both our scores were like 7000 ahead of our opponents,but these players just wouldn't gg.

My teammate rage quit and I had to do the same

So what should we have done differently?We also deleted so many vils and ships to make space for military but we were just stuck

How Forgatten Empires created such a bullsit changelog for Patch 2.7?

  • Fu Xi: Blessed construction now reduces the cost of Towers and Castles by 50% (was 20% ).

WTF?

  • Shennong: Reduced the Fire Lance’s splash area from 32 and the bonus damage dealt to buildings from 400%250% .
  • Shennong: Increased the bonus damage dealt to buildings by the Sitting Tiger from 300%320% .

Useless info, because it isn't damage per second, it's damage per hit. Same for Phoenix.

  • Great Flood: Increased Crush damage from 100125 . Increased persistent hack damage from 2.57.5 . Increased persistent crush damage from 1.253.75 . Now deals 100% bonus damage to Town Centers and Citadel Centers.
  • Great Flood: Raised the maximum damage dealt to units ( 1500 → 3500 damage) and buildings(12,000 → 15,000 damage).
  • Great Flood: Reduced the ally damage modifier from 20%10% .
  • Tsunami: Reduced persistent hack damage from 7.55.5 , the persistent crush damage from 3.753.0 , and the maximum Villager health damage from 1200 → 800 .

What the heck is the difference between Great Flood and Tsunami? Tell me. Totally controversial informations. And all of this crap gives zero info for a normal player who never looked into game files.

  • Chu Ko Nu: Reduced range from 16 14 . Increased Pierce damage from 4 7 , and accuracy from 0.7 0.8 .

Info quality level: Tale of the Dragon

  • Monks: Can no longer convert frozen or stoned units. Increased the base Convert time on human soldiers from 6 11 seconds, the minimum Convert time from 6 9 seconds , and the maximum Convert time from 10 11 seconds

There is no maximum convert time has no effect, it doesn't exist in the exe file. And the truth is that: nobody knows how conversion times are calculated exactly.

  • White Tiger: Reduced the bonus damage dealt to Myth units from +300% +200% .

It was reduced only for the jumpattack.

Plague of Serpents: Increased the Serpent wander distance from 4 8

It may have a negative effect because, because defensive unitAI prevents units from wandering farer than 5 distance.

  • Odin: Increased the hp bonus from +10% → +15% .

For Jarl only.

We can start to create Tale of the Dragon memes. Developers have no clue about what they write to an official changelog.

Ability to defeat AI versus ELO... what's the comparison?

Obviously humans are on another level than AI, but still.

Would it be safe to say that by the time someone can easily beat a Hardest AI in 1v1 (on land and sea maps alike), they can take on a true 1600 human?

Will I be able to redeem a game code on steam if I buy the game on MS store?

Often times on humblebundle you can redeem a game bought through their service on steam. If this is the case with AOE:DE I would happily buy the game on the MS store right now. My hesitation is that I will just need to buy a new copy when the steam version comes out. To me it makes some sense that if MS is leasing the game to steam that owning one copy should work on either platform the players prefer.

ELO Bug nightmare

Alright..
I've been having a blast the last few weeks on Aoe2 HD on Steam with some friends.

I play a lot of ranked games but recently I've encountered the ELO bug.

As of now I've lost rating ranging from 6-11 5 games straight, which I've WON. My teammates on the other hand have gained 6-11.

Amazing game, looking forward to a buggy nightmare on the remastered edition.

Got any tips on creating a good scenario? Triggers, eyecandy, etc.

I am currently planning on creating a custom campaign (first time), and I need all the tips i can get.

Two problems specifically that I'm facing, if anybody can help... (1) trying to play the scenario from the main menu doesn't work. (2) Is it possible to trigger a victory by defeating a town center? It seems that my trigger is on the settlement, not the town center, so I can't destroy it.

Got smurfed on steam in HD. Any guess at the true elo of these players?

Hey, so for backstory me and my friends usually play against the HD ai on moderate difficulty, in teams of 3v3 etc. We can easily win these so I’d say we are not noobs at the game. We played a non-ranked match earlier and got pummelled by one guy who was obviously a smurf - he had one game on his steam account. But I added him anyway and said we should have a rematch. What I didn’t expect was one of his other teammates to be insane, like, even better than this guy. Long story short we got destroyed, but when I was looking through the recording i was just in awe of how quick this guy builds. It’s insane.

We played on a random turbo map on a 4v4. Light blue and orange were the supposed smurfs. Anyone who has time to watch the recording, what do you think their true ELO is? They were both at 1600 in game.

What if the Incas' team bonus was "Markets work X% faster" instead of their farm build speed?

Incas might be a powerhouse in 1v1's, but their team bonus is quite weak. 50% faster farm construction is pretty underwhelming, and doesn't actually fit them entirely.

Instead, a bonus like "Markets work X% faster" would be more useful and would fit the Incas' history better. Being able to build Trade Carts and research Coinage/Banking faster would be deceptively useful. That and being able to research Cartography in ~0.75 seconds instead of 1 second; that's really important.

(UP 1.5, WK) Exploting kings maps: Pilgrims, Pilgrims Nothing, Texas and Settlers of Cattan

I figured out that this might be the best place to post these, as aoe2map.net isn't that popular along players. If anything isn't specified here (like, for example, recommended settings) it will be on the links themselves

So the concept is simple: these are popular community games maps modified so that where when a king dies, there's a nuclear explosion: you might have seen a few videos from T90Official with these in case you are wondering if it's the same map.
once a king dies, a dead goat with a food countdown of 10 appears. once it reaches 0, 2 explosions occur: a 33 tile radius one that weakens any castle in range and destroys everything else, and a 24 tile one that kills trees, resources and even relics and landmarks

the radius is changed in Texas and settlers of Cattan to 20/29 due to limited space

there's also a radiation version of Settlers and Texas: after the explosion, radiation will affect any unit within 20 tiles of the center of the explosion: it's 20 melee damage everytime a 3 food water buffalo decays at ground zero, but it decreases the farther you get from it. Still experimenting with it, for now the radiation effect is pretty minimal

How to win very late games?

So I just finished a one hour long ranked game. I was hades and he was Thor. For some reason neither of us got a clear advantage for the entire hour.

The situation was like this. Our frontlines were a protobolos range from each other and there was constant fighting in between. My sides were fortified and his weren’t but he kept some units near the TCs (somehow I didn’t win middle with the pop advantage, I think I had more civilian units I probably should have sold.

I tried to counter his units but he used a combination of ulfsarks, jarls, valkaries and those Hill fort archers so it was hard so it was difficult. I tried to move some protobolos to his sides but like I said he had units there. If I sent more than just protobolos I started to get pushed back in the center and I couldn’t afford this.

We destroyed each other’s titan gates earlier.

What could I have done to fight such a game?

Btw: eventually he resigned without saying anything, probably had to go.

Why is Age of Empires 2 HD Edition on Steam crashing during multiplayer constantly?

So I am not sure if this is the right sub or not just let me know and I will delete if necessary but please don't downvote as this is a weird bug I am having. Me and my brother keep trying to play Age of Empires 2 HD edition on Steam. It used to run fine a few years ago but for some reason our games constantly get interrupted. I am playing in London and he is in Devon (both in the UK on WiFi). Should I try connecting to Ethernet?

We never had the issue over wifi before but we can't even use the Steam chat because the Steam voice chat is so bad it's easier to talk over Facebook messenger chat since he doesn't have discord. I don't use it either so please don't suggest that. Thanks though. Basically I am wondering why the game keeps disconnecting. Our laptops are powerful enough to run it on Multiplayer before and this even happens when I play on PC. Is it just that the Internet is bad? (it's able to handle Battlefield 5 for me and other online games)

All our drivers are up to date and we validated the Steam files etc. I literally have no clue but the game crashed 3 times and said "Unable to Connect" It usually crashes like 15 minutes into the game or so right when we are building up a big army and trying to attack. Sometimes it lasts longer then that. Is it because there are so many characters on screen? We usually play with 4 other enemy AI bots besides us (both on the same team) just like casual on medium difficulty nothing too intense, lol.

Any reason why it's not working would be much appreciated. Don't know what I am doing wrong. At university I only used Ethernet since I had an Ethernet plug right on my desk and it had a very strong connection but we still had this issue. My laptop has built in WiFi with all the latest drivers.

An inspiring example why you should always check the settings before playing a game.

Having a decent deathmatch player to play against usually is a challenge I would not like to miss, so when I saw a 2.1k ELO player on HD today I thought, lets give it a shot. 11

Joined without really checking the settings, since a 2k+ player should really know how to set up such a game, right?

Well, not exactly.. It was a 1v1 DM game with 125 pop, treaty and standard victory. What did my opponent do?

Spammed Siege Workshops and Siegerams and Halbediers in my base while the treaty still was running, put walls and castles everywhere. After I repelled that attack with some onagers in pretty much not more than a few seconds, he/she built a wonder in the other corner of the map.

Oh and did I mention it was full techtree? :P

The player was called "The_Viper". If you encounter that person in the wild be cautious. It's not a very good player by any means, but that fellow surely knows how to cheese hard.

Attention to WRP'ers

Hello, fellow strategists and roleplayers.

I write this post to inform you of our Discord Server dedicated to bringing WRP back to it's glory. We do WRP sessions mostly during holidays (now) or whenever planned accordingly. We currently have 45 members and we are growing slowly, but surely, our little group is called WRP Elites which has been in the WRP genre for years, and now we have our own Discord server, we also have members from other clans, experienced members and also newer members, our goal is to unite the WRP community and make it great again. We have competent roleplayers and talented map makers, doing WRP sessions on their maps is a blast, we have our own lore section where we keep the best stories and biographies. We have also implemented a feature that allows anyone to play music during a session via using a music bot, it adds a lot of immersion and depth to this gamemode. We also want to WRP on other games like AoE III and 0.a.d. and in the future, AoE II: Definitive Edition. Now that server issues will be fixed, our WRP sessions on EE will be much more enjoyable.

If you could design a Random Map, what would it be like?

Mine would be something about subterrain battle with a backstory of two opposing sides fighting over a mountain passage that is a valuable defence position for either side. There would be only withering dead trees and few of them, two rivers and decent sized lake filled with food, also gold and stone mines would be twice or thrice more frequent.

With UP/modding capabilities I would like the Feitoria effect to be added to capturable Gaia resource areas/objects, this in my mind has potential to lead to more battling and less economic macroing. I am not a fan of building up a whole Empire every game and then see it get terminated every time with the Quit button, so I would probably also like more starting buildings and maybe enforce even a Feudal Age starting situation.

So, what are your ideas?

Shennong Monks converting myth units slowly?

I'm making a scenario in which the player starts with a number of Monks who can convert enemy myth units, but they just stand there and wave with their arms forever (easily a full minute) with nothing happening. In 10 different tests, I wasn't able to convert a single unit.

Is this a common issue?

A minor technical note on build rates with multiple villagers

This website (http://www.aoe2sheet.info/knowledge_base.html#building) and the aoe2 wiki (https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Villager_(Age_of_Empires_II)#Buildings) claim that the build time formula for multiple villagers is:

build time = 3*t/(n+2) 

where t is the time it takes 1 villager to build a building (e.g. 3500 seconds for a wonder) and n is the number of villagers.

This is not quite correct. The correct formula seems to be

build time = t/(0.67+0.33*n) 

The difference being that a rounding effect will occur meaning that buildings will take slightly longer to build than expected. The difference is easiest to spot when 4 villagers build a wonder. The commonly used formula would predict a build time of 1750 seconds. The correct formula predicts a build time of 1759 seconds. The build time of 1758 is what occurred when I tested it.

The increased build time is 0.5% more at 4 vills than expected under the commonly used formula; 0.75% more at 10 vills; and 0.87% more at 20 vills. This error factor does not exceed 1.001%. So ultimately the difference is small (but real).

Need help with creating a symmetric map in the editor ?

Hi guys,

is there a way to make a symmetric map in the editor, where I start exactly from the centre of the map quickly ? Or do I have to count the grid tiles in the editor and work my way from there ? I imagine there is some copy/paste option, so I would only to one side and then copy it, but it I want it symmetric all needs to be counted well..is there a way ?

Final "error 100" solution for Steam purchases made during Summer sale

Unfortunately, Microsoft was unable to activate the invalid game keys handed out during Summer sale retroactively. However, they have communicated the issue to Steam, meaning that you can now reach out to Steam support, who will be able to manually replace your invalid key with a brand new one.

Quoting the official announcement, you should contact Steam support with the following information:

  1. Your Steam account name (the one you use to login, NOT your display name)
  2. The CD key of your game
  3. A detailed description of the issue

If Steam is able to verify your information, they will issue you a new CD key.

Unfortunately, the official announcement post is missing a key next step here. Once you've got the new key, you must run the registry cleanup script in order to delete the previously-received invalid game key from your system and become able to enter the newly received one. Reinstalling the game is not needed and will have no effect; all that you need to do is running the script and launching AoE3, after which you will be automatically prompted to enter your new CD key.

The solution isn't ideal, but at this point I'm just glad there is one. Hopefully everyone can now get the issue resolved to join us in multiplayer!

Fish trap/Fishing ship mechanics

As i remember, in old versions of AOE2, it was easier to collect food from fish traps. If you had only one tile between traps and dock, no matter where (directions) traps are, there would be no problem. But now, fishing ships are trying to collect fish in "same angle" for every trap (left, right, top, bottom), follow weird directions and sometimes confuse and wait above traps as idle.

Why didn't the developers solve this issue? If it was that hard, why earlier versions of AOE2 were able to do it better?

Wanting to play Competitive AOE2

Ive been playing Aoe2 HD edition for the best part of 2 years, and want to get competitive, or maybe compete in some tournaments to show my face around the block so to speak. Does anyone know of how I could do so, ive heard playing on Voobly is a start, not really sure what the difference is except the Pros all use Voobly. If anyone could help and point me in the right direction, with tournaments for lower level players, I would love to get involved :)

Disconnect a few minutes into games

Someone disconnects in every online match I play and i think it has something to do with my connection. I have only started playing again recently, and this was never an issue in years past.

When I play with just my friend we don't seem to have issues, whether or not we use the same internet connection. I have no problem joining games.

My internet speed (wifi) is fast and I don't notice issues outside of aoe - would intermittent connection cause this? I thought brief lapses in connection would allow games to resume if they lasted shorter than the disconnect timer.

I've added all 5 of the executable steam apps to my firewall list. My IP is static, I've reset my modem and router, still have the same issue.

Any ideas?

Why don't more people use longswordsmen or the swordsmen line in general?(exception Slavs)

I've found that longswordsmen + mangonels in castle age is an extremely powerful combo.Since longswordsmen are so cheap and create fast,you can consistently create mangonels and get up to imp.Then this becomes onager + champs.Add in trebs as well.As gold starts running low,switch to halbs.

Pros to champs+siege over halbs+siege

1)Halbs disappear to mass arbs or heavy scorpions.+3 champions dont

2) Champions actually have a shit ton of destructive power on their own,so if your someone like me with bad mangonel micro,you still do a lot of damage.Halbs do nothing except when against paladins,in which case you should start mixing halbs.

3)You need less vils on wood and can still sustain onager production and can also sell the wood.

4)Can make hussars/light cav by having more farmers for raids.

Best civs to use this with:Celts, Malians,Slavs, Japanese, Vikings (not as good as the other 4)
