You wake up and find yourself in the realm of Aoe2, you are told to choose your loadout and march to war, what unit's loadout do you take?

Stats are not applicable except for armour and your own skill set is taken into account.

For me personally I would choose to take a halberd. It's easy to use, allows me to fight from a range and I can use it to ward off potential cavalry.

I have no experience with bows so that's out of question, don't trust myself riding a horse or elephant, and don't want to use a single shot hand cannon.

Using a halberd is simply the most overall efficient weapon for me.

Sucks to Suck, aka the Trials and Tribulations of HD 1700s

So, after peaking at about 760 ELO, I shed a lot of it to some badly played 1v1s. No big deal, but I have trouble finding 1vs1 Arabia games now. So. Team games. Sure, why not.

Gold pit. MY scout rush gets shut down by palisades, but, ok. I'll pump archers and boom. Ally tries to forward castle like three times. Get's shut down by Watch towers(inside the enemy walls...), knights, etc. I'm in the center, telling him we need to take the center. He goes for the forward castle. Again. IT WORKS!

But of course, by this time, the enemy have attacked the center in a big way, they drop castles on it, and push me off.

Jeezus. How is this not a thing people understand? ALL the gold is in the center. ALL OF IT. You gotta take the... what? CENTER.

AOE3's Greatest Games Episode 6: Aizamk (Japan) vs Boneng (Russia)

A bit late, but technically I haven't missed a week of game recaps, just posted the last one to a different site. This week: My two favorite players, both returning faces who both won in their past entries, in an absolutely wild match.

This was game 2 of a Saturday Smackdown, played on Saguenay. Aizamk won game 1 and elected to go with Japan. Boneng countered with Russia. Russia vs Japan is certainly an interesting matchup and generally one where the outcome is clear fairly soon. Either the Russian player successfully thwarts the Japan boom or Japan gets away with it. But did you think a game between Aizamk and Boneng would be normal?

Yeah... Strap in.

Openings

No 10/10 Ninja rushes or Tori Gate/Daimyo pushes for Aizamk. He lays down an early consulate, allies with the Portuguese, and begins his shrine boom. Boneng also plays standard, aging up with 14 villagers and building a forward blockhouse to get some early pressure going once he hits colonial. He does build the blockhouse with 4 villagers, however. He's in a bit of a hurry to get Japan on the defensive before its boom kicks in. That's how basically every matchup vs Japan works. The non-Japan player is on a clock. Stagnate Japan before time runs out or else.

Boneng on the Offensive

As soon as his first shipment of 5 Cossacks arrives, Boneng moves in. The cavalry, supported by a first batch of Strelets, march into Aizamk's base and just knock over the small force of Yumis inside. (A bit of a mistake, I think, to train Yumis versus Russia. But not really my place to critique the play of a Brigadier.)

Aizamk is immediately put in an awkward position. His villagers are stuck in the town center and he doesn't have enough coin for his sentries to push away the Russian force. He's not in danger of losing his town center or anything, but it's generally hard to win Age of Empires games when you can't gather resources.

"I sense a short game coming here." -ZutaZuta

A shipment of 5 Yumi archers arrive for Aizamk and Boneng decides to back off and boom, having killed some villagers and slowed the Japanese economy down mightily. Now he could have gone for the throat here, and perhaps that would have been the better move, but this is the safe one. He's ahead. No sense in throwing a lead away by over committing. Besides, it wouldn't be a Boneng game if he didn't get to at least age 3. He begins what winds up being a massive spam of fishing boats (109 will be made when it's all said and done) and prepares for the long game.

But this doesn't mean he's done pressuring. Once his mass of Strelets recovers he sends them right back into Aizamk's base. In the brief lull between pushes he threw up walls to protect himself and is there anything prettier in AOE3 than a really efficiently made wall? I don't think so. Aizamk's wall is certainly pretty, but there's a small gap in it that the Strelets march straight through and now Boneng has the best of both worlds. He's outbooming Aizamk and at the same time applying strong pressure. But we all know how things go in this series. The tide will turn.

IT'S A TRAP

Having corrected the hole in his wall, Aizamk knows the next push is likely going to be on the unprotected left side of his base, where his villagers are currently gathering coin and wood. He plops down a stable in the back and moves his small army over to protect it. Right on cue, Boneng moves in with his Strelets. They push the outnumbered Japanese army back. The villagers flee from the mine and the Yumi retreat up to the northernmost corner of the map. The Strelets pursue, sensing an opportunity to wipe the enemy army out.

"He's gotta be careful here not to overextend into a big pop of cav." -ZutaZuta

And for the first time in this series, Zuta is dead on. Naginatas pop out of the stable 2 seconds after he says this. Boneng is immediately on the retreat. He sends his Cossacks in to intercept the Japanese cavalry, and for a moment it looks like he will hold it off just fine, but Aizamk focuses the Russian cavalry down and reinforces with even more Naginatas. Once the Cossacks are down, the Strelets stand no chance.

Boneng positions his units as well as he can, in the thick of trees next to a friendly blockhouse, but Aizamk's trap works perfectly. The Strelets are slaughtered and the blockhouse falls soon after.

It is now Aizamk's turn to decide whether to go for the kill or play it safe. He's secured his base for the time being, but Boneng still has the longterm advantage and controls the entire trading post line.

Aizamk's decision: To out Boneng Boneng.

Aizamk at the Gates

While sieging down the trading posts and harassing the Russian town, Aizamk heads up to Age 3. And a minute or two later cues up Age 4. Meanwhile he ends relations with Portugal and makes a new best friend in Spain, which will make his shipments come hard and fast. And since he trained a Daimyo, he will be able to send them straight into the heat of a battle.

The armies meet again, and what looks like an even fight is quickly made into a massacre when Flaming Arrows arrive straight out the behind of the Damiyo. Boneng is able to escape with his musketeers, but the Strelets get wrecked.

Aizamk now has full momentum. He strikes at the heart of the Russian base. The walls crumble and soon it's a street fight. Falconets arrive for Russia. Soldiers pour out of blockhouses and try to swarm the Japanese army. Aizamk slips up and doesn't focus down the Russian units very well, and half his army gets preoccupied with tearing down walls instead of fighting.

Cossacks come out from the stable and make a beeline for the flaming arrows. It would be nothing short of a disaster if they reach them. But Aizamk still has a trick up his sleeve. Or rather, units up his Damiyo's anus. 29 Soheis pop out the Damiyo and chase the Cossacks away. 3 of his 4 flaming arrows survive and fire away at the Strelet horde. But Boneng is not beaten. The Russians are nothing if not resilient. Three blockhouses pop out batch after batch of units, more Cossacks arrive to take down the flaming arrows. Unable to reinfoce, the Japanese army is repulsed. Aizamk's push doesn't come close to accomplishing its goals. . Once again, Boneng is in control.

The Heroes of the Japanese Empire

What remains of the Japanese army takes down the trading post line for the second time. Boneng lets it happen and follows Aizamk up to age 4. He's not concerned about trading posts. He's got another, much more devilish plan.

He's spamming Oprichniks.

If you are unfamiliar with these villager-hating, troll-loving units, these are unique Russian cavalry that can only raid and kill artillery. They are weak to all other units, but absolutely wreck villagers and have enormous siege potential. Boneng spams dozens of them and gets them upgraded, then sends them straight for the underbelly of Aizamk's base. With his army away sieging trading posts, he has nothing but a castle protecting the majority of his villagers from Boneng's cavalry.

It is a desperate time for Japan. Yet, in this moment, two heroes emerge.

Two Hatamoto Samurai pop out of a monastery just as the raid begins. It is two samurai versus no less than twenty oprichniks. And it is more than enough. In a moment as glorious as it is hilarious, the entire Russian army turns tail and runs. And they were right to. Hatamoto hate Oprichniks as much as Oprichniks hate villagers.

The Fall of the Japanese Empire

There is, however, one small problem to trying to defend your entire empire with 2 foot soldiers.

Pushed off but not deterred, Boneng sends his cavalry to the south, and uses his infantry to push the Samurai away. Unable to reach the cavalry now, Aizamk has no choice but to watch. Town centers fall in under 10 seconds. There is a terrible sound of screams and then nothing.

Video

I did not do a great job of describing just how effective Boneng's water boom was, since there was just so much to cover on land. He tries it again in game 4 of this series. Will he get away with it again? Go check it out for some bonus fun.

Anyone else feel fire galleys are still a little bit too powerful in the expansions.

I know regular galleys are supposed to beat them in large numbers but getting large numbers is close to impossible when 1 fire galley can take on around 3 galleys early feudal.

I just think fire galleys should be nerfed to do 80-85% of their current damage. This wont make a big change but will make the transition to galleys much more viable.

What would you do to nerf fire galleys, if you think they need a nerf in the first place.

Basic dark age build orders

I'm sure this has been asked before, but is there a website where I can look at the basic build orders for dark age? Maybe one for going scouts in feudal and one for archers. I realized that I can kinda get to feudal in good time (early 10 mins with 23 pop) but my resources are a mess when I hit feudal. Maybe sticking strictly to a well defined BO will help refine my game a little more.

Theres rightly been a lot of discussion and comparison of these units recently as the experts are playing a lot of Wololo. The experts themselves certainly seem to think some balance changes are needed, but do not all necessarily agree. From what I've seen, most people seem to think camel archers are OP, and opinions are somewhat divided on Arambai.

Some of my thoughts:

  • I've always wondered why people thought that Arambia are OP, but didn't have a problem with Conqs for 16 years. They do certainly fire faster, but that is somewhat compensated by having such horrid accuracy. They are a little cheaper, and cost wood instead of food. Burmese do have a solid eco bonus while Spanish don't. Nonetheless, Conqs have more armor and can be upgraded to have even better armor. I guess I'm still in the camp that is skeptical how Arambai can be OP while Conqs somehow aren't considered OP. I've always thought Conqs were OP so I'd be ok with both getting a nerf.

  • I am fully in the camel archers are OP camp, though not sure how best to nerf them. In castle age, they are cheaper than Mangudai, and better in almost every way (on top of this, they directly counter Mangudai and are not as weak to camels). In Imp, camel archers have more HP, possible HP regeneration, more base armor, more bonus armor, but less siege attack bonus and rate of fire. I think all this is rather unfair; camel archers should generally be worse than mangudai, because they are supposed to be used specifically as a counter to cav archers.

  • Maybe I'm just a sentimental fool, but I think Mangudai should have the shortest attack delay of these four units. This makes sense historically given that they spent their lives on horses shooting arrows, and I also think Mangudai have generally lost a step with the new units, which is to be lamented. Ok, it doesn't need to go down to zero like it was before, but it should at least be a shorter delay than Conqs. Right now, Conqs are more fun to micro than Mangudai. Thats just wrong.

  • overall, I really am annoyed by the fact that all of the above RANGED units that do RANGED damage have bonus damage vs. rams. Of course Mangudai should, that is their specialty. But the others? Part of the problem with Arambia and Camel archers dominating the current meta is that they have no counter, and rams don't work against them. At the very least, I think that Conqs, Arambia, and Camel archers should all lose their attack bonus vs rams.

Whew. Now I know that it is probably best to wait until after KOTD before making any hasty balance changes, but what are your thoughts as of now?

House mechanics

Just wanted to ask what do you guys think about the housing game mechanic in Age? Just randomly got huns 2 games in a row and that got me thinking whats the purpose for houses in the game. Having no houses didn't feel much different than having to build them. Not like not being able to house-wall is as noticeable as for example Goths not having stone walls. And the mechanic feels more like just keeping up some apm. Theres pretty much no decisions involved , not exactly an option not to build them for strategic purpose or anything. And I'm not saying it needs to be removed or anything just wanted to bring up a discussion Whats your thoughts / opinions on this?

Aztec Fire Pit Management Questions

I've been really enjoying playing as Aztecs lately, and Fire Pit management seems like very nuanced and important aspect to playing them well. Specifically, I was looking for guidance on:
1. 3 WP vs 5V cards
Obviously both cards are oriented toward long-term play, and most build orders I have seen recommend sending one or the other after 700W. In a situation where it is not necessary to send military, what are the conditions that lead experienced Aztecs to send either vils or WP?
2. when to dance for more WP
Again obviously the option to dance for more WP supports a longer-term plan, but its very hard to tell when sacrificing the xp gain is worth it. I'm guessing this depends somewhat on how many dancers are currently active, as dancing for WP with only the starting WP is incredibly painful.
3. when to dance with vils, if at all.
No guide or strategy that I have read has had any concrete advise on whether or not dancing with vils is worth it at various stages in the game. Is there any kind of consensus or mathematical reasoning on this?

I have been going 3V -> 700W -> 3WP -> 5V ->600G (age up) in games where I want to be particularly greedy/late game focused, and while having 10WP dancing feels amazing, spending the time accumulating them rarely does. I have tried starting immediately when 3WP arrives, and I have tried waiting for 5V, tasking them to dance as well, and both feel like a major tempo sacrifice. However, it seems like delaying any further won't be worth it, as the game should be getting close to ending. Any guidance or discussion is much appreciated!

is competitive games more fun to play than casual games?

like, Does TheViper have more fun playing aoe than a player who've just got into the game and likes building pretty cities, making big armies and stuff? like could you tell this guy "hey, if you learn how to play well, you'd have lots more fun" or tell someone who doesn't like the game at first "if you learn how to play it well, you'll like it then"?

is competitive games and casual games totally different games, such as DM games and RM games or an Arabia game and a BF game? and whoever likes the other over the other is fine or is RM Arabia objectively the main game where the fun can reach its peaks and the casual players are missing out?

what are your thoughts guys?

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Spanish....

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Spanish. Their civ bonus is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of econ management most of the jokes will go over a typical player’s head. There’s also the unique tech Supremacy, which is deftly woven into its playstyle- their personal playstyle draws heavily from Don Quixote, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these strategies, to realise that they’re not just gimmicks- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike the Spanish truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the entire Aztec campaign, which itself is a cryptic reference to Pablo Picasso's painting of the bombing at Guernica. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Ensemble Studio’s genius balance unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them. šŸ˜‚

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Spaniards tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the Aztecs’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 minutes of my feudal time (preferably higher) beforehand.

What to use against Arambai?

I've played some games against Burmese civ recently and no matter what I do, I can't seem to counter Arambai. Even on twitch, often see pros struggle against Arambai even with huge eco and military advantage. The Arambai just wipe out that advantage ...almost like using those cobra cheat cars.

Is there a counter to Arambai or are they simply OP?

What is the manliest unit in the game that you have weakness for, would make you sweat and your knees weak if you met it irl? Elaborate please. (no homo ofc)

Id go for a huskarl. I mean, just look at him. His beard, hairy muscular chest and fucking biceps thicker than most men's legs. He beats the living shit out of 60 kg hipster pussies hiding behind bows and arrows with his majestic shield. He's the one we need in this world of effeminate men, The Rock of age of empires. Remember the scene from Fast and Furious 8 where he escaped the prison with Jason Statham? Where guards tried to stop him with rubber bullets (lol) but ended up having their asses handled to them? Everyone else would've fallen, but not him. In my opinion that's the most accurate representation of an aoe huskarl in history. The more arrows you shoot at him, the more pissed he gets.

Again, no homo. and no bestiality either (for you, war elephant fans). Thanks for reading, im looking forward to reading more wet dream stories!

Any particular reason for the missing languages on the steam AoE3 Complete Collection?

One of the nice things about AoE3 was that, even tho it's a 2005 game, they translated it to a lot of languages. But why are many of those languages missing in the steam version of the game? Is there a way for me to install it in my language (portuguese)?

How can I mod text? Also, help on making a workshop mod (HD edition)?

I have the HD edition and I've been having some fun modding the numbers of the game in Genie Editor, but when I try to change the names of things in Genie Editor, that program crashes.

I found some reddit posts from a couple years ago where Cysion says you can just directly alter the text file with notepad (found in steamapps\common\Age2HD\resources\en\strings\key-value) but if I alter the ''key-value-strings-utf8'' file the game crashes on startup.

Is the solution something to do with the ''key-value-modded-strings-utf8'' file? I tried to make a workshop mod, following a guide, but it didn't do anything even though I seemed to have everything in place. I can play my modded game version when I replace the original data file with mine directly, can't seem to get it to work as a 'mod' though.

How to avoid Daut mining camp

Hey guys, this is a super trivial question, but I'm curious for your feedback. I was playing a game recently where I had one of those annoying-shaped golds. At the time I put down my mining camp I was microing scouts in the enemy base so I just kind of threw it down, and only later realized how terrible it was.

After looking at the rec, I figured spots 1 and 2 might have been better. I asked a friend who's a stronger player (he's 17xx voob) and he suggested spot 1 and then 3 for the second mining camp, which to me looks awful. Where would you guys put it?

Happy Birthday Age of Mythology! 15 long years since 2002.

Whilst the last few years haven't been too great with you, due to Corporate Greed/Corporatism and neglect, but the small community is still strong, and still fanatically loves you.

Anyone else feel physically ill when all of their woodlines are on a hill?

I just get so frustrated knowing I will have to awkwardly place lumber camps and micro manage villagers more frequently.

I give a sigh of relief when I start and notice both woodlines are on level ground, I can easily place the camp and identify when villagers need to micro-managed.

Best counter to Spanish on water in the super late game?

Basically, the Spanish Cannon Galleon is insanely powerful in this situatuon. When massed up it's almost impossible to beat when combined with galleons. Is there a good solution I'm missing?

Assume that resources aren't really a factor. The water is won/lost before resources run out.

Is it possible to code this buff?

The previous age's upgrades are free once the next age is reached (for a particular tech).

E.g. man-at-arms upgrade is free in castle age and long swordsman upgrade is free in imperial age (but two handed swordsman and champion are not free)

This is just an example but it could be an interesting buff, especially if the civ is incentivised to build the unit early - and so they have to consider the cost of upgrading against the benefit of using the upgraded unit early.

I would buy AOE DE if it was on GoG or Steam.

If anyone of the people making this game or on the team. I know a lot of people would buy this game but since its on windows 10 only they aren't. I feel like it is a pretty big mistake to only have it on the windows store.

After losing about 24 games in 2 weeks, I decided to win. I wasn't quite sure how, so I looked at this subreddit and saw many wonderful ideas and people which inspired me to go Huns.

I decided Huns because they don't need houses and I hate my house.

I hope this does get free karma,

Anybody know who infected the pros w/ the word pickle?

I watch a lot of pro games on youtube from Daut, Viper, Jordan etc. and I think it's so funny how the expression, "I'm in a pickle" when one of them is in trouble, is said all the time. Daut says it so much and I love it.

Anybody else notice this, and does anybody know which of them started it? They all speak really good English but since none of them are native speakers, I have to imagine somebody taught them it. lol.

Issues with multiplayer games crashing? [Steam]

Hey all,

Tried to play three for four multiplayer games today, once the game starts it just starts crazy lagging and half the players get booted everytime. This has not impacted my ELO well, but more importantly I basically cannot play online.

I've tested my connection [wired ethernet, good speeds, 8ms ping etc] and it works fine on other games.

Any one having similar issues?

FYI I'm running Steam AoE2 via PlayOnMac on High Sierra.

I have about 500 games on my devices, from Xbox 360 to Gameboy sp. A lot of these I do not play, I am trying to find a game like rust, or age of empires, or a game with a style of Enter the Gungeon. Basically, a game where you start with nothing and after time you have a lot. Not something like Minecraft of course but still. If you are reading this, please help me find a game!

looking for a good civ combo

Hey guys,

my friend and me are "coming back" to AoE3 and now we are looking for a good civ combo. Our first goal is to beat bots on expert difficulty becaus we think we will get destroyed against real player. What would be a good civ combo for us? We both like top turtle first and defend some waves before we attack with a very big amount of units. He likes to play japanese, i dont have a prefered civ.

it would be awesome if you could help us a bit with the civ desicion and maybe recommend me a guide.

Help me improve my game please!

Hi everyone! I had a match on Voobly (a 4v4 BF on 1.4RC) that our team ended up losing, on BF I am always at a loss on what to do when enemy enters my base (esp. on 1v1s) I would love if you guys could take a look at the match recording and tell me on what areas should I improve and what I should have done once the enemy entered the flank player's base? P.S. Don't miss my Seige Onager shooting Cyan's vills after entering his base after cutting through forest, I wish I had a vill with him xD

Recording: http://ift.tt/2xxNYUl

EDIT: I had a similar 1v1 BF match on AoE2HD on steam (Jap[me] vs Persians) I didn't know what to do after he used Paladins+Seige onager to tear down my walls, I tried putting out halbs but it was too late :/

What if all Civs had 2 Unique Units?

Some i could think of...

Britons: Knight Hospitaller. Basically a similar unit to the Teutonic Knight but with lower stats, but the added bonus it can heal itself.

Byzantines: Varangian Guard. An Elite Infantry unit. Their axes makes them really good at taking other infantry, and since the are basically vikings they also heal and have quite a bit of hp.

Celts: Gallowglass. I feel the current Celts focus to much on the Scots, but they should also have some Irish units. the Gallowglass would add to their infantry with a heavy armor unit.

Chinese: Rocket Launcher. A new type of artillery, insanely inaccurate, but they shot on volleys and deal a lot of damage. They do have a long reload though.

Franks: Frankish Paladin. They finally add the unit they get, its a low cost upgrade to the Paladin. Considering how Franks are already a cavalry only civ, this unit would make up for the lack of Bloodlines as the unit is a Lance unit so it should deal Trample damage, similar to the Cataphract.

Goths: Falxmen. Another trash unit for the Goths. Even lower recruitment rate, but pretty garbage since it has shit armor. Deals a lot of damage to infantry though. So Falxmen together with Huskarls can be devastating.

Japanese: Warrior Monk. While i would love the ninja, i don't think they would work. So Naginata Warrior Monks might be the other choice. Built at the Monastery. They are basically Halberdiers, but they have the added bonus the Can heal friendly units. Since they are Monks. They can't convert though, now that they are warriors you are now an infidel and only death can cleanse your sins. They lack armor but they absolutely deal a lot of damage.

Mongols: Hunting Wolf. Subutai has them, now you can recruit them. Also the mongols did have them. They are pretty strong, deal average damage and are fast. The benefit they don't cost gold, but they take a long time to recruit. And they deal extra damage to villagers. Making Mongol raids even scarier.

Persians: Immortals. The ultimate trash unit. Absolute garbage, incredibly cheap. But in numbers they can be annoying. The Persians have the problem of relying a lot on Elite expensive units. Having the cheapest trash tier unit will allow you for some unconventional strats.

Saracens: Hashashim. These guys are fast and hit hard. They are expensive and take long time to recruit. They also have a very high line of sight, making them a very good ambush unit.

Teutons: Mounted Teutonic Knight. Another tank, but this one is on horse, incredibly expensive, but incredibly powerful.

Turks: Great Bombard. The biggest cannon artillery in the game. Building destroyer, large aoe, very slow movement and reload.

Aztecs: Blowpipe Warriors. Ranged units that can melee. they have very fast attack rate, and they have a bonus vs infantry.

Huns: Unnigarde. Basically Mangudai but far more tanky, but also more expensive.

Mayans: Macahuitl. Much weaker than Jaguar Warriors, but they cost much less gold. Combined with the buffed Eagle Warriors, they get more solid infantry.

Magyars: Fekete Sereg. Basically trash cavalry with guns. They deal pretty low damage, but they have the gunpowder bonus vs infantry.

Slavs: Svarog Raiders. Similar to the Genitour a cavalry skirmisher.

Berbers: Bedouin Raiders. Scout Cavalry Camels but they are camels so they still get their bonus vs cavalry.

And pretty much everyone else i have no idea. But im sure they could get a 2nd unique unit no problem.

Which Civ (original game + new expansion) would profit the most from the all techs option checked?

Inspired by the recent post about the elite longbowmen being nerfed by all techs I wondered which civ would overall come out on top with all techs enabled.

I realize that it's probably mainly about unique units being boosted, but are there other ways civs would be better off with all techs?

Elite Longbowmen Range

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I could not find anything when searching.

I was playing a standard game (Regicide) with the Britons in AoE2:HD on steam (with all expansions). I noticed that my Elite Longbowmen had a range of 6+3; but I seem to recall them being capable of a range of 6+6. I've researched all the blacksmith and castle technologies already.

Just to test (in case I missed a technology), I also started a standard game in the post imperial age just to see what the range the Elite Longbowmen would have, and it was still 6+3.

How can I get the range up to 6+6?

is there a mod to give ships idle animations?

So yesterday ai had my little bro play the learning campaigns. I noticed something. When I watch archers, men at arms, cavalry, they all have idle animations. then i look at ships, and it doesn't do anything. the sails are stiff, there's no creaking of the wood or swearing of the sailors. what the hell

Counter people who gives up land and plays sea only?

Twice now in a very short time have I met people that give up their TC and build one on the shore, and all their buildings along the shore, just to build war ships to cover them.

The first time I tried to build culverins as they have decent range and are anti-ship. He simply shot them down. So this time I thought I would try mortars and simply take down the buildings, but everytime he shot them down and I have no idea how, he said they were always in visible range, even tho I went for the buildings closest to the mortars. I even sent my army in first so that the mortars could shoot from their absolutely longest range.

It's impossible to beat their economy and the first time I also tried to destroy the buildings with cavalry. But apparently war ships + dragoons are a deadly combination. I got slaughtered.

This just feels like a cheese tactic that demands no skill from my opponent at all, and they still crush me. What can I do?

A good bug in HD (Downscaling)

Hi all. I am facing an useful bug in HD, so I want to share with you. My laptop screen resolution is 1080p and also I have a 4K external monitor. After I connect the laptop to the monitor I can play in 4K resolution even after disconnect the laptop from monitor. I mean I can play in 4K with a 1080p monitor (laptop screen) if connect and dissconnect once to the monitor. After I restart the laptop everything returning to the initial situation.

I wonder, If it is possible to play that zoomed out why they can make it default. I will add screenshots soon.

Just managed to win my first game on Voobly

After 11 losses and many practice games against friends I finally won my first game by spamming cavalry archers into his economy followed by an offensive castle placement and 10ish trebuchets and 50ish heavy cavalry archers. Game was far from perfect and my opponent had a 3-17 record but it still feels good to finally win after getting demolished like 8 times and fucking up three times while I was already winning.

My personal ranking of all civs + small civ overviews for them

Hello everyone, this is my first post on this subreddit, i hope you will find it interesting.

As you can probably guess by the title of the post, i am going to rank all 31 civs.

My ranking is devided into 4 tiers

  1. Very good. Civs 1-10

  2. Good. Civs 11-20

  3. Average. Civs 21-27

  4. Bad. Civs 28-31.

In this post i wil talk about civs 1-5. So, lets start.

Tier: very good.

Number one. Byzantines. A very good defensive and all-round civ thar has an answer to EVERYTHING. Byz have very good civ bonuses, average infantry with amazing halbs, good archery range with solid arbs, amazing cheap skirms and average cavalry archers, good handcannons, good cavalry with unfortunate lack of bloodlines, but with super cheap cameles, a little weak but still capable paladins and hussars, top tier navy with the best fire ships in the game, amazing monks, meh siege, best defences, very solid economy due to having all eco upgrades, cheaper units and imperial age. Cataphracs are BEASTS, they have no real counter and very solid stats make them worth their huge price. Byzantines have pretty good but not amazing unique techs too, increasing the range of fire ships is cool, better cataphracts are welcome. Their ONLY downside is lacking bloodlines and siege engineers. What else could you ask from an amazing civ with no real weakness?

Number two. Spanish.

Just like Byzantines, a very good well-rounded civ with good defences. They have the best team bonus in the entire game, average civ bonuses, good infantry, probably the second best handcannons in the game, somewhat underrated archers (their archers can defeat frank crossbows, crossbows of some other civs due to having all archer grades), good skirms, pretty good cav archers, great hussars and paladins, second best monks, top tier navy, very good defences, ok economy due to the best traiding, bad otherwise. Conquistadors and missionaries are very good support units for your army, for filling different niches to be precise. Unque techs are amazing. I consider supremacy kinda op, considering it turns your villagers into very capable infantry, plus you should have around 40 vills when you reaserch this, so you already have a sizeable army. Inquisition is quite good too, letting your monks take 1 less second to convert units and 7 less seconds to convert buildings.

Number three. Japanese.

An infantry civ that is not that single minded in their army compostion as you can expect. Have the best early eco civ bonus, debatably the best infantry in the game, very good archery range, meh cavalry, very good monks, good siege with amazing trebuchets, have probably the second or third best navy, on par with malay and italians but inferior to vikings and portugese, solid defences, a VERY good early economy due to fishing ships being very good and mills, lumber camps and mining camps being cheaper, though lacking a few important eco upgrades later in the game hurts. Samurai are a good alternative to already the best champions in the game. You should use them if your enemy heavily relies on his unique units. Otherwise it is up to you which unit to choose, as their differences in stats and cost are minimal. Their unique techs are decent, nothing really interesting to talk about though. Yasama is pretty good, while kataparuto is very situational.

Number four. Indians.

A pretty unuque civ in my opinion due to their unusual love for camles. Their fishing bonus is dependant on the map, but if you have the chance to use it, it is a very good eco bonus. Cheaper villagers are VERY helpful in early game and somewhat help to spend less resources if you have to repopulate your base after you have been raided in the late game. Armor bonus for camels is quite good, considering camels will likely be the back bone of your army. They have pretty good infantry, very good archers with arbalests, skirms, cav archers with parthian tactics and top tier hancanonns, their lack of cavalry is compensated for the best camels in the game with the addition of imperial camels, surprisingly effective units, they also have hussars which is nice, their siege is pretty good, as well as their monks. Their defences are left to be desired, their economy is one of the best in all stages of the game. Their elephant archers are not that great, though a little underrated, they are quite good agains archers and buildings. Their unique techs are very good. Sultans is probably the best eco tech in the game, making your gold income so much better, it is also a very diverse bonus, making not only vills, but mining camps and trade much better. Their 1 range increase for handcannons certainly makes the guys with guns top tier.

Number five. Berbers.

A pretty good cavalry civ with some versatility. Their bonuses are not immideately noticed, bit their usefulness can be truly big in long game. 10% speed increase for villis and ships is very nice, making your economy slightly better and imporving escaping fights you cannot win. 20% cheaper cavalry units bonus is easily one of the best in the game, saving you potentially hundreds of resources just by producing cavalry - the main unit type of your army. Their infantry is pretty good, lacking halberdier is unfortunate, but you have camels, so do not be too sad, Jimmy. Their arechery range is pretty good too, having good skirms, handcannons, though lacking arbalest and parthian tactics is not so great. Their cavalry is top tier, only being behind persians. Cheaper camels, hussars, cavaliers are a force to be reckoned with. Even the lack of paladin is minor because you can effectivly outproduce enemy paladins with cavaleirs. Their siege is quite good, and their navy is very good, though not top tier, their monks are very formidable, only lacking block printing, thier defences are average and economy is amazing if you go cavalry all the way, lacking two-man saw is not a big deal in late game. Having amazing unique units is probably the main strengh of berbers, making them so high on my list. Genitours are basically skirms on horses. They are the best units agains archers except huskarls in my opinion. Camel archers are the best anti cav archer units, but also can be decent against infantry and archers. Their unique techs re also good. Maghrabi makes camels regenerate, which makes your hit and run tactics with them very effiecient. Kasbah is a very team oriented bonus, but even in a 1vs1 game it can give benifits. Making castles work 25% faster is no joke.

So that is about it for this post.

Next time i will talk about my favourite civs 6-10.

And here is an idea: You can try to guess which civ is gonna be in my next post. Right answer - 1 free karma for you.

MONGOL SIEGE OWNAGER ARE FRIGGIN OP - In praise of the Mongol Siege Onager!

They are absolutely the best in the game by far without a Daut. I'm gunna talk about this a bit in a video before too long I'm so excited, but seriously I just had to post. If you don't believe me, answer these questions you Celtic fool!

Can you send Normal, Generic, Celtic SO from your base to your enemy base... well technically yes you can but it takes FOR EVER! Instead you have to make forward Workshops, which can take FOREVER and can But NOT with mongol SO! Mongol SO are ... SO GOOD (see what I did there you can't make dad jokes like me) that they can actually be spammed because they can ACTUALLY GET TO THE BATTLEFIELD IN TIME (we're not even talking about how much this helps Srams...)

Can you raid trade with Celt SO? Yes? LOL NO YOU NEED HALBS TO BACK THEM UP or they're DEAD. But not Mongol SO! Mongol SO are so fast you can simply RUN AWAY from stuff bad guys throw at you. Sure, cav might catch up, but by the time they do MONGOL FRIGGIN OP SIEGE ONAGERS will be safely back at a castle with some camels waiting to kill the bloodthirsty celtic Paladins.

Can you hit and run, against CAVALRY with Celt SO? Lol no of COURSE NOT! They're so slow you can't micro them at all! "bbbbbut they have kewl HP bonus".. granted Hp is nice, but mongols don't need OP HP. They can run away so fast that some simple attack ground will absolutely murder any pursuers. This even works vs Paladins (especially ones w/o husbandry).

"Wwwwhat about in a battle of Celt SO vs Mongol SO? Celt SO wins, right?????" Well,,, sure it does, if you have lag... but who tries to counter Celt SO with SO? No, Most people use Paladins.... But guess what happens when you try to use Paladins to counter Mongol SO! THEY HIT AND RUN AGAINST THE PALADINS!

If you're woundering why I'm posting, it's because I Destroyed 30 Paladins + 50 Trade carts in a game just now with about 13 Mongol SO... ONLY SO, No other untis! NOw, I'm not saying it's bad to have other units (mangadaui are sweet), but mongol SO CAN ACTUALLY BE MICROED effectively (cough cough Celts) unlike any other SO...

I'm done now. :)

Seeking Advice from Seasoned Players

I love this game. I have played 428 hours and don't plan on stopping. I have my early game down and can get to castle and boom in a very good time frame. I have memorized most hotkeys, understand the unit counters, and am very sound when it comes to game knowledge. However, despite all of my playing and comprehension of mechanics, I always run into a sort of wall when the late game comes around or if I am attacked in general. I become overwhelmed and feel powerless to act. I can hardly give my units orders, even when I know that I need to spam barracks and start massing halbs to stop the onslaught of Paladins I am facing. I get in this hesitant and useless state and all of my skill leaves me, which leads me to believe I may have none to begin with.

I am not really sure what kind of advice I am asking for here, but I was just hoping someone could tell me something, maybe a way they overcame this strange phenomenon when they were getting better themselves. My ELO is extremely low even though I can get to castle age and micro just as well as a 1700 player can. I always fall apart somewhere along the line...I need to break this habit somehow.

Noob question about hotkeys.

There's a neat little trick I've seen in competitive games from guys like Viper, where they jump from one TC to another SUPER quickly. I can't seem to figure out how to do this.

Can someone help me out?

Do you think 20 seconds overall TC Idle time is worth giving up when stealing a boar?

I am no professional so I don't expect to get perfect times but today with Aztecs I did a 29+2 (30 Villagers overall) with scout fast castle with a time of 16:51. Now hitting the ideal timings is out of my range for now so I will compare it to my average of 16:30 as Aztecs.

Learning python

Hello,

Second year bachelor student in applied physics here. I saw a thread on here a while ago about programming languages that physicists should know and it struck me that I have never really learned a programming language fully. I did dabble in a bit of Java when I was younger but never fully committed.

I was wondering, are there any good online resources for learning a programming language like Python? I feel like it would really help me for employability in the future.

Thanks!

Really quality video made by a 16 year old high school student

Not sure if this is appropriate for this sub, but its interesting and I thought I'd share it.

The video is for a competition but it isn't mine, so I don't really have any vested interests if you like or share it (the competition posts their videos on facebook). I do think its very good quality for a teenager, and it does a good job explaining quite an advanced topic. Give it a shot and give it a like if you think it's good!

I recently graduated with a biophysics degree. How can I find a job?

I've been finding it hard to get a job in my field or even something in my area of focus. I live in Los Angeles by the way. I've been finding a lot of coding jobs, and although I didn't study computer science, I do have some experience. Anyway, how can o find something better suited for my degree and my inexperience. Minimum wage isn't enough anymore. Anything you guys can tell me to help you would be so appreciated.

Special Relativity and train experiment

If we want to calculate the time dilation and the lorentz transformation equations then we take axiomatic that c=constant and perform the experiment in which the observer emits light to a mirror. So from the isosceles triangle we can calculate the equations.BUT what if we emit the light not perpendicular but on the same direction in which the train travels , then HOW DO WE CALCULATE THE EQUATIONS? Any thought?

Cannot get beta dues to being in the Middle East?

I have two email accounts that have already completed the surveys they have received. One has completed the survey a few months ago and the new one only a few weeks ago. In the survey, I answered on both surveys that I am from the Middle East. Does this affect why I have not received the beta? NOTE: I am not saying this due to racism, maybe they are handing out to Americans and Europeans first then the people in Asia and Middle East which is their least concern since not many people in Middle East play AOE.

Help with a projectiles lab

I'm an AP physics student, and today I think I messed up. We did a lab in which we launched a marble at a known angle and recorded the distance it travelled in order to calculate the initial velocity. I performed the lab, got all my data, and realized that the launcher for the marble was being released from 17cm above the surface it landed on. Basically, what I'm asking for is a way to calculate initial velocity from horizontal displacement, angle of launch, and with a net vertical displacement of -17cm. For the lab we were NOT allowed to record time, so this value is not available for the calculations. Sorry to bore you all with a simple mechanics problem, but I'm in desperate need of help. Thanks in advance.

If our planet was hit by an asteroid large enough could it disrupt our current spinning?

And would that then be conclusive that the current spinning was set in this particular spin of our globe by the same action?

How to fix the windows 7 color fix

The windows 7 color fix link on the sidebar works well for the game. But when the game ends, and I come back to voobly, the colors are messed up in Windows now. Anyone else run into the same problem? I never have this issue with steam and HD.

Artificial gravity question.

If you enter a cylindrical colony that maintains 1G of artificial gravity via rotation through the middle, (you've got an EVA propulsion harness of some kind) what's the easiest way to land? What would you need to avoid if you wanted to remain in zero-G within the colony?

Steam to voobly Patch issue

Hey guys, need some help figuring out what im doing wrong when trying to install the patch to allow voobly to work from steam.

My understanding is that i need to save the patch in my AOE2hd folder, which ive done. I then tried to run the patch (which was basically going and and running an odd version of AOE2), and went and closed out everything and re-opened, im still getting the error saying i need the patch installed.

I know i've seen quite a few people with this issue, but it seems there isnt much of a solution short of a full re-install of everything (which ive tried). Any ideas??

Does the latest Minute Physics video on time travel in fiction strike anyone else as not being very much about physics?

You can watch it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3zTfXvYZ9s. I'm not looking to start a hate thread, just want to hear some opinions.

Basically, the video analyzes the depiction of time travel in many works of fiction, looking at what happens when the universe splits into different timelines and stuff. The conclusion seems to be that (out of the examples presented) the only realistic "time travel" happens in Ender's Game, which is really just time dilation, and furthermore that the only actual time travel which makes logical sense is the one in Harry Potter. I agree with both of those things.

Still, there's a feeling I always get when people ask about time travel in a physics context, which is that it doesn't really belong there. Not only is time travel not possible as far as we know (which is not a big deal in sci-fi), almost every description of it seems to rely heavily on the concept of a person with consciousness, and what happens to that consciousness and free will when the person travels in time (take Groundhog Day for example, where the thing doing the time travel is Bill Murray's mind instead of any actual physical object). As far as I know, these are not concepts that physics can really talk about, being more in the domain of psychology, neuroscience and even philosophy.

Do you think the subject of time travel as usually depicted in fiction (with people traveling in time, timelines splitting and all that good stuff) is something physics can talk about? Or is it beyond what physics covers? Or just logically inconsistent?

Deriving Associated Laguerre Polynomial solutions for the Hydrogen Radial Equation

I'm currently in quantum mechanics and we are studying they hydrogen atom right now. The solutions for both the phi equation and the radial equation are expressed in associated special polynomials (associated Legendre and associated Laguerre polynomials) and I was wondering how you go about solving one of these equations (lets just go with the radial equation) from its original equation without using the known Laguerre Polynomial identities.

How you tell if something is absorbing light or if something is emitting it?

Light is interesting in that it can be absorbed by objects or emitted by them. What are some ways you can tell if something is absorbing light or emitting it at the sub atomic level? Why do some objects glow and others reflect?

the video in the description says I am accelerating even though I am sitting perfectly still on the ground. I don't get it. Can someone please explain this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NblR01hHK6U

I don't think I'm accelerating, You need an energy input to accelerate.

the video also says the ground accelerates UPWARDS.

I don't get it. If the ground really did accelerate upwards, dropping an apple here and in china at the same time would cause the earth to accelerate in either direction equally, and the apples would never fall.

please explain me...

Match History? Tell me I'm not paranoid only to stupid to use google properly

Hey guys, So I'm new to HD - and even to steam, I only played some skyrim a couple of years ago. And sth. really creepy happened today. I got stalked and don't know how. A player, who couldn't handle a defeat, didn't only insult me and my mother in all-caps as insert curse words here, no - he also called me a smurf and cheater etc. I don't really mind that person having anger issues and kinda take his insults as appreciation. The creepy thing is, he knew all about my last matches and how many hours I played etc. He even followed me into lobbies and posted my steam-profile there and kept yelling at me in angry capslock. I tried googling it but I didn't find anything like a match history you might know from mobas like LoL. I even tried googling my account and did find only like 10others with similar names. So how did he do it? It would also be good to know if you in general can add people you meet playing as friends via steam. Because some of them really are nice and fun. ;)

For those of you who might be interested what actually happened in the game to make this guy rage this hard and kinda ruin my free day, here's the story:

I used to play casual with friends on gamespy as a teenager back in the days like 13+ years ago and was kinda "good" for a gamespy player (I didn't play zone/voobly so I had no Elo but I knew those guys are way better than us casual gamespy players). I usually played infantry civs like jap/goth/vik/aztec. Today I played a 3v3 green arabia and got vikings (yay!). I was the lowest Elo player in the lobby by about ~70 points. Being new to HD I ofc have low Elo (I don't even know all the new civs yet). But I managed to climb a little already so I'm about 1630 (I also dropped in the 15XX in the beginning). I lost a vill luring boars, got housed once etc. So no great start. But: I was pocket and because I'm really bad at rushing (bf-player) I went 0 military and boomed big after fast castle age. I fast teched champs only (my most practiced build) and raided the enemy pocket player's base with like 30champs while he was busy raiding my flank allies with many knights. MY allies defended well - they resigned. We won (yay again?). Nothing special so far - but then one of the guys started cursing and calling me a **smurf who should die and get cancer, f* myself etc. The usual insults u find with angry internet-kids who prefer blaming some1 else than themselves for losing in a videogame...

So I feel better sharing that experience. And to repeat: I don't mind him insulting me, I played LoL for some years so I'm used to this kind of behaviour, but I'm freaked out how he knew that stuff about my steamaccount ageHD-hours and profile etc. He also said things like "I'm keeping track of you" :(. Thx for reading. Spread some love in the internet not hate <3. ggwp

Edit: I'm also too stupid to write "too stupid" in the title; non-native speaker here

Best post imp strategy for Huns in a 4man FFA?

I am a new player who struggles to keep up with their houses, economy and military at the same time. That is why ] huns are a blessing for me. My economy is actually really good for a player with my ELO(1200ish).

If I play with friends we play a 4 man FFA and most of the time one person gets wrecked by my castle rush, I sent like 8-10 heavy calvarey archers for a rush which succeeds. But once the game gets going I get smacked by another player with anti cavalry units(kills off my paladins and heavy archer army that I have in the imperial age).

Is there any other way to play with huns post imperial age. Please dont say choose another civilization because I really get housed alot because I am a new player I have a hard time with focussing on multipile areas of the map.
