What do I do against a celtic mass siege onagers + heavy scorpion army?

Noob here: 1v1 arabia, I was Teutons and he was Celts. Game was going okay, I was able to m@a+tower rush him with no aggression from my opponent, then turtled my base, boomed and prepared a teutonic knight army.

50 minutes into the game, I discover a huge army of heavy scorpions, siege onagers and some trebs (60 siege units in total). My infantry army was completely useless against them, so I quickly tried to mass some cavalry but they got destroyed almost instantly.

So my question is: Is there anything I can do against a celtic super army of siege weapons?

Finally started to try and get better at the game. Can't choose a civilization.

So, I'm just now starting to learn about Fast Castle and Archer rush strats. I can most of the times beat Moderate difficulty. I can't pick a civ that I like 100%. Here are the traits I like the most:

  • Walls + Towers.

  • Some sort of Eco bonus.

  • Fast and damaging units.

The Civ I play the most with are the Goths, and the only downside is that they lack walls (imo). I really like the Khmer, those elephants wreck everything, but later on they can get really stuck if they lack access to gold (they're pretty expensive).

Any tips? Should I focus on a simple civ like the Britons to learn more about the game?

LudiKRIS size nomad map

So I just played a free for all map against 7 hardest AIs on a ludiKRIS sized nomad map and it was one of the most fun games ever.

I played with Teutons and ended up building a TC on a really good location as there were no AIs around. It was pure luck. Nobody attacked me at all. Most of the AIs were lumped together on the other side of the map and were too busy fighting each other. There were only 3 AIs left when I was ready to attack them.

The best part of the game was that I had to cross a huge totally untouched wilderness to get to the enemy. It was hilarious how long it took, especially with the slow Teutonic knights plodding over the huge map. On top of it, like a half of the map was totally untouched and empty, resources and relics just waiting to be picked up. I ended up collecting more than 50.000 gold without anyone really bothering me. When I finally attacked the fully boomed AIs it was a total bloodshed that lasted for quite a long time. I built castles all around the Hun AI's base and kept sending Teutonic knights like they were trash units because I had so much gold. Eventually, 30 bombard cannons + 15 monks + a swarm of Teutonic knights crushed everything. The long march across the huge map was rewarded.

After installing user patch 1.5 the game asks for cd

The title says it all. I thought when applying userpatch on a no cd patched 1.0c exe, the no cd crack would remain.
But that's not the case on my side.

Has anyone an idea?

Are they active for everyone since the launch of the expansion ? Do you have to enable them when you create a game ? Do you have to buy the expansions to play with the changes ?

Hi All,

I would like to share with you my friends latest pro skill that quite frankly i wish i knew how to record to upload and share, curious if you have tried this yourself or seen it in action.

Most players seem to follow the classic military build order tactics, archer rush or scout rush etc... However being a
philanthropist, he decides to collect as much resource as possible early on and gives the majority of gold away to his opponent ......that's right he gives it away. I'm keen to learn any tips so when I asked him whats going on he explained ' I use the gold as a distraction' . While his opponent was amassing military my friend worked his way in with towers and surrounded their area, he filled the towers with villagers and controlled the entire map. Victory. The incredible part is that he did not make a single military unit!!

I'm a lowly 1600 player and am not fit to shine his 2280 boots :/

Villager micro advice ??

So i was watching the viper the other day and i seen him select a bunch of vils and make a bunch of farms at once like one after another. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to.do that instead of using individual vils creating one farm at a time thanks.

Patch 5.8 Balance Updates

HD beta was just updated and included these additional balance updates!

  • Fire Galleys do 1 damage to fishing ships (reduced from 3)
  • Villagers and towers no longer do reduced damage against walls before Castle Age
  • (Elite) Camel Archers training time +4s (from 21s to 25s)
  • Indians camels no longer receive +1 melee armor bonus
  • Slavic farming bonus is closer to the intended +15% value (multiplier reduced from 1.31 to 1.28)

Changelog hasn't been updated yet as I'm writing this, but all of these changes are available if you update your 5.8 beta on HD!

Guide about micromanagement of melee and ranged units. (Interactions of patrol, formations, stances, etc)

Hello everyone!

After a long time researching for articles and guides about how to maximize the efficiency of unit usage, i found out that the information sources are all incredibly spread, scarce or even dated.

I was wondering if as a community, with the help of the top players, it would be possible to make a compendium of the most important mechanics to know and develop.

Talking about things like:

Stand ground vs aggresive/defensive stance targeting.

Patrols, runners, most efficient manners of engaging (like stacking ranged units with patrol, keeping melee units in tighter formations until almost colliding with stand ground patrol, etc).

Formations advantages and unit groupings depending on amount selected.

Other army mechanics that i am unaware of it's existence. 11

Maybe it's a such a broad subject that's impossible to talk about all of it at once, but having an updated and organized guide might help lots for newer and not so new players!

HD Desync

A bit of a rant, and a bit of a question. It's happened multiple times where a player will intentionally desync the game when my team is winning to avoid losing points. Sometimes the game will tell who the player was that caused the desync. Is there anything I can do to report this, or do I just have to settle for calling the guy a sheep-fucker in the next lobby? Thanks.

Lets talk walls

The map is arabia. Im 1600 and terrible at rm but my dm skills are good and i know my units etc.

I like to drush fc or drush into archers.

How essential are walls? Do you palisade and then stone wall? When do you start walling?

Through scouting you can sometimes see a nice area to wall off, but how far should your walls be from your woodline for example? Am i wasting my time walling 1 or 2 tiles from my vils gathering resources?

Do you seal off your entire base? How many extra vils on wood do you need to wall?

Victory by Wonder - Regicide and Last Man Standing

I've been playing AI opponents increasing my difficulty - and I just lost two rounds - one Regicide and one Last Man Standing to an AI who built a wonder. The victory mode mentions nothing of wonders. I wasted so much time playing assuming this would be a conquest.

Is this correct?

AOE4, when will we get another lifesign?

Since it was announced with the teaser trailer over a year ago there have been literally nothing else about this game. On the one hand they're taking their time with the game, hopefully polishing it as much as they can, which is good, on the other hand, maybe they're getting cold feet after the lukewarm reception of AOE1 HD and the fact that there's really not a market for RTS anymore. What do you think?

Need help with a steam issue

I can't seem to load games on steam after downloading them. I've checked the file integrity, restarted my pc, reinstalled the game and steam but no luck so far. I'm trying to play Rocket League and Age of Empires 2 HD. My specs are : Windows 7 ultimate Antec ATX Tower Case PowerUp 550W ATX-e PSU w/ pci-e 6pin + 6pin adapter ASUS P6T7-WS Workstation LGA1366 x58 Motherboard Intel Xeon L5639 6c/12t 2.13GHz @ 2.65GHz Thermaltake Quad heatpipe cooler w/ adjustable fan control DeepCool Z5 Thermal Paste 12GB Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3-1600 (6*2GB, 2 original kits) 250GB Seagate SATA HD 1TB Seagate SATA HD 2GB HIS IceQ Turbo Radeon HD 6950 SATA DVDRW 120MM Rear Case Exhaust Fan 120MM Side Case Intake fan PCI-E Extreme N Triple Mast Wifi adapter HD Sound Firewire SAS Controller Ethernet

Custom Scenario Ai Suggestions

I recently revamped one of the hun campaign maps, where attila sieges byzantium. I gave attila unlimited resources and a camp, but no villagers. Unfortunately when I play the scenario Attila does nothing. He builds troops, but never patrols around with his army or attacks the cities unless baited by an attack on his camp. I tried this even on the hardest difficulty and still nothing. Is there a way to get him to wake up? If not, is there a good custom ai I can download that will make him get his shit together? Thanks for the help.

Looking at the patch notes for 5.8 beta

Hunting dogs effect no longer appears in games with starting ages later than Dark.

I remember this being in AoM. Not in this?

According to the wiki, it was introduced then removed:

It was available to all civilizations in the Dark Age. When Forgotten Empires was first released Magyars had this research free, but in patch 1.1 this bonus was taken away. As of patch 2.2, Hunting Dogs was removed from the tech tree.

Overview of civs and their best strategies/build orders?

I'm a beginner and after learning the basics of build orders, I've been wondering: When do I use which build order? For example, if I was playing as the Koreans, then a tower rush would be strong, for Huns it's probably scout rush.

Is there an overview of which build orders are commonly used for each civ?

Age of Empires II HD Data mod not working

I have AOE2 HD with all DLC on steam. I can get graphic mods to work but mods that modify data (data mods like triple tech or x256) don't seem to work and their text is colored blue int the steam workshop option in game. Tried reinstalling, unsubscribing, manually deleting the mods but nothing. Anyone have the same problem? How did you solve it? Thanks.

Expansion CBA

So I recently got the AOE expansions on steam. I found some custom maps and I've been really enjoying playing CBA front towers (where you switch between all of the unique units and whichever one you have will constantly spawn for you). I was wondering if there is a custom scenario similar to this concept that uses unique units from all of the expansions, not just up to the Conquerors. Like, does anyone know of a CBA where you can spawn Elephant Archers and Karambits? Cause I'd play the heck outta that.

Hi All,

I would like to share with you my friends food collection tactic and wonder if you have experienced something similar. Most players seem to follow the 6 on sheep 4 wood build order etc. However being a vegetarian he decides to collect all the sheep and pen them in with a wooden palisade wall. When i saw this i asked him whats going on lol in which he responded 'Being a vegetarian i refuse to use the sheep,deer or boar'.I was kind of speechless however I cant argue with him as he is a legend and has a ELO rating knocking on the 2300 mark :/

Anyway with jokes aside, what tactics do you employ guarding your Docks and Fishing Ships? For me, i like to have my fishing traps in a close ordered circle around my dock with some towers right by. To support this i sometimes also place a Castle close and have a few Galleons patrolling. Would be great to hear the groups tips and tactics for protecting your food income via the deep blue sea :)

No sound on steam

I recently bought AoE2 HD version on steam and have only been able to start it twice with the sound, both times after uninstalling and reinstalling. I've tried every fix on the steam community and nothing works. I'm tired of uninstalling and reinstalling and having to wait 25 minutes to start it up every time I want to play, does anyone have a fix for this that works?

Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 3 Week 8: Magyars vs Mayans

Just noticed that these two civs are spelled surprisingly similarly...neat...

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Byzantines vs Malians, and next up is the Magyars vs Mayans!

Magyars: Cavalry civilization

  • Villagers kill wolves in 1 strike cries
  • Forging, Iron Casting, and Blast Furnace free
  • Scout-line costs -15%
  • TEAM BONUS: Foot Archers +2 LoS

  • Unique Unit: Magyar Huszar (Light cavalry unit with bonus vs Siege)

  • Castle Age Unique Tech: Mercenaries (Magyar Huszars no longer cost gold)

  • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Recurve Bow (Cav Archers +1 range, +1 attack)

Mayans: Archer civilization

  • Start with +1 Villager, but -50f
  • Resources last +15% longer, but farmers work ~8% slower
  • Archer-line costs -10/20/30% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
  • TEAM BONUS: Walls cost -50%

  • Unique Unit: Plumed Archer (Fast moving, tanky foot archer)

  • Castle Age Unique Tech: Obsidian Arrows (Archer-line +6 damage to buildings)

  • Imperial Age Unique Tech: El Dorado (Eagle Warriors +40 hp)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

  • Both of these civilizations are considered very powerful for 1v1 Arabia. Do you favor the Mayans and their archer rush, plumes, economy, and eagles; or do you prefer the Magyars and their scout rush, cavalry, and cav archers?
  • ECL stats time! In the Europe East 4v4 stage, the Mayans were THE most picked civilization, being picked 14 total times despite not being in the mandatory civ pool! The Magyars WERE in the civ pool, and were also picked a healthy amount at 11 times. Do you agree with the experts in that Mayans are an absolute top-tier team game civilization, even more so than the Magyars?
  • On Arena, the Mayans are historically considered one of the best civs on that map. How do the Magyars perform against them? They lack a real eco bonus, but have excellent scout play in the mid game and a deadly late game. Is that enough to keep up with the nimble Plumed Archers?

How do I deal with massed organ guns+champs as the Incas?

My go to vs the organ guns would just be to snipe them with light cavalry, but that's not an option to the incas, and the eagle warrior gets shredded by the champions, making it not very cost effective, if at all

Relics should be a little more powerful.

Just did some number-crunching in the editor, and some playtesting.

Am I alone in that I think many of the relics could use a significant boost to their effect?

"The Armour of Achilles" is one such example. It gives a 5% increase to infantry hack armour. It's really kind of meh in that regard. Now, if it gave infantry 10%, then it would become like an extra armoury tech, and therefore very valuable.

Honestly, I can't think of any relic that does NOT need a slight boost in terms of its effects, except "Reed of Nekhbet", but that relic is unavailable, so it's a moot point.

My point is, relics should be worth fighting over. I've seen dozens and dozens of matches where nobody has bothered with relics, even the decent ones like "Nose of the Sphinx" or "Khopesh of Horus". Granted, some are more useful than others, but it would be nice to see some serious fights over powerful relics, and their influence being felt either in defence, economy, or on the battlefield.

2 hour of game... may I have your opinion about this match?

My name is OSTREGHETA there.

As you can see we won. But at the end of the game I was honestly surprised to see my name as the one with the better military score and the most kills. While playing I was feeling pretty depressed, for sure I didn't enjoy play this game, because I was feeling like I was playing bad. Many times I thought "if only I had a better civ"...

Reading the opponent team chat they told I carried my team to victory. I was surprised (and glad) to read that, but seriously I don't think so, I consider myself just a noob and my low ELO prove it.

My question is: can you take a look at the game stats (maybe the record too if you like, maybe at the fastest speed) and tell me if I really carried my team to victory? Can you please tell me if we won because of our merits or because of our opponent lacking? I still can't believe this game

Multiple AI's of varying difficulties

Is there a way to have a game where you fight multiple AIs, but of different difficulties?

For instance, 1 hard, one Moderate?

Also, some of the Hard AI's seem to be bugged in that they aren't upgrading their towers at all. May seem like a trivial issue, but when fighting a "Hard" "Conqueror" AI, I was easily able to just run him over completely due to his total lack of defensive buildings. Sure, I could play a "Protector" or "Defender", but those guys just wall like crazy, instead of producing a sizeable army.

Civ Strategies: Huns

Welcome to week 11 of the Civ Strategies discussion. This week we'll be discussing the good ole AOC king of Arabia: The Huns.

  • What are the Huns' best early, mid, and late game strategies?

  • What strength do you really try to take advantage of when playing this civ?

Some handy civ info:

  • Civ Bonuses:

    • Don't need Houses, but start game with -100 wood

    • Cavalry Archers and Genitours cost 10% less in the Castle Age and 20% less in the Imperial Age. {Changed from 25% cheaper in the Castle Age and 30% in the Imperial Age in AoC, but initial gold cost of Cavalry Archer dropped by 15% from 70 to 60.}

    • Trebuchets are 35% more accurate.

    • Team Bonus: Stables work 20% faster.

  • Unique Techs

    • Marauder (Castle UT: Can Make Tarkans at your Stables.)

    • Atheism (Imperial UT: Adds 100 years to win a relic or wonder victory, and it reduces the cost of Spies by 50%.)

  • Unique Unit: Tarkan (Anti-building/high pierce armor medium cavalry.)

Feel free to throw out anything else you feel may be relevant strategical info regarding the Guns. (Also, any feedback on improving the format of these discussions is very welcome)

(Aom:EE) Is the "Campaign Maker" tab in the editor broken or nit?

As far as I've tried, I was able to string two scenarios into a campaign using the built-in Campaign Maker, but wasn't able to start the first level (immediately getting thrown back to the menu).

Is there some way to make it work, or are there any other methods? Or are there any steps I missed?

What do you guys think of voobly patch 2.0?

Not specifically just 2.0 but all the patches is the game really balanced now?

Can seem to get Steam version of AoE 2 HD to work with Voobly.

I keep getting this error message:

Non-DirectPlay game path is 'c:\program files (x86)\steam\SteamApps\common\Age2HD'
Verifying 'ebueulax.dll' exists...
ebueulax.dll was not found in its proper place.

Your version of the game is not compatible with Voobly.

You must install the most recent 1.0c compatibility pack for Age2HD

Click Yes to have Voobly install the patch for you.

I've installed the patch into the main directory. (Does it go in one of the other folders)?

Why did the Age of Empires has not become an e-sports discipline?

Hello. I'm a big fan of real-time strategy and used to play a lot in the Age of Empires. This is a great game, but it did not become the eSports discipline.

A number of tournaments were held on it. But if you compare the Age of Empires with the cyberscene scene StarCraft, the difference is very large.

I will describe my thoughts, why it happened.

  1. Variety of game sides: there are a lot of game sides in AoE. But all of them differ only in a few unique units and bonuses for the faction. In the SC there are only 3 sides, but each of them is unique: each unit has its own peculiarities, strengths and weaknesses and it does not look like representatives of other parties.

  2. Balance system: taking into account the feature of the troops, the player needs to constantly explore what kind of technology the adversaries have gone and build troops that will defeat his strategy. There are many technologies in AoE. But their development is fairly linear. After studying them, the troops simply become stronger and there is not much significance to what to study.

  3. Map: In AoE, resources are scattered evenly on the map. And usually it is sufficient to develop one large settlement in which it is necessary to develop the collection of resources and the production of troops. The relief of the map almost does not limit the passage of troops. Because of this, the map has quite a few strategic positions that need to be kept. In the SC, reserves of resources are concentrated in certain places and it is necessary to create and develop new bases for their extraction. Their appearance makes us expand the front of combat operations: the player needs to protect the city in different new ones in different parts of the map. The passage to many locations is limited by narrow aisles. In this regard, the retention of these passages is of great tactical importance. A choice of position often determines the outcome of the battle.

And yet I'm a big fan of AoE and the themes of the Middle Ages. I hope that the authors of the new part will be able to develop the experience of the SC and make it into the AoE.

And do you think that will change the mechanics of the game in AoE 4? And do you know other games about the Middle Ages that have a game mechanics similar to the SC?

Top 5 Siege Civs, do you agree with Spirit of the Law Video?

Good day to you all,I do enjoy his videos and who else chuckled with the phrase ' are you getting enough vitamin siege' :) It would be great to hear the groups thoughts on your top siege civs.I must admit in no particular order for me i would have Celts, Teutons, Slavs and Mongols in and around the top slots. Also the Britons with Warwolf is something quite superb. With my style of play i am very content with only Level 2 Onagar and chemistry combo , certainly enough to hold off the enemy at my gates. Do i dare say Britons within the top 5 .........lol

Custom Music on Voobly?

Hey guys, I've been trying to get custom music to work on voobly's version of AoE2, and, evidently, it's not working and I was wondering if there is some definitive tutorial to get this working.

I tried using the userpatch application, as well as manually adding the music by hand. Nothing works :(

Need help portforwarding

Need help portforwarding

Hey guys I really need help trying to port forward this game and hopefully be able to play online with other people. Right now I get a consistent full second or more ping on HD and voobly, which is extremely frustrating. I have tried looking up how to do it and haven't been able to succeed :/ (first time trying to port forward). If anyone could help me figure this out I would be very grateful and happy :). Hotkeys

When setting my custom hotkey, I have "T" as build house, and shift-T as build bbt. If I use my hotkey for economic buildings, then even if I do shift-t, it just registers T. If I click military buildings instead, then shift-t works properly. However, then my walls which are set to "z" hold priority over my shift-z lumbercamps.

Any ideas how I can make this work the way I want it to?

I have an idea for a potentially super fun custom map, but not sure where to start learning how to make a map

I play a good amount of starcraft 2 and there's a really popular custom map called "phantom mode". If you've spent any amount of time in sc2 arcade, you're probably familiar with this.

It's an 8 player map, open-diplomacy, everyone starts out allied with each other. 2 players are randomly chosen to be phantoms, and the other 6 are slayers (normal players). No one knows anyone else's role. Phantoms are alerted who the other phantom is at around 15 minutes in. Players' roles are revealed once they are eliminated. The whole map is revealed to everyone at the beginning, and then alternates day and night every 5ish minutes (night being fog of war, day being completely revealed).

The goal of the slayers are to eliminate the phantoms. The phantoms try to eliminate everyone else. It's basically a 2v6 in favor of the "good" team.

However, phantoms receive extra free resources, which increase as the game progresses. They also have a higher max supply, which increases as well. So at 5 minutes, phantoms might be receiving 3 of each resource per second, and have a 210 supply cap. At 30 minutes, 10 extra resources per second, 300 supply cap, etc. So there's a timer of sorts for the "good" team, since phantoms get increasingly powerful.

As part of the "good" team, you want to be looking out for players who are building up too quickly, have too many production buildings for their supposed income, over 200/200 supply, or are being overly-aggressive. As a phantom, you want to remain innocuous and hopefully encourage slayers to fight each other, until you have a chance to explode onto the map, ideally at night-time when you can cause the most confusion.

There are a few other details and extra quirks that I won't get into, but that's the gist of it.

Anyway, I want to recreate this in Aoe2 because it's hella fun, and the aoe2 community is very open to weird and wonky custom maps. However, after fiddling around in the editor for 45 minutes, I'm realizing that I know jack shit about map creation. The map editor is WAY more intuitive and easy to use than the sc2 counterpart, but I'm worried it may lack the complexity needed to pull off a map like this. There are certain problems I'm foreseeing that I haven't even begun to tackle.

For instance, the score. Is it possible to hide it, or set the scores to the maximum values? The scores would reflect the extra resources that phantoms receive, and would be a dead giveaway.

Randomly assigning roles. Is there a random function built into the editor? If the phantoms were always P2 and P5, players would catch on pretty quick. That brings up additional issues for triggers. If I wanted to do something like "If timer=10:00, phantom receives 10 wood food gold stone per second", how would I assign that trigger to a player if I don't know which player will be the phantom?

So my question is, should I spend a lot of time attempting to create this, or are there certain hurdles that just won't be possible in the map editor? Are there any resources (youtube videos/series, tutorials, etc) that will be helpful for me? If you have any experience with map creation, how did you get started? Was there a corner of the internet that was particularly helpful for you? Point me in the right direction.
