I started playing Germany recently.
I notice that in long drawn out games, when I pour out only war wagons (fully upgraded), I have a very high kill to death ratio. Its always more than 2-1; often close to 3-1.
So when you have a strong eco to support, is it cost effective in the long run to simple pour out war wagons if you're too busy to micro every battle?
So i got this problem when my game says "unresponsive players" arround 20min into every game I play. The tabs that comes up contains everyone in the game with a timer counting down as it does when someone lags out but it happens to everyone. The problem is that I am the one crashing after it countsdown and theres nothing i can do about it. I been looking for help on yt and google but cant find anything so im asking you guys if you have any knowledge about this problem, thanks

This is NOT a civilization discussion, this is more of unit concept discussion.
So suppose the devs decided that in the next expansion, they wanted to add Mississippians and Iroquois as playable civilizations (which does make sense, as these civs does exist during the AoE2 timeframe even though the Iroquois only played a major role in history around 17th to 18th centuries, which is around the AoE3 timeframe). These two civilizations would probably be grouped under a different civ archetechture type to make them more distinct from the Mesoamerican civilization. Giving cavalry units like the scout line will make zero sense since the Native American civs didn't utilize horses until the Europeans brought them in (and only played a major role for the Native Americans in the 17th and 18th centuries). Giving Eagle Scout line also makes no sense because this is a scout line exclusive to the Mesoamerican civs.
So suppose the devs decided to add the Iroquois and Mississippians into the game in a potential next expansion. Do you think these two civilizations should have their own unique scout unit to distinguish themselves from the Mesoamerican civs, or should they still be given the Eagle Scout line despite how out of place that kind of unit would be for these two civs?
As for my civ concepts for them, I do have some ideas for both of them, but they are really unique that would stand out differently from the other civilizations. The Mississippians will be defensive oriented civilization where you cannot be build Stone Wall and utilize Palisade Walls (don't worry, they'll have a civ bonus that increases the HP for their Pallisade Walls) while my Iroquois civ concept for AoE2 will resemble that of how the Iroquois were designed in AoE3 (being a siege/foot archer civilization, they obviously not going to have cavalry units, but they will have Hand Cannoneers and Bombard Cannon to reflect on the Iroquois trade with the Europeans and their relevance in the AoE3 timeframe).
Anyways, share your thoughts, if Iroquois/Mississippians were included as playable civs in AoE2, should they be given their own unique scout unit to distinguish themselves from the Meso civs and other civs, or do you think the Eagle Scout line would suffice?
Well since the Mongol hunting bonus is useful only in random match games and not in death match games, i think we need a tech which is good on both.
So what can we replace this bonus with ?????????? Any ideas ????????
/s
Well since the Paper money tech is useful only in team games and not in single games, i think we need a tech which is good on both.
So what can we replace this tech with ?? Any ideas ??
There's the Tibetans, Thai, Manchus, and Afghans.
I think each is distinct enough to warrant a civilization. I have a fully thought out tech tree and strategy for each.
I genuinely believe if a new expansion was made, these would make awesome civs. And there'd be the cool universal theme of rising, especially with Tibet and Manchuria.
Lately there's been a new thing in hd where it desyncs instantly as soon as the game starts even if all pings are green. Anyone else experiencing this?
Do the developers have a clue how to do anything? Sigh
Most ever kills in an aoe game, that i can remember,

Purple/pink - radioactive - Turks (pocket)
teal - dedup - Malians

I want to have my screen follow a unit around passively. How would I go about doing this? I want to follow the unit around automatically just like you can in RCT or OTTD.
One way to do it is to add the unit to a control group and then holding that group number button in and the screen will sort of "follow" the unit around in a twitching way, but it will also make the unit(s) hail continuously as a response. The unit is also selected if doing it this way and I would much rather have the screen follow the unit around without a selection.
Can it be done with map scripting? I have programming and scripting experience but I've never touched or looked into AoE2 map making.
PS: I'm using AoE2:HD

That darn Cmake is giving me problems again. Does this even work on windows? I am super stoked about openage BTW.
The Chinese tutorial starts off fine, describing the gameplay element of the Garden building. However, when the Immortals are showcased fighting some soldiers and a White Tiger, the battles take forever before the Immortals eventually win. Why is that?
Well, it turns out the player with the Immortals start in the Archaic Age, in which Immortals (as most heroes) start off with the low, low damage value of 1. So despite the enemies health being modified to be lower than usual, a fight would take well near a minute to watch. The only reason the Immortals could win any of them is because their health had been boosted to over a thousand.
As a test, I advanced the player to the Mythic Age, in which the Immortals had exactly 12 Hack attack, and surely, they tore the enemies completely apart.
I'm not sure how such an oversight came to be, but ah well.
I have the EE steam version, none of my friends play this game

hi guys is it possible to create untrainable units in aoe2 scenario by using triggers, if so how?
like if i could train Nordic Swordsman in barracks?
Paper is made from wood. The game should reflect that.
How does costing food make sense?

Hey, i'm not sure if this has already been asked or not, or if i have just missed it, but what is the expected performance of openage?
One of the things that most dissapoints me about aoe2 is the slowdown in big games and as someone who is pretty passionate about program optimization it irks me to know that most of that is due to outdated code not using the available hardware.
So, what is the expected performance of Openage? How about mutithreading and scaling over many CPU cores? i am aware it may be too early to ask this question but anything you can give me would be much appreciated.
PS: In case someone gives the "we are open source come optimize it yourself" response, after the next 3 months i expect to have some more time on my hands and i would love to start helping with this project, aoe has been a big part of my gaming life and i would love to be a part of making it better than ever.
Thankyou :)
I want to play the WK expansions, but I don't want to spend 40€ on it. If i just bought the expansions and not the original game, would it work?
just found this map and from the description it looks like it's referenced as just a default map. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSrbolwvLN0 But in the steam version of the game it's not under real world maps. I tried to look for a download on the steam workshop but found nothing.
Looks really fun and i want to play it.
Elite Skirmishers are a whole lot less useful than the other trash units in a trash war. Imperial Skirmishers should be available for some/all civs, with the Vietnamese Team Bonus becoming a buff to them instead.
This is pretty frustrating, especially when it is no fault of your own. Is this a bug or always been the case?

3 of the last 4 games 1v1s that I've played, I've been flamed with "get rekt, NOOB NOOB" and "11" spam. The last one my opponent sarted the spam at 10 minutes with "epic fail, 11, 11, 11, gtfo, 11, 11" and so on.
I play mostly TGs, and can't recall this behaviour on any other match (only 1v1s)
Is this something about low-elo players that just like to bash on the few players they can beat? it's the same on voobly?
I'm 1650~1700 on steam if it matters
I think we can easily rule out which players are not TheViper based on which tree are villagers chopping after making Lumber Camp(TheViper chops tree directly behind Lumber Camp). I remembered this during HiddenCup7 vs HiddenCup10 and i am 99% sure both of them are not TheViper and it was bugging me when people were saying one of them was TheViper.

My drush kicks in after about 13 minutes, meanwhile I have 6 idle villagers from berries. I have a fat bank of about 600 resources, oh and now my militia are dead.
Maybe it would need additional rules, not attacking until few trees are standing or something like that. lol

The god just seems to be too versatile and good at everything. Can be aggro due to fast booms, which boom hard, has one of the best late games, etc. It seems like everytime I'm playing an online match, the team with Isis (or the better one) wins.

Hey all,
My friend and I are playing Regicide co-op trying to do real life wars with the civilizations in AOE 2. We also want to use the Real World map type, just to try to pretend to be a little more realistic.
So far, we haven’t exactly been historically accurate, but we’ve done Byzantines vs. Turks, Japanese vs. Chinese, Koreans vs. Japanese, and Spanish vs. Aztecs.
Anyone got any suggestions? PS we have the expansions.
Thanks!
Here is the situation. We played a 4v4 BF game.
My flank from minute 8 started to spam the 6 taunts, because he wanted stone. He spammed 6 again around minute 13 and 16. Around minute 18 he went castle and he ask stone again. I say him I can't give him stone because I needed it to make TCs and the other pocket told him he doesn't have stone anymore... and guess what? he resign. 4 v 3 we lost the game.
After the game I've started a chat with him. He told me he needed help with stone, because his main gold and stone was spawned near the opponent flank so he had to buid a tower asap becuase he didn't want to lose his main gold and stone due to a possible opponent tower. In the same time, a tower was good to deny a stock of gold to his opponent flank that was spawned ahead as well. but at that point he didn't had the stone anymore to build TCs and he would have been left behind for the rest of the game. I told him why he didn't use the market, and he told me with his gold at that minute he could only buy 100 stone and with that stone was not enough, because he also needed some stone to end walling the choke point.
Now my question is: who is wrong, in your opinion?
I have a really cheap, bottom shelf laptop, but normal AoM TT runs just fine with low settings and doesn't lag on big ffa's. Then there is the Extended Edition and it makes even 2v2 games really laggy. 1v1 is fine-ish, it's still slow, but bareable. I put everything on the lowest settings possible, and disabled recording games, yet it still shows the red turtle next to my nick on online games. Anything I can do? I remember the good old times when I played big 12 way ffas on The Titans on my old PC, and even that wouldn't lag.
Is there a place I can see what AOE2 gameplay looks like with different screen resolutions? What's the minimum I should look for as I go laptop shopping?
It's something i've been wondering about. Not exactly the beginning period, more the ending period due to the interaction of gunpowder in a lot of civs
Sorry for the cringy title i truly didn't know how else to phrase it.
I am a SC & SC2 lover and veteran i would like to think and when i heard my buddies wanted to play AOE my childhood just flashes before my eyes and i had to say im in.
However when i played i was but a wee lad so i barely remember anything about AOE. What are some good youtube channels , tips , tricks and "meta" strategies you guys can recommend for me to explore to get up to the RTS level i feel like i can perform on. I really hope some of my SC skills can translate but by looking at it the games are quite different in terms of PvP.
Please help me out! Cheers guys.
PS: we would be playing forgotten empires expansion.

Long story short, I just got blasted by Malian trash. My question is, how do I prevent that from happening?
Because Malian infantry get insane pierce armor, I felt my best bet against them was to use battle elephants, who deal melee damage. He tried using Champskarls at first, and the elephants were relatively successful. The problems started when he switched to spamming pikeman.
I got destroyed by an army almost completely of pikeman and Trebs. Obviously, my battle elephants were not cost-effective options against his pikeman. I tried using arbalests (big mistake) because I underestimated the power of the pierce armor bonus and thought they would deal better with Farimba cavs than hand cannoneers; hand cannoneers are also affected by pierce armor. Not ideal.
If the right answer is teching into champions, that means I will be chasing him the entire game, as Khmer lack squires. Worse than that, my army composition of Battle Elephants and Champions is a huge gold drain compared to Pikeman and Champion, so even if I were to pin him to a spot on the map, the war of attrition is greatly in his favor.
This, by the way, was a 3v3, so reaching Imperial was extremely likely. We were both pockets and the strongest players on our team. Help plz.
...In the case your deer is not close enough. You get more than 300 food at least. Now, the problem is the 100 wood investment, but deer collection rate is slightly faster than farms, and with a close mill you don't have to use 4 villagers if you don't need to (in order to avoid a second trip).
Asking everyone to take a humbling moment and list some "accomplishments" from their own AoE2 playing history that they really thought were impressive at the time, but by comparison to where they are now, seem really, really minor/embarrassing things to take pride in.
I'll list two for myself, based upon my long history of playing single player or comp stomp games (with human allies) vs. the AI:
LOL. Anyway, feel free to share.
I have made many posts about me struggling against the AI on moderate. Many asked for a recording so here you go !
Please point out my mistakes !
Mistakes which ik i made
1) Accidentally making a 7th villager gather sheep 2) Sending a villager to wood by mistake, then backtracking to build a house.

Made the switch to voobly not long ago and noticed the games are equipped with anti-cheat software. That made me wonder what cheats they are referring to since you are given control of enabling the built in cheats in the lobby. What cheats are there for this game other than the built in ones?
My friends play with high resource starts, I still do standard build orders. How much faster could I be aging up while still having a strong eco?
Try this: u send landgrab as china, ur british mate sends team faster building speed for houses. u can instantly place villages as china on the map without even building them. place a village behind ur enemies in a treatygame and ship 21 pikes or French consulate army. destroy their factories watch them call u cheater and resign.
Or you can do this to take any island you want in water maps by shipping refugee cards to send villagers and using Confucius gift can also make your armies come to the villages faster.
Ive done crazy strategies before like revolting as ottomans in 9 minutes to turtling on the tiny island on Honshu to burning down the enemies Town center in 4 mins with the iro warchief but this one is the craziest of all .
anyways add me bros

So I just spent like 40 euros on steam for this (1999) game in order to play it with my gf mostly against the AI.
We played for a few hours and decided to save the game and call it a day. However to my surprise when I tried to restore the game it kept crashing... After a short google search it turned out that this is a known bug that hasn't been fixed for more than a year now?! My surprise was even bigger keeping in mind that we had been playing both the original AOE2 and a pirated AOE2 HD version as well and in both of them saving/restoring worked fine in multiplayer.
Is there any official information about this being fixed in the near future? Also I have heard of some user patch/mod called Wololo kingdoms that people use to play online. Does saving/restoring multiplayer games work using it?
tbh i’m not a huge fan of the titans and i much prefer AoM pre-titans. I could buy a copy of the original and play that but the Steam version is more convenient so far.
Is there way to get rid of the titans somehow? Or am I stuck with them on Steam.
I've been bathing in nostalgia the last few days and watching a bunch of commentated games... I last played when I was a kid but feel I was fairly decent and knowledgeable. Here is something I don't understand though: Why do people build more than one armory? Why do people place them in forward attack outposts? I really don't see any reason.
I am trying to create houses that generate gold, but drain food.
With absolutely zero documentation available, I tried to give the house task 151 - copied directly from Feitoria. No effect.
I tried to match all sorts of values from Feitoria to House, workrate, resource capacity, etc. all to no effect.
I even copied Feitoria directly into a new building unit, changed the IDs for everything, and that still worked, so its not hardcoded.
I suspect some background magic going on the background much like unit regen uses attributes 40 and 45 to achieve that. Anyone have any idea?
I played Egyptian (usually set or Isis) or Greek (mostly Hades and Zeus) and just had a great time as a kid. Now that I purchased the new steam version of the game (dragon something?) with titans and Asian civs I’m completely lost as to how to play the game.
In addition, I don’t think I ever knew how to play the game as a kid. Any tips?
Today I joined a 4v4 game...
After 10 seconds one of my teammate drop. We told the opponent team to save & exit, but a couple of them didn't agree and choose to continue. One of them, a latino, also told me "Me importa una tula".
And well... this is what happened to him next: https://i.imgur.com/HbjLJaA.jpg
Basically, a teammate told me that cheats were unable (I didn't know)... and I had no second think how to fullfill my revenge
I'd like to get better at executing more aggressive 1 TC plays on Arabia, at the moment I usually always add a TC or two soon after reaching castle as and when I can afford it.
So, when should I think about going 1 TC?
Tips for pulling it off, when is it not viable?
For context I am 1650+ on voobly.
does anybody select the save folder and save games from the past disappear anytime you log on and off?
Hey it's that thing I actually study IRL!
Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Huns vs Incas, and next up is the Chinese vs Koreans!
Chinese: Archer Defensive civilization
TEAM BONUS: Farms +45f
Unique Unit: Chu Ko Nu (Foot archer that fires multiple arrows per volley)
Castle Age Unique Tech: Great Wall (Walls and Towers +30% hp)
Imperial Age Unique Tech: Rocketry (Chu Ko Nu +2 attack; Scorpions +4 attack)
Koreans: Tower and Naval civilization
TEAM BONUS: Mangonels have reduced minimum range
Unique Unit: War Wagon (Tanky, expensive, powerful cav archer)
Unique Unit: Turtle Ship (Immensely powerful, but slow and expensive, ironclad cannon-firing ship)
Castle Age Unique Tech: Panokseon (Turtle Ships move +15% faster)
Imperial Age Unique Tech: Shinkichon (Onager-line +1 range)
Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!
Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Aztecs vs Italians. Hope to see you there! :)
Yeah, title says it all. Also is spamming galleons a good tactic?
I just remembered that this AoE2 themed game was supposed to be coming out sometime this year and looked it up on Steam. I'm rather disappointed right now :/
It doesn't really make any logical sense for your archers to magically get crossbows when they're deep behind enemy woodlines. What if upgrades, both the kind that simply upgrade stats and the kind that change the unit entirely, only affected new units made? How would this affect the metagame? What civs would benefit and lose the most from this?
Is there a way to give yourself a custom name in a scenario? Even though it works fine for AI civilisations, entering something into the 'Tribe Name' bar doesn't do anything for me.
I have a friend who was a hardcore player when AoK first came out, but never played the expansions. When he heard that I'm playing AoE II, he challenged me to play sometime.
He wants to play on his home turf, i.e. Age of Kings. Does anyone know how we could go about playing AoK?
I’m not sure it’s be broken, but where is your thumb ring now?!
Would it be good?
