Are wonder victories lame?

I'm new to aoe online gaming, I just started playing a couple of days ago. I noticed that in no game I have placed so far people have attempted to win by building a wonder. Personally, I welcome that, because I don't find it satisfactory to win by or lose against a wonder myself.

The reason why I'm asking, however, is that I just played a black forest 1v1, and my opponent - besides from calling me a "hijo de puta" right from the beginning - decided that it might be fun to hide behind like 15 rows of fully upgraded stone walls. Since I was huns, I didn't really have the chance to effectively cut through the forest (did I?), and so I decided to force my enemy to act somehow, and I built a wonder. He still didn't act though: he built a wonder himself, then noticed that mine was finished earlier and resigned.

So in this case, I wasn't feeling bad at all for building the wonder. But it made me thinking and I was wondering if it is like some unsaid agreement that this is forbidden or so?
