How to properly micro your units in multiplayer games if there is delay?

As above, how do you people can micro properly? My units always take 1-3 seconds to do what I ask them to do because of delay/lag... I could adapt to the delay but because the range of the delay is pretty large and random usually adapting is wrong anyway.
