Old player of AoM looking to get into AoE2

First RTS game I ever bought was Age of mythology and I still play it today on Steam even though it's full of bugs. I played a little bit of AoE in my youth, but not much. Don't know a whole lot about Age of Empires Two but I'm really liking the graphics and mechanics. Where do I start with this game? Is multiplayer buggy and crashes a lot? Do people still play custom scenarios? Will I get my ass handed to me if I dive into multiplayer? Any and all information is appreciated, thanks.
