I just came across this reddit thread and have had no idea of its existence. I browsed through some posts, and I realized that none of them referred to the very first version of AOE, debuted in 1997. Seems like this AOE version has fallen into oblivion. Guess what - that's not really the case. In Vietnam and China, there are active communities that are still playing this game every day. AOE matches are streamed over Facebook Gaming platform, and at peak there are roughly 76k people joining in 1 livestream of an AOE match. The most popular professional AOE gamer is Nguyen Duc Binh, commonly known by his nickname 'Chim Sẻ Đi Nắng'. There are around 10 professional AOE teams in Vietnam, spreading across all regions of the country, and countless other non-professional ones. Many tournaments and competitions are held annually, targeting both the professionals and the amateurs.

I'm personally a fan of this game, and this particular version of the game. Of course it's nowhere near as good as other PC and online games in terms of graphics as it has been rendered unsupported by Microsoft a long time ago; however, that's what make this game special imo.

This is Chim Sẻ Đi Nắng. As said, he is a very popular figure in the gaming community in Vietnam.
