Are there still lots of people who signed up but never got invited to join the Beta?

I remember hearing at one point that everyone who signed up for the beta will eventually be in the beta. Is that true? I signed up a LONG time ago and still haven't gotten an invite. I'm leaning towards not buying DE because of it. I am suspicious that my specs aren't preferred for the beta test or something, because my laptop might not run it well enough to get a good showing. In which case, why would I buy the game?
