i need help not being so trash at this game

so i am new to RTS and aoe2 completely. my friend got me to play this game and he already has 200 hours in it. im following build orders and i can never beat him. all he does is make cav archers and i cant win, i tried looking up counters to them like elite schirmishers but i think im not executing them correctly or there is a something im not getting in this game. i really want to improve to beat my friend but i cant beat him even though ive played my friend a ton. even though hes doing the same cav archer rush strategy. is this an appropriate place to post this or should i of posted this in a aoe2 discord? thank u so much for reading and sorry if my noob-ness in play offends anybody. just seeking to learn and get good at this game. im welcome to all advice from big to small things i should focus on improving.
