Versatile civ for "new" player?

I'm looking for a civ that's versatile enough to teach me different playstyles and friendly enough for new players, it doesn't need to be a top tier, just good enough to learn the basics. I've watched a lot of AoE and played through some of the art of war scenarios, although I haven't managed to get gold in every one of them.
