I guess pros do it to save resources but it looks just silly and kind of annoys me. It's not hard to to either, or something you could consider a advanced skill.
Is this still a thing in DE? They should just make the pillars part of the wall, so it is only a visual thing. Or the pillars should be free as long as they are connected to a wall.
Also walling across trading routes should be possible with a gate obviously.
