I was looking at Leather Cannons vs. Jaegers, and then ended up looking at the base Skirmisher, and now I'm not understanding some of the strategy advice I've seen; the wiki/etc. recomends them for their low population use... but they're less than twice as good as fully upgraded Skirms, for twice the population and almost twice the price
Stats for fully upgraded Dutch Skirms (I used Dutch since they can ship Jaegers for testing and don't have Royal Guard Skirms), including all advanced arsenal upgrades but no cards (since most don't effect Jaegers) are 252 HP, .30 ranged resist, 32 attack, 25 siege, and 12 hand attack. 1 pop and 50f 65g.
Jaegers, with the Mercenary age V politician boosting them, have 400 HP, .40 ranged resist, 49 attack, 29 siege, and 24 hand attack. Both units have the same range, fire rate, speed, and attack bonuses, so I've omitted them. 2 pop and 200g.
This means a Jaeger has 666 effective HP vs ranged, while Skirms have 360 effective. So Jaegers are 1.85x as tanky (worse vs. melee), and have ~1.6x the offense (even worse for siege, but 2x in melee), but take up 2x the population, and, when recruitable at the saloon, cost ~1.73x as much (200 total resources vs. 115 total).
To me it seems like this means that 2 Imp Skirmishers should be better than 1 Jaeger; significantly more attack and can take more non-splash damage, are less likely to overkill, and only cost a little bit more, for the same population. Am I missing something? What is it that makes Jaegers more efficient than Skirms?
