Why do I have to play a map that I don't want just because 1 of 8 dudes in my TG thought "I like this" - This is neither democratic nor capitalistic. The Lobby Browser is the incarnation of these ideals.
Lobbies with maps nobody wants to play have fewer players, maps everyone likes has more players. Every player gets a vote by just joining lobbies with maps he likes. Water maps don't find many fans because there is no depth to it, a 3 units Triangle (that's really just Galleys or UU Ship with forcefully civ picking cause land civs on water is more of a loss than water civs on a land map) seems (based on playrate statistics) less appealing for players than land units - and so shall it be.
And that doesn't mean that those who like Island don't get games going. I am comfortable in saying that DE has so many players that everyone gets a piece of the cake, Afterall it doesn't matter if there are 10000 arabia players when there are 100 which are ok with island, keep in mind you "only" need 8 players of the somewhat same skill level to get a 4v4. Heck you would arguably only need 4-6 island fans, then most players looking for a game will see the 6/8 and join for a quick game start - even tho Island is only "ok" for them.
The issue with the Alt+f4 punishment is that it's not thought through. For 18 Years this game had a Lobby System in which players could play the maps they liked. Unpopular maps are not meant to be praised and be given a chance - they are unpopular for a reason.
It's the same civ with civ picking. Apparently, they were unhappy how, back then, only one person needed to disable Random Civ Option in order to prevent all random civ, so they logically made it a majority vote, however with map picks not? 1 Player decides the map of 8 others? This is a contradiction on the devs end.
The only way to enforce that (with a Matchmaking system) is simple: Allow unlimited map bans, and add an Alt F4 punishment.
So either next patch has unlimited map bans or this is the worst change regarding matchmaking ever made + people will just resign at minute 0 - cause, if it exists, the rule enforcement team is nowhere big enough to handle the reports
P.s I hate the hyprocracy of players who say "But you need to be able to play a large variety of maps to be good @ the game" - while they pick the same/strongest civ, playing the same build order every game
