Hi all! When we talk about “Jack of all trades” civs, we are often referring to versatile civs, with many late game army or counter-army compositions that make those civs a bit more unpredictable to defend against and more difficult to attack. This concept is the total opposite of "One Trick Pony" civs, which are strongly oriented towards mainly one army composition, which is usually very strong (OP!). While Jack of all trades civs give us more options, One Trick Ponies are more predictable. The biggest drawback for Jack of all trades civs comes when decision making, because a bad army comp can ruin us the game. In order to quantify which civs are Jack of all trades and which ones are One Trick Ponies, I took all Tech trees and gave them 1 point for each of these categories: Archers: Features Arbalester – Features Hand Cannoneer – Features a viable Heavy Cavalry Archer (only misses 1 tech at most but never Thumb Ring) – Features a Unique Unit or Bonus that enables another option. Infantry: Features a viable Champion/Two-Handed Swordsman (can’t miss Supplies and/or last infantry armor, except Goths) – Features a viable Halberdier/Pikeman (can’t miss last infantry armor and generic FU Pikemen are not counted, except Goths) – Features Eagles – Features a Unique Unit or Bonus that enables another option. Cavalry: Features a viable Hussar/Light Cav (can’t miss last cavalry armor and Bloodlines) – Features a viable Paladin/Cavalier (can’t miss last cavalry armor and Bloodlines, except Celts) – Features Heavy/Imperial Camel – Features Battle Elephant – Features a Unique Unit or Bonus that enables another option. Siege: Features Siege Ram (or Capped Ram with bonus) – Features Onager – Features Heavy Scorpion (or Scorpion with bonus) – Features Bombard Cannon – Features a bonus for Trebuchets – Features a Unique Unit. Monks: Features a Monastery with less than 2 Monk technologies missing. Extra: Features a bonus that makes different army production viable (Aztecs: Carry capacity + Faster unit production; Chinese: Tech discount; Vikings: Free Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart) The results of all points given to each civ are shown in the image below: I know I applied my own personal criteria to do the rankings, but, do you agree with the results? What do you think? Let me know with your comments! Have a nice weekend! [link] [comments] |
