Noob in need of a teacher/sensei

I saw some videos about AOEII Hd and that the community is still really big (10k players per day) And in my youth AOE 2 was one of my very first games which mich dad bought for me. I recently bought it during a Steam sale and want to get into it but im completely Lost. Which Civ should i try to become familiar with as a beginner? When to I tech up? I need to learn pretty much all the basics. If anyone is willing to help I´d really appreciate it. Either via Text or voice chat (I speak german as my mother tongue and English fluently, tho sometimes with a little problem on the TH)

A Noob wishlist for AoE2:DE

I'm gonna used the hype around AoE DE to get the things I wish from AoE2 DE out there. As the title says I'm a noob so the majority of this is purely cosmetic and also my personal preference.

1) Female berserk: this was in the news recently. It would be like villagers, a random chance of getting female or male Viking warriors, no difference other than appearance. source: https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/09/viking-warrior-woman-archaeology-spd/

2) regional basic units: the new voobly monks are a perfect example, but take it further. Regional militia line, archers, knights, everything. The hard thing with this is that everything should be easy to recognize but I think it would be so cool.

3) walls that are easier to build and destroy: I'm not sure if this is a engine limit but having to delete walls one segment at a time is bull***t, building walls can also improve but I think deleting is the worst part.

4) Way more architecture: basically something like the "WK architectures showcase" but official. The hardest part of this is making everything coherent. The Official magyar architecture and the "magyar buildings fix" from the steam workshop is a perfect example of architecture that doesn't fit and one that does. The fix make every thing prettier but that really important thing is the size of the building fits better with every other architecture, magyar feudal houses are huge (rant over).

5) Attack move that actually works: the steam release tried to make one but it is better to patrol every time. I would love to have a attack move command that is basically the patrol but when you get where you click your units stops.

6) most popular mods all ready included: Like the WK installer options; the grid, smalls trees, shortwalls as game options. Ideally being able to be toggle on/off from in game menu.

-slightly controversial things-

7) multi-queue by default(and possibly the only option): this would make every noob life easier and if you already are use to single queue it doesn't change anything for you, but hey, to each there own.

8) Condos that are gun powder resistant not anti-infantry resistant: (this list was made before 5.7, i'm gonna leave this any way cause i'm so happy this is a real thing now 11)

Those are all the ideas I have think about since the announcement of AoE2 DE but there are probably some great ideas that did not came to me so comment away. I would also like to know what more experience players think AoE2 DE should include

Starting a new Multi-game Community including AOE3

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings.   • Oof this looks like a rough one for Franks. Can the stronger Frankish early game be enough to forestall the onslaught of cheap Berber camels?
  • Is it still worth it to produce lots of knights as Franks if you see your Berber opponent teching into fast Camel Archers?
  • Do Throwing Axemen have a viable role in this match up? How about Genitours?

I have played the beta now about 3 hours now. It really does look wonderful. I just wish they had incorporated reseeding. My #2 request would be units moving in formation. I will play this game but am no longer very excited without these 2 improvements

Had a Great First Experience

So after reading all of the negativety that has been floating around I went in to playing AoE DE with the lowest possible expectations. And tbh I had none of the issues everyone else has mentioned. The gameplay was smooth and the graphics looked solid. The only real thing lacking was my apm because not having auto queue farms makes it a lot harder to keep 100 vils occupied.

Overall I was very happy very happy with the experience and plan on buying it on release.

Need help with Age of Empires 3 animation

I'm playing around with all the files in my AOE 3 game, teaching myself to mod and such, but I seem to have gotten myself stuck on a rather daunting task.

See my goal was to allow monkeys, or the Lion tailed macaque in this specific instance to build buildings. That I have had success with, but I can't seem to allow the macaque to have it's attack animation run while doing so.

I've edited the .tactics as well as the lion tailed macaque anim.xml appropriately, but to no avail. The macaque still just stands still or does one of it's many other idle/bored animations instead while contructing the building.

I have the <anim> set to the correct file location and everything. Is there some sort of attack animation physics that are preventing my from allowing that animation to play or?

How to deal with online lag and input delay?

Hello everyone. Recetly i have been playing more and more games where the other player has a wonderfull yellow or red circle. Which would result in massive input lag. Even performing the basic of tasks of scouting or force dropping food would result in a massive fail. Where as my opponet would seem to function just fine looking at my demos. should i just power my way through and try to get used to it, or just call early geeg. I understand the game has an audience that spans across the globe, but sometimes i wish i never had to deal with the lag. Also doesnt help not alot of american players play on vooby wolokingdoms. For those wondering, i am running on a pretty beefy laptop, with a wired university connection. Im in westernish usa, while playing on latest user patch on voobly with wololokingdoms. I have found a fool proof way of reaching 2K rating on HD

Basically what you do is a standard fast feudal build that plays to the strengths of your respective civ. Archers for britons, scouts for franks, men-at-arms for Japanese, etc.

Advancing to feudal age send 5 villagers with 3 militia to the enemies base assuming it's not a water map. Have 2 villagers mining stone that were moved from berries and basically just start towering and fighting the enemy. Get men-at-arms if you still have healthy militia in feudal age and skip all eco upgrades, just keep minimum vill production and start queuing spear men, archers, scouts, skirms to the enemies base.

Even if your build sucks this strategy can take down most 2K- players on HD just by the craziness and amount of pressure.

You will lose occasionally if the enemy stone walls but your wins will off-set this and you should reach 2K in no time.

The AI in AoE #makeresonancebotsgreatagain

While playing against the resoancebot on the old aoe2 version I yet again had to ask myself the question how one person can create an AI so much superior to the AI of a whole team! An AI that took down the Viper 2 times in the last weeks! Sometimes it just seems that one guy knows the meta of the game more than the entire team behind AoE. I ask one thing of you AoE2 if you won't give us an comparable AI than please don't destroy the actual Ai! Sadly it's probably too late as Resonance22 had to announce that the work put in the AI isn't worth it because of the patches and without support for the work. So I demand #makeresoanancebots great again! Spam it support it and show the creator some love who knows what we want a challenging AI, which isn't defeated after 5min in feudal that reacts to the player and fires back! Better do it if you don't want to miss out on future tyrant_theviper vs Resonancebots defeats!

Suspicious of Cheating!!

Hi everyone! I'm writing this because of a game I just played 20 minutes ago (on Voobly). I was Zeus and my opponent was Ra, and the map was Marsh. I did my usual tactic of attempting to gold-starve him, of which I was successful, but later on in the game, I realized there was a gold-mine I didn't see beside his base which even he was not aware of.

Why do I think he was cheating?

During and after the game, I did not actually suspect that he was cheating because Ra has an insane economy. However, upon looking at the post-game statistics, I was alarmed by the fact that in a 1 minute time span (15:38 to 16:38 to be exact), his gold gathering rate was ridiculous (while at other times, it was not). By this, I mean that in exactly 1 minute, he had an income of 4,837 gold, while I had an income of only 622 gold. That's almost 8 times more than me!

I looked at the replay and saw that in that 1 minute time span, he had 8 villagers on gold and I had 20 villagers on gold. I had twice as many villagers as him on gold and he had 8 times more gold income than me? Really? (And yes, we both had the same eco upgrade of shaft mine and he had no trade route)

Is there any logical explanation to this? Is it possible to have an income of 5000 gold in 1 minute with 8 villagers and without a trade route?

I’ve put up 2 pictures, one showing his total gold and another showing his total resources. So yeah, even if he did trade wood and food for all that gold, I’d expect his growth of total resources to be a little less. But no the stats show that even his total resources are extremely high in that 1 minute.

TLDR:

I was alarmed that in one 1-minute time frame, my opponent with 8 villagers on gold had 80 gold/s and I, with 20 gold villagers had 10 gold/s.

Villagers in wood requiered for maintain farms (A deep analysis)

Hi Guys

A few days ago I was wondering how many exact villagers I need in wood for maintain a certain number of farms. So (as an engineering student) I set myself the objective of making the corresponding calculations considering (or not) the economic upgrades corresponding to each age and I would like to share it with you

These values are optimal, so the travel time between the resource and the building where it is deposited is not taken into account. This travel time may be negligible with the corresponding micromanagement. It should be noted that all these values were tested within the game with very positive results.

The first two tables were made to arrive at the final calculation and the third table is the one that contains the final conclusion.

I will show you the correct way to read that table. So, How many farms can I maintain with 1 villager in wood?

  • For example, if I'm in Dark Age (No Wood and No Farm upgrades) I can maintain 3 farms (3.432 but we need to round down) with one villager in wood.

  • If I have Bow Saw (Castle Upgrade) but only have Wheelbarrow and Horse Collar (Feudal Upgrades) then I can maintain 6 farms (6.149 but we need to round down) with one villager in wood

The values in GREEN are the optimal for each age, for example, if we have all the Castle Age upgrades we can maintain 8 farms with 1 villager in Wood.

Another way to read this table:

If we need, for example, 15 farms.. How many villagers we need in wood?

  • If we are in Feudal Age with all the upgrades we know that with one villager in wood can maintein 5 (5.121) farms. In this case (15 farms) can be maintained with 3 villagers (15 / 5.121 = 2.93, but we need to round up)

Note that these tables do not contemplate civilizations with economic bonuses but I can add it later if you want.

Rant: muted taunts in HD break the game

It is so weird not hearing the taunt sound. Even if the play taunt sound is checked in the option, your own taunts in game and everything in the waiting room are still muted.

I don't understand the decision to disable it by default. There is already a hot key on my keyboard/speaker (mute sound/power) so I have never been bothered by taunt spamming. This is a big deal because HD is the gateway for new players and they will be confused by the numbers their teammates send. I am begging for a hot fix to give me a normal aoe2 experience.

There are civs that have scorpions but not heavy scorpions.

But there are no civs that have camels but not Heavy Camels.

I guess same applies to battle ele and eagle.

Map variety in MP

I swear, is Black Forest or Arabia all anyone ever plays nowadays?

It seems on the majority of streams and twitch feeds and even pro tournaments, it's just Arabia or Black Forest again and again and again.

Come on people, do some Mongolia or Ice Lake...or even something fun like Scandinavia or Coastal.

I'm just so tired of Black Forest already.

What do you think about the ingame music in DE?

Hey everyone,

I'm enjoying the beta since sunday and I really like the game (always loved AoE anyway haha) but the music is a bit of an ambivalent thing to me.

It's nice that they added an orchestral soundtrack to it, I remember that the original AoE always was a bit of a silent game to me, so the music definitely enhances the experience. To me it sounds a bit odd though, basically for two reasons:

-It sounds kinda hectic or overpaced for the game. I mean Age of Empires, compared to e.g. Starcraft, was always a rather slow game, but the music makes it sound like there is constant action going on.

-It sounds a bit "too orchestral", like a soundtrack to a movie. I find it hard to put this into words but I'll try. The music defintely has a bit of an ancient element to it, but overall it sounds like a modern orchestra making "modern-classic" music, at some points I even feel like it could be computer made (it has this certain midi touch to it). I think it gets more clear when I compared it to the music in Age of Mythology. The music in AoM was a bit more slow paced and had lot's of ancient influences, when you played the Greek the music sounded very mediterranean, lot's of exotic instruments etc. I think AoE lacks a bit of that.

Don't get me wrong, I still have a lot of fun with the game but I think the AoM soundtrack would fit the game better than the new one. Just my personal opinion.

At what point do walls become a liability?

Confession: i'm hooked on walls. Right now I'm obsessively playing Arena against the Hard AI until I can beat it most times. The AI never seems to have its walls up post imp, whereas I'm usually still defending walls with a castle behind and then sallying out. I'm starting to get the feeling that it's a structural reason why I'm not stepping up in skill. Any insights or tips?

Does alt-tab close the game intentionally?

Hi all, just got the beta yesterday. Played a game which I was completely winning, two guys with nothing left remaining which didn't yet surrender. So I alt-tabbed to search if there's spies in aoe1 which closed the game. Guess I lost? Anyways, the whole graphics settings/resolution options window was a bit lacking, did I miss something?

New beta keys/players discussion thread

Here are my thougths:

  • Horrible lag, everywhere from the menu, the lobbies, the game, everything.
  • The game looks and feels like a graphically enhanced version of AOE
  • New graphics are well made, perhaps they have a little less personality than that most games have these days, but it's all right.

Why did anyone think that a 20 year old game only needed a graphical update? This game was great 20 years ago but only because it was competing with similarly clunky, slow, odd-paced slightly disorganized games.

RPG's that rely on story and cool characters and interesting gameplay or shooters which rely on fast paced action aged well or better but strategy games from 20 years ago were terrible and unremarkable compared to the generation that followed. They were played because there was nothing else, not because they were good. It was until AOE2 that the game became good enough to be a timeless masterpiece.

I know this was said before, i know i'm not the only one, I know it would have been silly to upgrade AOE1 to be like AOE2 or something like that but i still feel like something could have been done to enhance the experience. Anything.

And the lag... oh god? WHY IS THE MENU LAGGY?!??! THE MENU!!.

I will try this again when a few updates have rolled out just to give it the benefit of the doubt but in the meantime i'm waiting for aoe4.

Wasted opportunity here.

Does AOM: EE have a chance?

So, in December I bought the game because I really missed this game and it was also at a cheap price at that time. However, I was quite disappointed when I saw the low amount of players...It was very hard to get a decent 3v3 and when I jumped into ranked, the only games I had were 1v1s...now I am asking, is there a way to bring back this game? Or will Voobly remain the main place where you can play it?

Halberdiers too strong vs cav archers

I was playing as huns earlier and the enemy was making halbs and I was screwed huns can't counter halbs, their cavalry get decimated, their infantry sucks, skirms and cav archers lose 1v1 vs halbs. Like cav archers get killed in 3 hits. Like seriously, a unit that cost 70 gold dies 1v1 to a TRASH unit ? How is that not broken? Cav archers cost a lot to upgrade and you can kill them with a trash unit? I would never go cav archers vs a civ with halbs in late game and a lot of civs have halbs. This makes the cav archer a situational unit

Would anyone mind helping me balance out my custom Khmer civ?

So, I'm in the process of editing the Khmer into an archer civilization, but I don't want them to be too OP.

With that said, I'm going to put the Longbowman and Rattan archers as my unique units and getting rid of the Elephant Ballista.

I'm downgrading the Cavalier to a Knight, Siege Ram to a Battering Ram, and getting rid of War Elephants, Hand Cannoners, Crossbowmen and both unique technologies and copying Yeomen over to them.

What else can I do to make them more balanced?

How and when to use battle elephants effectively?

I'm a noob who's been fiddling with battle elephants, and I'm not sure what role they fill best. On paper they seem great with the high HP and trample damage, but it feels like they have the same weaknesses as knights without the speed to dodge onager shots and catch up to archers. Obviously you can't just build battle elephants by themselves and expect to win, but what army compositions can make them the best choice among all your options?

Louder Notification sound for opponent reaching next age?

This is sort of specific but I couldn't find anything with google search, maybe I was use the wrong words or it doesn't exist... but is there a mod that changes the notification when your opponent reaches the next age? I always seem to miss that notification which can be a real problem in 1v1s. It would be nice if I could make it something louder than just the normal chat notification sound.

Daut's recent performance *discussion*

3 months ago TyRanT_Daut became the first player to reach 2k6 on the new ladder- and still holds the record for highest elo achieved on that ladder, I know elo dosnt mean much but it is an impressive accomplishment, and he was clearly a top player doing well in tournaments- such as the escape gaming tournaments in which he consistently got to later stages of the tournament . Since then he seems to of slacked a bit, going out in the quarters of KOTD, and loosing the the LB QF of MOA5 to Hera. Even viper said in the same stream he announced Tatoh had joined Tyrant he said: "we could justify kicking DauT with his recent performance". It has been weird seeing DauT do s poorly and practice so little, why is this?

What exactly changed with organ guns?

I saw the patch update, but the spread dmg is confusing, as secondary bullets seems to do 1 dmg still(i tested).

Also, did they always do more than 20 dmg on their primary bullet? I never really used them in the editor before, can someone confirm that they could, say, 2 hit kill arbalests pre-patch, meaning roughly 26 dmg on primary bullet? Maybe it always was like that, so this could be nothing.

Also, watched a stream with viper+tatooh the other day, they seem to think it was noticably stronger than before, when playing DM.¨

Not exactly sure whats going on with this unit, then again, its not a unit i have had much interest in after the min range was introduced, so i cant really remember.

PSA: do not accept "training" from Kutataxoa/SongSong/HeartShaker

Just wanted to share this story.

In late December I was randomly messaged over voobly by the Vietnamese 2k2 player [sT]Heartshaker, who also goes by SongSong or Kutataxoa. Very good player.

He offered to help me improve by giving me continual feedback on games and showing what I was doing wrong, in return for a payment. He rejected my proposals for game-by-game compensation and instead insisted on $100 for a straight month of a large amount of training.

Okay, now right here you might be thinking "Why would you ever agree to that, that's way overcharging....you're an idiot." I know that. I was thinking something similar at the time while we were discussing it. But the truth is, I was okay with losing $100-- I can afford that, I'm doing okay financially. To me, it was worth the potential loss of $100 for the chance that it would be worth it and he would really help me learn to play better. If he really did help me a lot, I would consider $100 a fair price.

Unfortunately, here's what resulted: he spent 15 minutes helping me practice a certain build order, gave me some feedback on about 2 or 3 games over a few days, then vanished. He's barely been online in the past month. When I messaged him to ask about a game, I got no response for 4 or 5 days, and when I messaged him again he said "Sry bro, I busy some day, I go work" [sic]. Seven days later, I messaged him again to ask if I was going to hear from him at all this month, and he said "am back now" but never answered about the game I had asked about, nor have I heard from him since then, more than two weeks ago.

I could keep messaging him, but frankly I paid him up front and I shouldn't have to chase him for help. It's clear I'm not going to get much. There's 5 days left in our month-long agreement, but I already consider him to have defaulted on this.

I just wanted to warn other players to avoid having anyone else lose money for no reason.

Favorite Unit? Please provide justification

Mine is the Huskarl. I love using infantry, but they are countered so well by archer units. Goths having Huskarl is so perfect for allowing me to field the infantry and seige army that I love to use. It's hard to justify them as the best unit, but they facilitate my preferred playstyle so well.

Reverse campaign scenarios

What I'm talking about are scenarios where you play as the enemy.

I think there are some scenarios where this could feasibly work - the problem is, in most campaign scenarios, you begin with next-to-nothing. Some of these could work as singleplayer, some as multiplayer.

Do you think the AOE community has more "White Knights" (guys sucking up to women) relative to other game?

Not trying to start a flame war or anything but time and time again on various Aoe2 twitch streamers channels people get shut down by the masses for criticizing female players skill or general behavior when the criticism is perfectly valid.

They have no issue with actual negative comments towards guys but simply saying something like "She's not that good" has gotten a few people banned. I recall on one of Viper's stream someone actually got timed out for 6000 seconds and then warned they would be banned in the future for saying "She's not that good", I believe the guy was referring to Smarthy when everyone else was kissing her ass.

And this is similar for others like Naomi, etc, the truth is they are not that good at Aoe2 but for some reason the Aoe2 community just gasses their egos like they've never seen a girl before. Anyone with valid criticism gets banned or shut down.

[Voobly-UP 1.5] How to enable [Unit Created/Researched/Built] Messages and Whats the deal with max selected units?

Tried voobly hearing the praise all around. The network is definitely way better than steam but some questions.

In steam version it shows messages like villager created, house built, loom researched etc.... along with sound. How to enable that in Voobly?

Also i created tons of skirmisher but when i double click select it, only a finite number of them is selected. I know this limitation is also in HD, but it seems like the Number of unit is lower in voobly :/ Any way to increase this?

Make Mongols great again!

Mangudai used to be OP in AoC 1.0c, with the attack delay nerf they woud've been fine... except, in the expansions they've gotten striped from their identity.

Even after the nerf, Camel Archers are cheaper, have more pierce armor, more attack in castle age and completely rek them in a fight. That's fine as they're intented to do that, but they also get Genitours, stronger Camels and stronger/equal Hussars. Berbers are as close to a hard counter as we've ever seen in this game.

Not to mention the addition of Imperial Squirmishers, Imperial Camels, a bunch of Elephants with high pierce armor. Hell, even the turks' Cavalry Archers with their 100 hp and +4/+6 armor are looking better at this point.

Mongols used to be a one trick civ but very strong at what they did. Now they are an ok one trick civ with a bunch of hard counters running around. The worst part is they simply lack the versatility to get around those counters. Besides mangudai and siege, all their units are outclassed, no plate barding armor, no ring archer armor, no paladin, no halbs, no late game economy, even their hussars are mostly outclassed by FU regular hussars. They really need a more useful castle UT, Nomads is completely useless in 99% of games, it isn't only bad but also feels bad, being a super watered down version of the huns bonus that you need to pay for.

All the Mongols weaknesses were fine and necessary in AoC 1.0c, but in a world full of strong anti-cavalry archers units they really need something else to fall back on.

Is there something called Magyar Deathball?

Yesterday I was playing an Arena game with Magyars. I was blessed with five relics and I got my all three golds uncontested. The extra gold was inside my opponents base, but I prefer 5 relics.

I then boomed hard to 160 villagers (out of 300), defended with two castles and destroyed its siege with huzsars. Visited market before my opponent, finished FU paladin and HCA. Prepared some hussars to save some gold as well.

It feels like there is really nothing that could counter it, but I've actually never heard of anyone naming this as "deathball". Shall we expect Magyars more in competitive team games? Maybe replacing Huns or Persians?

Advice on FFA Indians v. Vikings

I lost hard last night as Indians to the Vikings. I tried to mass hand canoners and hussars, assuming camels would be useless due to pikes. Those bloody beserkers murdered me. Most of the other players were irrelevant. Skirms did great against me as well and some arbelasts.

How to rectify in future? Did i just need more numbers? I felt like i was matching them, rather than surpassing as I should and pressing harder.

Making Britons competitive?

What could be done to make the Britons more viable? I was thinking increasing either longbow accuracy or rate of fire/decrease frame delay. Other possibilities: Give the brits FU Hussars, or a late game eco bonus. I think any of these would make the brits far stronger. Having a FU trash line would make them more viable in solo games with limited gold, and give them better counters to siege. Boosting the longbows would make them act as an even greater force multiplier. And a late game eco bonus would allow them to keep their boom going through out the game.
