New Player - Looking for Tips

Hi!

I have recently started playing AOE 2 HD again and was hoping some kind people could assist me with some 'Need to know' mechanics/tips.

Is there any advice you could give me that you wish you knew when you started to play? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am looking to get to a somewhat competitive level so that i can put up a fight against other players.
