The possibility of such a mod has been going on in my head for a while now. While it's true that the African Kingdoms and Rise of Rajas expansions added a lot of new civs, I feel that many of them are similar to one another and don't offer much variety. My proposal is to make a mod for the original AOC expansion, refining the existing civs so that every civ now has two unique units, and adding a couple of new civs (the new civs too would have two unique units).
Here are my thoughts:
Aztecs
Existing Unique Unit: Jaguar Warrior
New Unit: Coyote Runner (taking from aoe3), trained at the barracks, fast infantry that has a bonus attack against villagers and buildings, excellent raiding unit.
Britons
Existing Unique Unit: Longbowman
New Unit: Heavy Axeman (it is said that the Anglo-Saxons deployed them during the battle of Hastings in 1066), trained at the barracks, slow-moving heavy infantry wielding a double-handed battle axe, deals bonus damage against both cavalry and infantry, and can chop down trees to make a pathway.
Byzantines
Existing: Cataphract
New: Ballista, trained at the siege workshop, kind of like a cross between a scorpion and a mangonel, lauches an arrow-like projectile like the scorpion, but the projectile travels in an arch like the mangonel. Deals bonus damage against buildings, walls, and siege units.
Celts
Existing: Woad Raider
New: Hobelar, trained at the stable, light cavalry that deals bonus damage against archers and skirms.
Chinese (North Chinese)
Existing: Chu Ko Nu
New: Iron Flail (again inspired by aoe3), trained at the stable, heavy cavalry that deals bonus damage against buildings and infantry, kind of like a stronger and more versatile version of the tarkan.
Franks
Existing: Throwing Axeman
New: Elite Paladin, this one is a unique upgrade of the paladin. Elite paladins are stronger than paladins and they use a lance, but they are also very expensive to upgrade and to train.
Goths
Existing: Huskarl
New: Legionnaire, the Goths were heavily influenced by the Romans and this is a unit that reflects this influence. It wields a round shield and a pike, is trained at the barracks, and deals bonus damage against cavalry and skirms.
Huns
Existing: Tarkan
New: Lasso Cavalry, trained at the stable, somewhat similar to the Chinese meteor hammers in aoe3. It has a range of 2 and deals bonus damage against infantry.
Iroquois (new civ, no cavalry)
Iroquois Warrior: trained at the barracks, different outfit, but otherwise identical to the Eagle Warrior.
Tomahawks: similar to throwing axeman but much faster, and can throw two axes at the same time. Deals bonus damage against infantry and villagers. Trained at their castle (or rather, war hut).
Mantlet: trained at the siege workshop, has a very high pierce armor, throws torches at buildings, and deals bonus damage against them.
Japanese
Existing: Samurai
New: Ashigaru, trained at the archery range, hand-cannoneers that deal bonus damage against cavalry.
Khmer (new civ)
Ballista Elephant: trained at their castle, similar to the one in Rise of Rajas, though cannot shoot through trees.
Jungle Skirmisher: trained at the archery range, has the same range and attack as a normal skirmisher, though their speed is similar to the Eagle Warrior, and also has a higher HP and LOS than a normal skirm.
Koreans
Already have two unique units.
Mayans
Existing: Plumed Archers
New: Female Warrior Priest. Some of the most well-renowned warrior priests in Mayan society were actually female. They are trained at the monastery, can heal friendly units, and deals bonus damage against infantry and monks. Unlike normal monks however, they cannot pick up relics.
Mongols
Existing: Mangudai
New: Grenadier. The grenade was originally a Chinese invention, however it was the Mongols that used it to great effect in their conquests. It's trained at the siege workshop and deals bonus damage against walls, towers, and buildings.
