Into China: Am I supposed to be defeated the moment the wonder is built? Or is that a bug?

Can't find the answer to this anywhere. I just got a "defeated" screen seemingly out of nowhere. At first I thought maybe there was a bug where if your originally captured ram dies, you lose, but then I noticed there was a "Wonder: 0 years" in the top right corner. Haven't played the game in years but if my memory is correct, I should have the #00 years to defeat the wonder right?

Is this is a bug? Or am I missing something? And if so, any suggestions to fix it? I literally just bought and downloaded from steam.
