How close to offline is AOE 2 online latency on voobly/HD?

Heyo! Recently started playing AOE2, I thought I would just enjoy it for a few hours due to nostalgia, but like Age of Mythology I now realize I might invest more time than intended...

And I was wondering about online latency, I joined a game on HD just to see what the latency was like. Since in Age of Mythology it was truly unplayable (1 - 2 second delay). And found myself dissapointed when the delay was really similar in AOE2HD. And as far as I could tell everyone in the lobby had below 100 ping.

So I'm wondering if Voobly improves on the latency, or if it's inherient to the game due to it's age.

PS. I'm terrible at the game, so it's not like I need the low latency for insane micro, but it just doesn't feel fun playing when it seems like the game is just slagging behind so much.
