Is AOE2HD broken?

I just picked this game up after not playing it for decade(s).

Did a match against a friend.

When I did attack move, my units would literally run in between the enemy units to get past them to get to the point I marked rather than attack them.

The archers would get point blank before they would fire their arrows and die from it.

Even though we both had all our upgrades, his units would mulch through mine easily.

For example, I had 30 units vs his 8. I lost all 30, he lost 2.

When I told my units to retreat they would just try to move into a wall instead of going through the opening that was a few feet away. As a result, they just got left behind and died.

Often my units will simply not attack (even with attack stance) and they would spend much of their time just running into each other. Blocking each other's paths until he just mulched them again.

Just how broken is this game?
